| ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| sach sanjam karanee har keerath har saethee liv laaee ||2|| |
| True self-discipline rests in singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||2|| |

| ਆਪੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਆਪੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥ |
| aapae sabadh sach saakhee aapae jinh jothee joth milaaee || |
| He Himself is the Shabad, and He Himself is the True Teachings; He merges our light into the Light. |

| ਦੇਹੀ ਕਾਚੀ ਪਉਣੁ ਵਜਾਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| dhaehee kaachee poun vajaaeae guramukh anmrith paaee ||3|| |
| The breath vibrates through this frail body; the Gurmukh obtains the ambrosial nectar. ||3|| |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ |
| aapae saajae sabh kaarai laaeae so sach rehiaa samaaee || |
| He Himself fashions, and He Himself links us to our tasks; the True Lord is pervading everywhere. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੪॥੮॥ |
| naanak naam binaa koee kishh naahee naamae dhaee vaddaaee ||4||8|| |
| O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one is anything. Through the Naam,we are blessed with glory. ||4||8|| |

| houmai bikh man mohiaa ladhiaa ajagar bhaaree || |
| The mortal is enticed by the poison of corruption, burdened with such a heavy load. |

| ਗਰੁੜੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
| garurr sabadh mukh paaeiaa houmai bikh har maaree ||1|| |
| The Lord has placed the magic spell of the Shabad into his mouth, and destroyed the poison of ego. ||1|| |

| ਮਨ ਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| man rae houmai mohu dhukh bhaaree || |
| O mortal, egotism and attachment are such heavy loads of pain. |

| ਇਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤਰਣਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| eihu bhavajal jagath n jaaee tharanaa guramukh thar har thaaree ||1|| rehaao || |
| This terrifying world-ocean cannot be crossed; through the Lord's Name, the Gurmukh crosses over to the other side. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਸਭ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| thrai gun maaeiaa mohu pasaaraa sabh varathai aakaaree || |
| Attachment to the three-phased show of Maya pervades all the created forms. |

| ਤੁਰੀਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ |

| In the Sat Sangat, the Society of the Saints, the state of supreme awareness is attained. The Merciful Lord carries us across. ||2|| |

| The lifestyle of the Lord's humble servant is exalted and sublime. He spreads the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises throughout the world. ||3|| |

| O my Lord and Master, please be merciful, merciful to me, that I may enshrine the Lord, Har, Har, Har, within my heart. |

| Is this mind a householder, or is this mind a detached renunciate? |

| ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਵਰਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਵਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ |
| k eihu man avaran sadhaa avinaasee || |
| Is this mind beyond social class, eternal and unchanging? |

| ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ |

| Is this mind fickle, or is this mind detached? |

| ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ |

| How has this mind been gripped by possessiveness? ||1|| |

| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ |

| O Pandit, O religious scholar, reflect on this in your mind. |

| ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| avar k bahuthaa parrehi outhaavehi bhaar ||1|| rehaao || |
| Why do you read so many other things, and carry such a heavy load? ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਾਈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mamathaa karathai laaee || |
| The Creator has attached it to Maya and possessiveness. |
|
| ਏਹੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥ |
| eaehu hukam kar srisatt oupaaee || |
| Enforcing His Order, He created the world. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee boojhahu bhaaee || |
| By Guru's Grace, understand this, O Siblings of Destiny. |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| sadhaa rehahu har kee saranaaee ||2|| |
| Remain forever in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||2|| |
|
| ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋ ਤਿਹਾਂ ਗੁਣਾ ਕੀ ਪੰਡ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥ |
| so panddith jo thihaan gunaa kee pandd outhaarai || |
| He alone is a Pandit, who sheds the load of the three qualities. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ |
| anadhin eaeko naam vakhaanai || |
| Night and day, he chants the Name of the One Lord. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਓਹੁ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇਇ ॥ |
| sathigur kee ouhu dheekhiaa laee || |
| He accepts the Teachings of the True Guru. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਸੀਸੁ ਧਰੇਇ ॥ |
| sathigur aagai sees dhharaee || |
| He offers his head to the True Guru. |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਅਲਗੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥ |
| sadhaa alag rehai nirabaan || |
| He remains forever unattached in the state of Nirvaanaa. |
|
| ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੩॥ |
| so panddith dharageh paravaan ||3|| |
| Such a Pandit is accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਭਨਾਂ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ |
| sabhanaan mehi eaeko eaek vakhaanai || |
| He preaches that the One Lord is within all beings. |
|
| ਜਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| jaan eaeko vaekhai thaan eaeko jaanai || |
| As he sees the One Lord, he knows the One Lord. |
|
| ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| jaa ko bakhasae maelae soe || |
| That person, whom the Lord forgives, is united with Him. |
|
| ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥ |
| aithhai outhhai sadhaa sukh hoe ||4|| |
| He finds eternal peace, here and hereafter. ||4|| |
|
| ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| kehath naanak kavan bidhh karae kiaa koe || |
| Says Nanak, what can anyone do? |
|
| ਸੋਈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| soee mukath jaa ko kirapaa hoe || |
| He alone is liberated, whom the Lord blesses with His Grace. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| anadhin har gun gaavai soe || |
| Night and day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. |
|
| ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੂਕ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧॥੧੦॥ |
| saasathr baedh kee fir kook n hoe ||5||1||10|| |
| Then, he no longer bothers with the proclamations of the Shaastras or the Vedas. ||5||1||10|| |

| The self-willed manmukhs wander lost in reincarnation, confused and deluded by doubt. |

| ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ |
| jamakaal maarae nith path gavaaee || |
| The Messenger of Death constantly beats them and disgraces them. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਚੁਕਾਈ ॥ |
| sathigur saevaa jam kee kaan chukaaee || |
| Serving the True Guru, the mortal's subservience to Death is ended. |

| ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| har prabh miliaa mehal ghar paaee ||1|| |
| He meets the Lord God, and enters the Mansion of His Presence. ||1|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ |

| O mortal, as Gurmukh, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਖੋਇਆ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| janam padhaarathh dhubidhhaa khoeiaa kouddee badhalai jaae ||1|| rehaao || |
| In duality, you are ruining and wasting this priceless human life. You trade it away in exchange for a shell. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |

| The Gurmukh falls in love with the Lord, by His Grace. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੁ ॥ |

| He enshrines loving devotion to the Lord, Har, Har, deep within his heart. |
