| ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ |
| moolahu bhulae gur sabadh n pashhaanehi || |
| They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ |
| moh biaapae kishh soojhai naahee gur sabadhee har paavaniaa ||6|| |
| They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6|| |

| ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| vaedh pukaarai thribidhh maaeiaa || |
| The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ |
| manamukh n boojhehi dhoojai bhaaeiaa || |
| The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand. |
 |
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ |
| thrai gun parrehi har eaek n jaanehi bin boojhae dhukh paavaniaa ||7|| |
| They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7|| |

| ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| jaa this bhaavai thaa aap milaaeae || |
| When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself. |

| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ |
| gur sabadhee sehasaa dhookh chukaaeae || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥ |
| naanak naavai kee sachee vaddiaaee naamo mann sukh paavaniaa ||8||30||31|| |
| O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31|| |

| The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well. |

| ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| thath pashhaanai so panddith hoee || |
| Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars. |

| ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ |
| aap tharai sagalae kul thaarai har naam mann vasaavaniaa ||1|| |
| They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord's Name in the mind. ||1|| |

| ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ |
| ho vaaree jeeo vaaree har ras chakh saadh paavaniaa || |
| I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste. |

| ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| har ras chaakhehi sae jan niramal niramal naam dhhiaavaniaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸੋ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ |
| so nihakaramee jo sabadh beechaarae || |
| Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥ |
| anthar thath giaan houmai maarae || |
| They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being. |
 |
| ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| naam padhaarathh no nidhh paaeae thrai gun maett samaavaniaa ||2|| |
| They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2|| |
 |
| ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ |
| houmai karai nihakaramee n hovai || |
| Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma. |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee houmai khovai || |
| It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego. |
 |
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ |
| anthar bibaek sadhaa aap veechaarae gur sabadhee gun gaavaniaa ||3|| |
| Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they sing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||3|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| har sar saagar niramal soee || santh chugehi nith guramukh hoee || |
| The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean. The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean. |

| ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ |
| eisanaan karehi sadhaa dhin raathee houmai mail chukaavaniaa ||4|| |
| They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4|| |

| ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ |
| ahinis preeth sabadh saachai har sar vaasaa paavaniaa ||5|| |
| Day and night, they are in love with the True Word of the Shabad. They obtain their home in the Ocean of the Lord. ||5|| |

| ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਬਗੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਈ ॥ |
| manamukh sadhaa bag mailaa houmai mal laaee || |
| The self-willed manmukhs shall always be filthy cranes, smeared with the filth of ego. |
 |
| ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਪਰੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
| eisanaan karai par mail n jaaee || |
| They may bathe, but their filth is not removed. |
 |
| ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ |
| jeevath marai gur sabadh beechaarai houmai mail chukaavaniaa ||6|| |
| One who dies while yet alive, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad, is rid of this filth of ego. ||6|| |

| ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| rathan padhaarathh ghar thae paaeiaa || |
| The Priceless Jewel is found, in the home of one's own being, |

| ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
| poorai sathigur sabadh sunaaeiaa || |
| when one listens to the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect True Guru. |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ |
| gur parasaadh mittiaa andhhiaaraa ghatt chaanan aap pashhaananiaa ||7|| |
| By Guru's Grace, the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled; I have come to recognize the Divine Light within my own heart. ||7|| |

| ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੈ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ॥ |
| aap oupaaeae thai aapae vaekhai || |
| The Lord Himself creates, and He Himself beholds. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ॥ |
| sathigur saevai so jan laekhai || |
| Serving the True Guru, one becomes acceptable. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੧॥੩੨॥ |
| naanak naam vasai ghatt anthar gur kirapaa thae paavaniaa ||8||31||32|| |
| O Nanak, the Naam dwells deep within the heart; by Guru's Grace, it is obtained. ||8||31||32|| |

| Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya. |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ |
| gur parasaadhee ko viralaa boojhai chouthhai padh liv laavaniaa ||1|| |
| By Guru's Grace, a few come to understand; they center their consciousness in the fourth state. ||1|| |

| ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ |
| ho vaaree jeeo vaaree maaeiaa mohu sabadh jalaavaniaa || |
| I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who burn away their emotional attachment to Maya, through the Shabad. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu jalaaeae so har sio chith laaeae har dhar mehalee sobhaa paavaniaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Those who burn away this attachment to Maya, and focus their consciousness on the Lord are honored in the True Court, and the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhaevee dhaevaa mool hai maaeiaa || |
| The source, the root, of the gods and goddesses is Maya. |
 |
| ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sinmrith saasath jinn oupaaeiaa || |
| For them, the Simritees and the Shaastras were composed. |

| ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| kaam krodhh pasariaa sansaarae aae jaae dhukh paavaniaa ||2|| |
| Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. ||2|| |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| this vich giaan rathan eik paaeiaa || |
| The jewel of spiritual wisdom was placed within the universe. |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee mann vasaaeiaa || |
| By Guru's Grace, it is enshrined within the mind. |
 |
| ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ |
| jath sath sanjam sach kamaavai gur poorai naam dhhiaavaniaa ||3|| |
| Celibacy, chastity, self-discipline and the practice of truthfulness are obtained from the Perfect Guru, by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3|| |

| ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥ |
| paeeearrai dhhan bharam bhulaanee || |
| In this world of her parents' home, the soul-bride has been deluded by doubt. |
 |
| ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ॥ |
| dhoojai laagee fir pashhothaanee || |
| Attached to duality, she later comes to regret it. |
 |
| ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਵਾਏ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ |
| halath palath dhovai gavaaeae supanai sukh n paavaniaa ||4|| |
| She forfeits both this world and the next, and even in her dreams, she does not find peace. ||4|| |

| ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ |
| paeeearrai dhhan kanth samaalae || |
| The soul-bride who remembers her Husband Lord in this world, |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee vaekhai naalae || |
| by Guru's Grace, sees Him close at hand. |
 |
| ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ |
| pir kai sehaj rehai rang raathee sabadh singaar banaavaniaa ||5|| |
| She remains intuitively attuned to the Love of her Beloved; she makes the Word of His Shabad her decoration. ||5|| |
