| jeevan mukath so aakheeai jis vichahu houmai jaae ||6|| |
| He alone is called Jivan-Mikta, liberated while yet alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ |
| gur bachanee man vaechiaa sabadh man dhheeraa || |
| I have sold my mind for the Word of the Guru's Shabad; my mind is comforted and consoled by the Shabad. |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ |
| naam padhaarathh amar hai hiradhai mann vasaaeae || |
| The treasure of the Naam brings immortality; enshrine it in your heart and mind. |

| ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ |
| bharam bhulaanaa sabadh n cheenai jooai baajee haaree ||2|| |
| He is deluded by doubt, and does not remember the Word of the Shabad. He loses his life in the gamble. ||2|| |
|
| ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥ |
| chaar padhaarathh lai jag janamiaa siv sakathee ghar vaas dhharae || |
| One is born to achieve the four great objectives of life. The spirit has taken up its home in the material world. |

| ਪਿਰੁ ਮੁਤੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤਿਨ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪॥ |
| pir muthee ddohaaganee thin ddukhee rain vihaae ||4|| |
| The Lord rejects the impure soul-brides. Their life-night passes in misery. ||4|| |
|
| ਨਾਉ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ॥੫॥ |
| naao visaarehi baedh samaalehi bikh bhoolae laekhaaree ||5|| |
| Forgetting the Name, he dwells upon the Vedas; he writes, but he is confused by his poisonous corruption. ||5|| |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧੦॥੧॥ |
| jis thoo dhaevehi soee paaeae naanak thath beechaaree jeeo ||10||1|| |
| He alone receives it, unto whom You bestow it; this is the essence of reality which Nanak has realized. ||10||1|| |

| kahu naanak gur chalath dhikhaaeiaa man madhhae har har raavanaa ||8||2||5|| |
| Says Nanak, the Guru has revealed this miracle; within my mind, I enjoy the Lord, Har, Har. ||8||2||5|| |

| ਅਜਰਾਈਲਿ ਫੜੇ ਫੜਿ ਕੁਠੇ ॥ |

| Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, seizes and tortures them. |

| ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥ |
| aapae parakhae pooraa tholo || |
| You Yourself are the Assessor, the Perfect Weigher. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
| bin naavai mai avar n dheesai naavahu gath mith paaee hae ||8|| |
| I cannot see anything except the Name. Through the Name comes salvation and merit. ||8|| |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jin siriaa thin dhhandhhai laaeiaa || |
| The One who made it, assigns the tasks to it. |
|
| ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਅਧੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| dhaeiaa dhuaapur adhhee hoee || |
| In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, compassion was cut in half. |
|
| ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ |
| cheenai aap pashhaanai soee jothee joth milaaee hae ||7|| |
| One who understands his own self, realizes the Lord. His light merges into the Light. ||7|| |
|
| ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ |
| saakath koorr pachehi man houmai dhuhu maarag pachai pachaaee hae ||6|| |
| The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind.On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6|| |
|
| ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ |
| saas saas sach naam samaalae anthar oudhar majhaaraa hae ||5|| |
| With each and every breath, he contemplated the True Name, deep within himself, within the womb. ||5|| |
|
| ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ |
| dharageh mukath karae kar kirapaa bakhasae avagun keenaa hae ||4|| |
| By His Grace, He grants liberation in His Court; He forgives them for their sins. ||4|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ |
| guramukh saadhhoo saran thumaaree || |
| The Holy Gurmukh seeks Your Sanctuary. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥ |
| har dhhan naam amolak dhaevai har jas dharageh piaaraa hae ||16|| |
| They are given the priceless wealth of the Lord's Name; singing His Praises, they are His beloveds in His court. ||16|| |
|
| ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ |
| kis ko dhos dhaehi thoo praanee sahu apanaa keeaa karaaraa hae ||14|| |
| So who can you blame, O mortal being? The hardships you suffer are from your own actions. ||14|| |
|
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਇਉ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਮਿਲਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ |
| raam naam dhaevai kar kirapaa eio salalai salal milaathaa hae ||12|| |
| He grants His Grace, and bestows the Lord's Name. He merges with Him, like water with water. ||12|| |
|
| ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ |
| poonjee saabath raas salaamath chookaa jam kaa faahaa hae ||10|| |
| His stock is safe, and his capital is safe and sound. The noose of Death is cut away from around his neck. ||10|| |
|
| ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ |
| anehadh run jhunakaar sadhaa dhhun nirabho kai ghar vaaeidhaa ||9|| |
| The sweet, melodious, unstruck sound current vibrates continuously in the home of the fearless Lord. ||9|| |
|
| ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ |
| roop n raekhiaa mith nehee keemath sabadh bhaedh patheeaaeidhaa ||9|| |
| He has no form or shape, no limit or value. Pierced by the Shabad, one is satisfied. ||9|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਲ ਓਪਤਿ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ |
| naa thadh giaan dhhiaan kul oupath naa ko ganath ganaaeidhaa ||9|| |
| There was no spiritual wisdom or meditation, no ancestry or creation, no reckoning of accounts. ||9|| |
|
| ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| pooraa sathigur milai milaaeae || |
| Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord. |
|
| ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ |
| sukh dhukh hee thae amar atheethaa guramukh nij ghar paaeidhaa ||8|| |
| The Gurmukh is immortal, untouched by pleasure and pain. He obtains the home of his own inner being. ||8|| |
|
| ਤੂ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜੀਅ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ |
| thoo antharajaamee jeea sabh thaerae || |
| You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. All beings belong to You. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ |
| naanak khoj lehahu ghar apanaa har aatham raam naam paaeiaa ||5|| |
| O Nanak, search and examine your own home, and you shall find the Supreme Soul, and the Name of the Lord. ||5|| |

| ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ |
| mool manthra har naam rasaaein kahu naanak pooraa paaeiaa ||5|| |
| Chanting the Mool Mantra, and the Name of the Lord, the source of nectar, says Nanak, I have found the Perfect Lord. ||5|| |

| ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ |
| adhrisatt agochar naam apaaraa || |
| The lofty and exalted state, the highest of the high is obtained, practicing the immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||4|| |

| ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਚਲਣਵਾਰਾ ॥ |
| anth sakhaaee chalanavaaraa || |
| In the end, when I must depart, it shall be my only help and support. |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| aapae nadhar karae so paaeae aapae mael milaaee hae ||2|| |
| He alone attains the Lord, unto whom He grants His Grace. He Himself unites in His Union. ||2|| |
|
| ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ |
| lakh chouraaseeh jeea oupaaeae || |
| He created the 8.4 millions species of beings. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ |
| gur saevaa thae sabadh pashhaathaa || |
| Serving the Guru, through the Word of the Shabad, He is realized. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਮਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ |
| bin sathigur saevae mukath n hoee man dhaekhahu liv laaee hae ||15|| |
| Without serving the True Guru, no one finds liberation. O mind, tune into this, and see. ||15|| |
|
| ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ |
| sae vaddabhaagee jinee eaeko jaathaa || |
| Those who know the One Lord are very fortunate. |
|
| ਅਨਲ ਵਾਉ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥ |
| anal vaao bharam bhulaaee || |
| Fire and wind lead him into delusions of doubt. |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਧਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥ |
| thrai gun badhhak mukath niraaree || |
| They are bound by the three qualities - the three gunas; they are far away from liberation. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਖੁਆਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ |
| sathigur raakhae sae jan oubarae hor maaeiaa moh khuaaree hae ||12|| |
| Those humble beings, whom the True Guru protects, are saved. The rest are ruined through emotional attachment to Maya. ||12|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ |
| guramukh sabadh vasai man saachaa sadh saevae sukhadhaathaa hae ||11|| |
| The True Shabad dwells deep within the mind of the Gurmukh; he serves the Giver of peace forever. ||11|| |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ |
| aapae maelai gur sabadh veechaaraa || |
| God unites with Himself, through contemplation of the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
|
| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂ ਅਪਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ |
| jin ko nadhar karehi thoo apanee guramukh alakh lakhaahaa hae ||10|| |
| Those who are blessed by Your Glance of Grace, become Gurmukh, and comprehend the incomprehensible. ||10|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥ |
| guramukh jaathaa karam bidhhaathaa || |
| The Gurmukh knows that the Lord is the Architect of karma. |
|
| ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| manehath karam fir jonee paaeae || |
| They stubborn-mindedly perform these rituals, and are consigned to reincarnation. |

| ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| aap pashhaanai so sabh gun jaanai || |
| One who realizes himself, knows all virtues. |
|
| ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| panch sabadh mil vaajaa vaaeiaa || |
| The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, vibrate and resonate. |
