| ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਆਵਧਹ ॥ |
| mrigee paekhanth badhhik prehaaraen lakhy aavadhheh || |
| Seeing the deer, the hunter aims his weapons. |

| ਅਹੋ ਜਸ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੬॥ |
| aho jasy rakhaen gopaaleh naanak rom n shhaedhyathae ||6|| |
| But if one is protected by the Lord of the World, O Nanak, not a hair on his head will be touched. ||6|| |
|
| ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥ |
| bahu jathan karathaa balavanth kaaree saevanth sooraa chathur dhiseh || |
| He may be surrounded on all four sides by servants and powerful warriors; |
|
| ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥ |
| bikham thhaan basanth oocheh neh simaranth maranan kadhaancheh || |
| he may dwell in a lofty place, difficult to approach, and never even think of death. |
|
| ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥ |
| hovanth aagiaa bhagavaan purakheh naanak keettee saas akarakhathae ||7|| |
| But when the Order comes from the Primal Lord God, O Nanak, even an ant can take away his breath of life. ||7|| |
|
| ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥ |
| sabadhan rathan hithan maeiaa keerathan kalee karam kirathuaa || |
| To be imbued and attuned to the Word of the Shabad; to be kind and compassionate; to sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises - these are the most worthwhile actions in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. |

| ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥ |
| mittanth thathraagath bharam mohan || |
| In this way, one's inner doubts and emotional attachments are dispelled. |

| ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰ ॥ |
| bhagavaan ramanan sarabathr thhaaniyan || |
| God is pervading and permeating all places. |
|
| ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ |
| dhrisatt thuyan amogh dharasanan basanth saadhh rasanaa || |
| So obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He dwells upon the tongues of the Holy. |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥ |
| har har har harae naanak prian jaap japanaa ||8|| |
| O Nanak, meditate and chant the Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||8|| |

| ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥ |
| ghattanth roopan ghattanth dheepan ghattanth rav saseear nakhyathr gaganan || |
| Beauty fades away, islands fade away, the sun, moon, stars and sky fade away. |

| ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥ |
| ghattanth basudhhaa gir thar sikhanddan || |
| The earth, mountains, forests and lands fade away. |
|
| ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥ |
| ghattanth lalanaa suth bhraath heethan || |
| One's spouse, children, siblings and loved friends fade away. |
|
| ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ |
| ghattanth kanik maanik maaeiaa svaroopan || |
| Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. |
|
| ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ |
| neh ghattanth kaeval gopaal achuth || |
| Only the Eternal, Unchanging Lord does not fade away. |
|
| ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥ |
| asathhiran naanak saadhh jan ||9|| |
| O Nanak, only the humble Saints are steady and stable forever. ||9|| |
|
| ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥ |

| Do not delay in practicing righteousness; delay in committing sins. |

| ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥ |

| Implant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within yourself, and abandon greed. |

| ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਣ ॥ |
| saran santhan kilabikh naasan praapathan dhharam lakhiyan || |
| In the Sanctuary of the Saints, the sins are erased. The character of righteousness is received by that person, |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥ |
| naanak jih suprasann maadhhaveh ||10|| |
| O Nanak, with whom the Lord is pleased and satisfied. ||10|| |

| ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥ |
| mirath mohan alap budhhyan rachanth banithaa binodh saahan || |
| The person of shallow understanding is dying in emotional attachment; he is engrossed in pursuits of pleasure with his wife. |

| ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥ |
| jaaban behikram kanik kunddaleh || |
| With youthful beauty and golden earrings, |
|
| ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ |
| bachithr mandhir sobhanth basathraa eithyanth maaeiaa byaapithan || |
| wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. |
|
| ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥ |
| hae achuth saran santh naanak bho bhagavaaneae nameh ||11|| |
| O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God, O Sanctuary of the Saints, Nanak humbly bows to You. ||11|| |
|
| ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥ |
| janaman th maranan harakhan th sogan bhogan th rogan || |
| If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease. |
|
| ਰਾਜੰ ਤ ਮਾਨੰ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੰ ਤ ਹੀਨੰ ॥ |
| raajan th maanan abhimaanan th heenan || |
| If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਰਗੰ ਵਰਤੰਤਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੰ ॥ |
| pravirath maaragan varathanth binaasanan || |
| Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined. |
|
| ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨਾਸਨੰ ॥੧੨॥ |
| gobindh bhajan saadhh sangaen asathhiran naanak bhagavanth bhajanaasanan ||12|| |
| Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12|| |

| ਕਿਰਪੰਤ ਹਰੀਅੰ ਮਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ |

| By the Grace of God, genuine understanding comes to the mind. |

| ਬਿਗਸੀਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਿ ਬੁਧਾ ਕੁਸਲ ਥਾਨੰ ॥ |
| bigaseedhhiy budhhaa kusal thhaanan || |
| The intellect blossoms forth, and one finds a place in the realm of celestial bliss. |

| ਬਸ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰਤ ਰਿਖਿਅੰ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਨੰ ॥ |
| basiyanth rikhian thiaag maanan || |
| The senses are brought under control, and pride is abandoned. |
|
| ਸੀਤਲੰਤ ਰਿਦਯੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਸੰਤ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ |
| seethalanth ridhayan dhrirr santh giaanan || |
| The heart is cooled and soothed, and the wisdom of the Saints is implanted within. |

| ਰਹੰਤ ਜਨਮੰ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ |
| rehanth janaman har dharas leenaa || |
| Reincarnation is ended, and the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan is obtained. |
|
| ਬਾਜੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਣਾਂ ॥੧੩॥ |
| baajanth naanak sabadh beenaan ||13|| |
| O Nanak, the musical instrument of the Word of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within. ||13|| |

| ਕਹੰਤ ਬੇਦਾ ਗੁਣੰਤ ਗੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਣੰਤ ਬਾਲਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ |
| kehanth baedhaa gunanth guneeaa sunanth baalaa bahu bidhh prakaaraa || |
| The Vedas preach and recount God's Glories; people hear them by various ways and means. |
|
| ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਸੁਬਿਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ |
| dhrirranth subidhiaa har har kirapaalaa || |
| The Merciful Lord, Har, Har, implants spiritual wisdom within. |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੪॥ |
| naam dhaan jaachanth naanak dhainehaar gur gopaalaa ||14|| |
| Nanak begs for the Gift of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Guru is the Great Giver, the Lord of the World. ||14|| |

| ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਹ ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਲੋਕ ਕਹ ॥ |
| neh chinthaa maath pith bhraatheh neh chinthaa kashh lok keh || |
| Do not worry so much about your mother, father and siblings. Do not worry so much about other people. |

| ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ ॥ |
| neh chinthaa banithaa suth meetheh pravirath maaeiaa sanabandhhaneh || |
| Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya. |

| ਦਇਆਲ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕਹ ॥੧੫॥ |
| dhaeiaal eaek bhagavaan purakheh naanak sarab jeea prathipaalakeh ||15|| |
| The One Lord God is Kind and Compassionate, O Nanak. He is the Cherisher and Nurturer of all living beings. ||15|| |

| ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਵਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਆਸਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥ |
| anithy vithan anithy chithan anithy aasaa bahu bidhh prakaaran || |
| Wealth is temporary; conscious existence is temporary; hopes of all sorts are temporary. |

| ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਹੇਤੰ ਅਹੰ ਬੰਧੰ ਭਰਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲਨੰ ਬਿਕਾਰੰ ॥ |
| anithy haethan ahan bandhhan bharam maaeiaa malanan bikaaran || |
| The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary. |
|
| ਫਿਰੰਤ ਜੋਨਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਠਰਾਗਨਿ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਲੀਣ ਬੁਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ॥ |
| firanth jon anaek jatharaagan neh simaranth maleen budhhyan || |
| The mortal passes through the fire of the womb of reincarnation countless times. He does not remember the Lord in meditation; his understanding is polluted. |

| ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਰਤ ਮਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੬॥ |
| hae gobindh karath maeiaa naanak pathith oudhhaaran saadhh sangameh ||16|| |
| O Lord of the Universe, when You grant Your Grace, even sinners are saved. Nanak dwells in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||16|| |

| ਗਿਰੰਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਤਾਲੰ ਜਲੰਤ ਦੇਦੀਪ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ ॥ |
| giranth gir pathith paathaalan jalanth dhaedheepy baisvaanthareh || |
| You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire, |

| ਬਹੰਤਿ ਅਗਾਹ ਤੋਯੰ ਤਰੰਗੰ ਦੁਖੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣਹ ॥ |
| behanth agaah thoyan tharangan dhukhanth greh chinthaa janaman th maraneh || |
| or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth. |

| ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਧਨੰ ਨ ਸਿਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਸਬਦ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੧੭॥ |
| anik saadhhanan n sidhhyathae naanak asathhanbhan asathhanbhan asathhanbhan sabadh saadhh svajaneh ||17|| |
| No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man's only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17|| |

| ਘੋਰ ਦੁਖ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਅਨਿਕ ਹਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਦੰ ॥ |
| ghor dhukhyan anik hathyan janam dhaaridhran mehaa bikhyaadhan || |
| Excruciating pain, countless killings, reincarnation, poverty and terrible misery |

| ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਕ ਕਾਸਟ ਭਸਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੮॥ |
| mittanth sagal simaranth har naam naanak jaisae paavak kaasatt bhasaman karoth ||18|| |
| are all destroyed by meditating in remembrance on the Lord's Name, O Nanak, just as fire reduces piles of wood to ashes. ||18|| |

| ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰ ਗੁਣ ਰਮੰਤ ਅਘ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ |
| andhhakaar simarath prakaasan gun ramanth agh khanddaneh || |
| Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the darkness is illuminated. Dwelling on His Glorious Praises, the ugly sins are destroyed. |
