| then step onto My Path with your head in hand. |

| ਇਤੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੈਰੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥ |

| When you place your feet on this Path, |
 |
| ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੨੦॥ |
| sir dheejai kaan n keejai ||20|| |
| give Me your head, and do not pay any attention to public opinion. ||20|| |

| ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਰਾੜਾ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| naal kiraarraa dhosathee koorrai koorree paae || |
| False is friendship with the false and greedy. False is its foundation. |

| ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਮੂਲਿਆ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਥਾਇ ॥੨੧॥ |
| maran n jaapai mooliaa aavai kithai thhaae ||21|| |
| O Moollah, no one knows where death shall strike. ||21|| |

| ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣੰ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ |
| giaan heenan agiaan poojaa || |
| Without spiritual wisdom, the people worship ignorance. |
 |
| ਅੰਧ ਵਰਤਾਵਾ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨੨॥ |
| andhh varathaavaa bhaao dhoojaa ||22|| |
| They grope in the darkness, in the love of duality. ||22|| |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ |
| gur bin giaan dhharam bin dhhiaan || |
| Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom; without Dharma, there is no meditation. |

| ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੂਲੋ ਨ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨੩॥ |
| sach bin saakhee moolo n baakee ||23|| |
| Without Truth, there is no credit; without capital, there is no balance. ||23|| |

| ਮਾਣੂ ਘਲੈ ਉਠੀ ਚਲੈ ॥ |
| maanoo ghalai outhee chalai || |
| The mortals are sent into the world; then, they arise and depart. |
 |
| ਸਾਦੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਵੇਹੀ ਗਲੈ ॥੨੪॥ |
| saadh naahee eivaehee galai ||24|| |
| There is no joy in this. ||24|| |

| ਰਾਮੁ ਝੁਰੈ ਦਲ ਮੇਲਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਲੁ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| raam jhurai dhal maelavai anthar bal adhhikaar || |
| Raam Chand, sad at heart, assembled his army and forces. |

| ਬੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜੁਝੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ |
| banthar kee sainaa saeveeai man than jujh apaar || |
| The army of monkeys was at his service; his mind and body became eager for war. |

| ਸੀਤਾ ਲੈ ਗਇਆ ਦਹਸਿਰੋ ਲਛਮਣੁ ਮੂਓ ਸਰਾਪਿ ॥ |
| seethaa lai gaeiaa dhehasiro lashhaman mooou saraap || |
| Raawan captured his wife Sita, and Lachhman was cursed to die. |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥੨੫॥ |
| naanak karathaa karanehaar kar vaekhai thhaap outhhaap ||25|| |
| O Nanak, the Creator Lord is the Doer of all; He watches over all, and destroys what He has created. ||25|| |

| ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਝੂਰੈ ਰਾਮਚੰਦੁ ਸੀਤਾ ਲਛਮਣ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ |
| man mehi jhoorai raamachandh seethaa lashhaman jog || |
| In his mind, Raam Chand mourned for Sita and Lachhman. |

| ਹਣਵੰਤਰੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ |
| hanavanthar aaraadhhiaa aaeiaa kar sanjog || |
| Then, he remembered Hanuman the monkey-god, who came to him. |

| ਭੂਲਾ ਦੈਤੁ ਨ ਸਮਝਈ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਏ ਕਾਮ ॥ |
| bhoolaa dhaith n samajhee thin prabh keeeae kaam || |
| The misguided demon did not understand that God is the Doer of deeds. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸੋ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਰਾਮ ॥੨੬॥ |
| naanak vaeparavaahu so kirath n mittee raam ||26|| |
| O Nanak, the actions of the Self-existent Lord cannot be erased. ||26|| |

| ਲਾਹੌਰ ਸਹਰੁ ਜਹਰੁ ਕਹਰੁ ਸਵਾ ਪਹਰੁ ॥੨੭॥ |
| laahaar sehar jehar kehar savaa pehar ||27|| |
| The city of Lahore suffered terrible destruction for four hours. ||27|| |

| The city of Lahore is a pool of ambrosial nectar, the home of praise. ||28|| |

| What are the signs of a prosperous person? His stores of food never run out. |

| ਉਦੋਸੀਅ ਘਰੇ ਹੀ ਵੁਠੀ ਕੁੜਿੲਂੀ ਰੰਨੀ ਧੰਮੀ ॥ |
| oudhoseea gharae hee vuthee kurrieanaee rannee dhhanmee || |
| Prosperity dwells in his home, with the sounds of girls and women. |

| ਸਤੀ ਰੰਨੀ ਘਰੇ ਸਿਆਪਾ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਕੂੜੀ ਕੰਮੀ ॥ |
| sathee rannee gharae siaapaa rovan koorree kanmee || |
| All the women of his home shout and cry over useless things. |

| ਜੋ ਲੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਟੇ ਦੰਮ ਸਹੰਮੀ ॥੨੯॥ |
| jo laevai so dhaevai naahee khattae dhanm sehanmee ||29|| |
| Whatever he takes, he does not give back. Seeking to earn more and more, he is troubled and uneasy. ||29|| |

| ਪਬਰ ਤੂੰ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਕਵਲਾ ਕੰਚਨ ਵੰਨਿ ॥ |
| pabar thoon hareeaavalaa kavalaa kanchan vann || |
| O lotus, your leaves were green, and your blossoms were gold. |

| ਕੈ ਦੋਖੜੈ ਸੜਿਓਹਿ ਕਾਲੀ ਹੋਈਆ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥ |
| kai dhokharrai sarriouhi kaalee hoeeaa dhaehuree naanak mai than bhang || |
| What pain has burnt you, and made your body black? O Nanak, my body is battered. |

| ਜਾਣਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾ ਲਹਾਂ ਜੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥ |
| jaanaa paanee naa lehaan jai saethee maeraa sang || |
| I have not received that water which I love. |

| ਜਿਤੁ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਨੁ ਪਰਫੁੜੈ ਚੜੈ ਚਵਗਣਿ ਵੰਨੁ ॥੩੦॥ |
| jith ddithai than parafurrai charrai chavagan vann ||30|| |
| Seeing it, my body blossomed forth, and I was blessed with a deep and beautiful color. ||30|| |

| ਰਜਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਪਹੁਚਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| raj n koee jeeviaa pahuch n chaliaa koe || |
| No one lives long enough to accomplish all he wishes. |
 |
| ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੀਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| giaanee jeevai sadhaa sadhaa surathee hee path hoe || |
| Only the spiritually wise live forever; they are honored for their intuitive awareness. |
 |
| ਸਰਫੈ ਸਰਫੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਏਵੈ ਗਈ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ |
| sarafai sarafai sadhaa sadhaa eaevai gee vihaae || |
| Bit by bit, life passes away, even though the mortal tries to hold it back. |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਹੀ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩੧॥ |
| naanak kis no aakheeai vin pushhiaa hee lai jaae ||31|| |
| O Nanak, unto whom should we complain? Death takes one's life away without anyone's consent. ||31|| |

| ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਅਹੁ ਰਾਇ ਨੋ ਮਤਿ ਚਲੈ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਢਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ |
| dhos n dhaeahu raae no math chalai jaan budtaa hovai || |
| Do not blame the Sovereign Lord; when someone grows old, his intellect leaves him. |

| ਗਲਾਂ ਕਰੇ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ਤਾਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਪਵਣਾ ਖਾਤੀ ਟੋਵੈ ॥੩੨॥ |
| galaan karae ghanaereeaa thaan annhae pavanaa khaathee ttovai ||32|| |
| The blind man talks and babbles, and then falls into the ditch. ||32|| |
 |
| ਪੂਰੇ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| poorae kaa keeaa sabh kishh pooraa ghatt vadhh kishh naahee || |
| All that the Perfect Lord does is perfect; there is not too little, or too much. |

| ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਰਮੁ ॥ |
| abhiaagath eaeh n aakheeahi jin kai man mehi bharam || |
| Do not call the wandering beggars holy men, if their minds are filled with doubt. |

| ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦਿਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਧਰਮੁ ॥੧॥ |
| thin kae dhithae naanakaa thaeho jaehaa dhharam ||1|| |
| Whoever gives to them, O Nanak, earns the same sort of merit. ||1|| |

| ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| abhai niranjan param padh thaa kaa bheekhak hoe || |
| One who begs for the supreme status of the Fearless and Immaculate Lord |

| ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| this kaa bhojan naanakaa viralaa paaeae koe ||2|| |
| - how rare are those who have the opportunity, O Nanak, to give food to such a person. ||2|| |
 |
| ਹੋਵਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਵੇਦ ਪੜਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| hovaa panddith jothakee vaedh parraa mukh chaar || |
| If I were a religious scholar, an astrologer, or one who could recite the four Vedas, |

| ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਆ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਜ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥ |
| navaa khanddaa vich jaaneeaa apanae chaj veechaar ||3|| |
| I could be famous throughout the nine regions of the earth, for my wisdom and thoughtful contemplation. ||3|| |

| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਕੈਲੀ ਘਾਤੁ ਕੰਞਕਾ ਅਣਚਾਰੀ ਕਾ ਧਾਨੁ ॥ |
| brehaman kailee ghaath kannjakaa anachaaree kaa dhhaan || |
| If a Brahmin kills a cow or a female infant, and accepts the offerings of an evil person, |

| ਫਿਟਕ ਫਿਟਕਾ ਕੋੜੁ ਬਦੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ |
| fittak fittakaa korr badheeaa sadhaa sadhaa abhimaan || |
| he is cursed with the leprosy of curses and criticism; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride. |
 |
| ਪਾਹਿ ਏਤੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਵੀਸਰਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ |
| paahi eaethae jaahi veesar naanakaa eik naam || |
| One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak, is covered by countless sins. |

| ਸਭ ਬੁਧੀ ਜਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਰਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥ |
| sabh budhhee jaaleeahi eik rehai thath giaan ||4|| |
| Let all wisdom be burnt away, except for the essence of spiritual wisdom. ||4|| |
