| Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world. |

| ਕਾਮਣਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥ |
| kaaman dhaekh kaam lobhaaeiaa || |
| Seeing a beautiful woman, the man is overcome with sexual desire. |
|
| ਸੁਤ ਕੰਚਨ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ |
| suth kanchan sio haeth vadhhaaeiaa || |
| His love for his children and gold steadily increases. |
|
| ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| sabh kishh apanaa eik raam paraaeiaa ||1|| |
| He sees everything as his own, but he does not own the One Lord. ||1|| |

| ਐਸਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥ |

| I meditate as I chant on such a mala, |

| ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| that I rise above pleasure and pain; I attain the most wondrous devotional worship of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| O Treasure of Virtue, Your limits cannot be found. |

| ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ |

| Through the True Word of the Shabad, I am absorbed into You. |

| ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ |

| You Yourself created the comings and goings of reincarnation. |

| ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |

| They alone are devotees, who focus their consciousness on You. ||2|| |

| Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the Lord, the Lord of Nirvaanaa |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ |

| - without meeting the True Guru, no one knows this. |

| ਸਗਲ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ |
| sagal sarovar joth samaanee || |
| The Lord's Light fills the sacred pools of all beings. |

| ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥ |

| I am a sacrifice to the Embodiment of Bliss. ||3|| |

| ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥ |

| Through the Guru's Teachings, one achieves loving devotional worship. |

| ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ |
| dhhaavath raakhai thaak rehaaeae || |
| The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place. |
|
| ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥ |
| sachaa naam mann vasaaeae ||4|| |
| The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4|| |
|
| ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥ |
| bisam binodh rehae paramaadhee || |
| The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end, |
|
| ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ |
| guramath maaniaa eaek liv laagee || |
| for those who accept the Guru's Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord. |
|
| ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥ |
| dhaekh nivaariaa jal mehi aagee || |
| Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished. |
|
| ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥ |
| so boojhai hovai vaddabhaagee ||5|| |
| They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur saevae bharam chukaaeae || |
| Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ |
| anadhin jaagai sach liv laaeae || |
| Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day. |
|
| ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| eaeko jaanai avar n koe || |
| They know the One Lord, and no other. |
|
| ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥ |
| sukhadhaathaa saevae niramal hoe ||6|| |
| Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6|| |
|
| ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| saevaa surath sabadh veechaar || |
| Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad. |
|
| ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ |
| jap thap sanjam houmai maar || |
| Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego. |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ |
| jeevan mukath jaa sabadh sunaaeae || |
| One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while yet alive, by listening to the Shabad. |
|
| ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| sachee rehath sachaa sukh paaeae ||7|| |
| Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7|| |
|
| ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ |
| sukhadhaathaa dhukh maettanehaaraa || |
| The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain. |
|
| ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥ |
| avar n soojhas beejee kaaraa || |
| I cannot conceive of serving any other. |
|
| ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ |
| than man dhhan har aagai raakhiaa || |
| I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥ |
| naanak kehai mehaa ras chaakhiaa ||8||2|| |
| Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2|| |

| nivalee karam bhuangam bhaathee raechak poorak kunbh karai || |
| You may perform exercises of inner purification, and fire up the furnace of the Kundalini, inhaling and exhaling and holding the breath. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ॥ |
| bin sathigur kishh sojhee naahee bharamae bhoolaa boodd marai || |
| Without the True Guru, you will not understand; deluded by doubt, you shall drown and die. |

| ਅੰਧਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਹੈ ॥ |
| andhhaa bhariaa bhar bhar dhhovai anthar kee mal kadhae n lehai || |
| The spiritually blind are filled with filth and pollution; they may wash, but the filth within shall never depart. |

| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਜੀਗਰੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੈ ॥੧॥ |
| naam binaa fokatt sabh karamaa jio baajeegar bharam bhulai ||1|| |
| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all their actions are useless, like the magician who deceives through illuions. ||1|| |
|
| ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| khatt karam naam niranjan soee || |
| The merits of the six religious rituals are obtained through the Immaculate Naam. |

| ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| thoo gun saagar avagun mohee ||1|| rehaao || |
| You, O Lord, are the Ocean of virtue; I am so unworthy. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| maaeiaa dhhandhhaa dhhaavanee dhuramath kaar bikaar || |
| Running around chasing the entanglements of Maya is an evil-minded act of corruption. |
|
| ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ਬੂਝਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਾਰ ॥ |
| moorakh aap ganaaeidhaa boojh n sakai kaar || |
| The fool makes a show of his self-conceit; he does not know how to behave. |
|
| ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲ ਖੁਆਰ ॥ |
| manasaa maaeiaa mohanee manamukh bol khuaar || |
| The self-willed manmukh is enticed by his desires for Maya; his words are useless and empty. |
|
| ਮਜਨੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਚਾਰ ਸੀਂਗਾਰ ॥੨॥ |
| majan jhoothaa chanddaal kaa fokatt chaar seenagaar ||2|| |
| The ritual cleansings of the sinner are fradulent; his rituals and decorations are useless and empty. ||2|| |
|
| ਝੂਠੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਬਿਬਾਦੁ ॥ |
| jhoothee man kee math hai karanee baadh bibaadh || |
| False is the wisdom of the mind; its actions inspire useless disputes. |
|
| ਝੂਠੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ॥ |
| jhoothae vich ahankaran hai khasam n paavai saadh || |
| The false are filled with egotism; they do not obtain the sublime taste of their Lord and Master. |
