| ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਭੋਂਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ |
| kehiou n boojhai andhh n soojhai bhonaddee kaar kamaaee || |
| He does not understand what he is told; he is blind - he does not see, and so he does his evil deeds. |

| ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਕਰਮੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| aapae preeth praem paramaesur karamee milai vaddaaee ||2|| |
| The Transcendent Lord Himself showers His Love and Affection; by His Grace, He bestows glorious greatness. ||2|| |

| ਦਿਨੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਘਟਾਈ ॥ |
| dhin dhin aavai thil thil shheejai maaeiaa mohu ghattaaee || |
| With the coming of each and every day, his life is wearing away, bit by bit; but still, his heart is attached to Maya. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੋ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਬ ਲਗ ਦੂਜੀ ਰਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| bin gur booddo thour n paavai jab lag dhoojee raaee ||3|| |
| Without the Guru, he is drowned, and finds no place of rest, as long as he is caught in duality. ||3|| |

| ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੀਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ |
| ahinis jeeaa dhaekh samhaalai sukh dhukh purab kamaaee || |
| Day and night, God watches over and takes care of His living beings; they receive pleasure and pain according to their past actions. |

| ਕਰਮਹੀਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥ |
| karameheen sach bheekhiaa maangai naanak milai vaddaaee ||4||11|| |
| Nanak, the unfortunate one, begs for the charity of Truth; please bless him with this glory. ||4||11|| |

| If I remain silent, the world calls me a fool. |

| ਅਧਿਕ ਬਕਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੀਆ ॥ |
| adhhik bako thaeree liv reheeaa || |
| If I talk too much, I miss out on Your Love. |
|
| ਭੂਲ ਚੂਕ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥ |
| bhool chook thaerai dharabaar || |
| My mistakes and faults will be judged in Your Court. |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੧॥ |
| naam binaa kaisae aachaar ||1|| |
| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can I maintain good conduct? ||1|| |

| ਐਸੇ ਝੂਠਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| aisae jhooth muthae sansaaraa || |
| Such is the falsehood which is plundering the world. |
|
| ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਨਿੰਦੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| nindhak nindhai mujhai piaaraa ||1|| rehaao || |
| The slanderer slanders me, but even so, I love him. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਨਿੰਦਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| jis nindhehi soee bidhh jaanai || |
| He alone knows the way, who has been slandered. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadhae dhar neesaanai || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is stamped with the Lord's Insignia in His Court. |
|
| ਕਾਰਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| kaaran naam antharagath jaanai || |
| He realizes the Naam, the Cause of causes, deep within himself. |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥ |
| jis no nadhar karae soee bidhh jaanai ||2|| |
| He alone knows the way, who is blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||2|| |

| ਮੈ ਮੈਲੌ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| mai maila oojal sach soe || |
| I am filthy and polluted; the True Lord is Immaculate and Sublime. |
|
| ਊਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| ootham aakh n oochaa hoe || |
| Calling oneself sublime, one does not become exalted. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਖੂਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| manamukh khoolih mehaa bikh khaae || |
| The self-willed manmukh openly eats the great poison. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| guramukh hoe s raachai naae ||3|| |
| But one who becomes Gurmukh is absorbed in the Name. ||3|| |
|
| ਹੀਣੌ ਨੀਚੁ ਬੁਰੌ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| heena neech bura buriaar || |
| the lowest of the low, the worst of the worst. |
|
| ਨੀਧਨ ਕੌ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| needhhan ka dhhan naam piaar || |
| I am poor, but I have the Wealth of Your Name, O my Beloved. |

| ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੪॥ |
| eihu dhhan saar hor bikhiaa shhaar ||4|| |
| This is the most excellent wealth; all else is poison and ashes. ||4|| |

| ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ |
| ousathath nindhaa sabadh veechaar || |
| I pay no attention to slander and praise; I contemplate the Word of the Shabad. |

| ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ |
| jo dhaevai this ko jaikaar || |
| I celebrate the One who blesses me with His Bounty. |
|
| ਤੂ ਬਖਸਹਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| thoo bakhasehi jaath path hoe || |
| Whomever You forgive, O Lord, is blessed with status and honor. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੨॥ |

| Eating too much one's filth only increases; wearing fancy clothes one's home is disgraced. |

| ਬਕਿ ਬਕਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਣਿ ॥੧॥ |
| bak bak vaadh chalaaeiaa bin naavai bikh jaan ||1|| |
| Talking too much, one only starts arguments. Without the Name, everything is poison - know this well. ||1|| |

| ਬਾਬਾ ਐਸਾ ਬਿਖਮ ਜਾਲਿ ਮਨੁ ਵਾਸਿਆ ॥ |
| baabaa aisaa bikham jaal man vaasiaa || |
| O Baba, such is the treacherous trap which has caught my mind; |

| ਬਿਬਲੁ ਝਾਗਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bibal jhaag sehaj paragaasiaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| riding out the waves of the storm, it will be enlightened by intuitive wisdom. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ |
| bikh khaanaa bikh bolanaa bikh kee kaar kamaae || |
| They eat poison, speak poison and do poisonous deeds. |
|
| ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| jam dhar baadhhae maareeahi shhoottas saachai naae ||2|| |
| Bound and gagged at Death's door, they are punished; they can be saved only through the True Name. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਿਵ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਵ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਕੀਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| jiv aaeiaa thiv jaaeisee keeaa likh lai jaae || |
| As they come, they go. Their actions are recorded, and go along with them. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| manamukh mool gavaaeiaa dharageh milai sajaae ||3|| |
| The self-willed manmukh loses his capital, and is punished in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| |
|
| ਜਗੁ ਖੋਟੌ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੌ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀਂ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| jag khotta sach niramala gur sabadheen veechaar || |
| The world is false and polluted; only the True One is Pure. Contemplate Him through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਤੇ ਨਰ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੪॥ |
| thae nar viralae jaaneeahi jin anthar giaan muraar ||4|| |
| Those who have God's spiritual wisdom within, are known to be very rare. ||4|| |
|
| ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੈ ਨੀਝਰੁ ਝਰੈ ਅਮਰ ਅਨੰਦ ਸਰੂਪ ॥ |
| ajar jarai neejhar jharai amar anandh saroop || |
| They endure the unendurable, and the Nectar of the Lord, the Embodiment of Bliss, trickles into them continuously. |

| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਲ ਕੌ ਮੀਨੁ ਸੈ ਥੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥੧੩॥ |
| naanak jal ka meen sai thhae bhaavai raakhahu preeth ||5||13|| |
| O Nanak, the fish is in love with the water; if it pleases You, Lord, please enshrine such love within me. ||5||13|| |

| joy, love and the power to command; |

| ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| painhan khaanaa cheeth n paaee || |
| fine clothes and food - these have no place in one's consciousness. |

| ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ |

| True intuitive peace and poise rest in the Naam. ||1|| |
