| ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ |
| bhai than agan bhakhai bhai naal || |
| The fire of fear within the body is burnt away by the Fear of God. |

| ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ |
| bhai bho gharreeai sabadh savaar || |
| Through this Fear of God, we are adorned with the Word of the Shabad. |
|
| ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥ |
| bhai bin ghaarrath kach nikach || |
| Without the Fear of God, all that is fashioned is false. |
|
| ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥ |
| andhhaa sachaa andhhee satt ||2|| |
| Useless is the mold, and useless are the hammer-strokes on the mold. ||2|| |
|
| ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥ |
| budhhee baajee oupajai chaao || |
| The desire for the worldly drama arises in the intellect, |
|
| ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥ |
| sehas siaanap pavai n thaao || |
| but even with thousands of clever mental tricks, the heat of the Fear of God does not come into play. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥ |
| naanak manamukh bolan vaao || |
| O Nanak, the speech of the self-willed manmukh is just wind. |
|
| ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥ |

| His words are worthless and empty, like the wind. ||3||1|| |

| ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| ddar ghar ghar ddar ddar ddar jaae || |
| Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away. |

| ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| so ddar kaehaa jith ddar ddar paae || |
| What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears? |
|
| ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| thudhh bin dhoojee naahee jaae || |
| Without You, I have other place of rest at all. |
|
| ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| jo kishh varathai sabh thaeree rajaae ||1|| |
| Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1|| |
|
| ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥ |
| ddareeai jae ddar hovai hor || |
| Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God. |
|
| ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| ddar ddar ddaranaa man kaa sor ||1|| rehaao || |
| Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥ |
| naa jeeo marai n ddoobai tharai || |
| The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across. |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| jin kishh keeaa so kishh karai || |
| The One who created everything does everything. |
|
| ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| hukamae aavai hukamae jaae || |
| By the Hukam of His Command we come, and by the Hukam of His Command we go. |
|
| ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| aagai paashhai hukam samaae ||2|| |
| Before and after, His Command is pervading. ||2|| |

| ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥ |
| hans haeth aasaa asamaan || |
| Cruelty, attachment, desire and egotism |
|
| ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥ |
| this vich bhookh bahuth nai saan || |
| there is great hunger in these, like the raging torrent of a wild stream. |
|
| ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ |
| bho khaanaa peenaa aadhhaar || |
| Let the Fear of God be your food, drink and support. |
|
| ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥ |
| vin khaadhhae mar hohi gavaar ||3|| |
| Without doing this, the fools simply die. ||3|| |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| jis kaa koe koee koe koe || |
| If anyone really has anyone else - how rare is that person! |
|
| ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| sabh ko thaeraa thoon sabhanaa kaa soe || |
| All are Yours - You are the Lord of all. |
|
| ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥ |
| jaa kae jeea janth dhhan maal || |
| All beings and creatures, wealth and property belong to Him. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥ |

| O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him. ||4||2|| |

| Let Truth be your brother - these are your best relatives. ||1|| |

| ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| He has been described, but He cannot be described at all. |

| ਸਰਮ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਸਸੁਰ ਭਏ ॥ |
| saram surath dhue sasur bheae || |
| Modesty, humility and intuitive understanding are my mother-in-law and father-in-law; |
|
| ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਲਏ ॥੨॥ |
| karanee kaaman kar man leae ||2|| |
| I have made good deeds my spouse. ||2|| |
|
| ਸਾਹਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥ |
| saahaa sanjog veeaahu vijog || |
| Union with the Holy is my wedding date, and separation from the world is my marriage. |
|
| ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥੩॥ |

| The union of air, water and fire |

| ਚੰਚਲ ਚਪਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ॥ |
| chanchal chapal budhh kaa khael || |
| the body is the play-thing of the fickle and unsteady intellect. |
|
| ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ |
| no dharavaajae dhasavaa dhuaar || |
| It has nine doors, and then there is the Tenth Gate. |
|
| ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ |
| bujh rae giaanee eaehu beechaar ||1|| |
| Reflect upon this and understand it, O wise one. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਥਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਨਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| kathhathaa bakathaa sunathaa soee || |
| The Lord is the One who speaks, teaches and listens. |
|
| ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| One who contemplates his own self is truly wise. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਪਉਣੁ ॥ |
| dhaehee maattee bolai poun || |
| The body is dust; the wind speaks through it. |

| ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਆ ਹੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥ |
| bujh rae giaanee mooaa hai koun || |
| Understand, O wise one, who has died. |
|
| ਮੂਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥ |
| mooee surath baadh ahankaar || |
| Awareness, conflict and ego have died, |
|
| ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| ouhu n mooaa jo dhaekhanehaar ||2|| |
| but the One who sees does not die. ||2|| |
|
| ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ ॥ |
| jai kaaran thatt theerathh jaahee || |
| For the sake of it, you journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers; |
|
| ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ |
| rathan padhaarathh ghatt hee maahee || |
| but this priceless jewel is within your own heart. |
|
| ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ |
| parr parr panddith baadh vakhaanai || |
| The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read endlessly; they stir up arguments and controversies, |
|
| ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥ |
| bheethar hodhee vasath n jaanai ||3|| |
| but they do not know the secret deep within. ||3|| |
