| kaethae rukh birakh ham cheenae kaethae pasoo oupaaeae || |
| I took the form of so many plants and trees, and so many animals. |

| ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਗ ਕੁਲੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਖ ਉਡਾਏ ॥੨॥ |
| kaethae naag kulee mehi aaeae kaethae pankh ouddaaeae ||2|| |
| Many times I entered the families of snakes and flying birds. ||2|| |

| ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਭੰਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| hatt pattan bij mandhar bhannai kar choree ghar aavai || |
| I broke into the shops of the city and well-guarded palaces; stealing from them, I snuck home again. |

| ਅਗਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥ |
| agahu dhaekhai pishhahu dhaekhai thujh thae kehaa shhapaavai ||3|| |
| I looked in front of me, and I looked behind me, but where could I hide from You? ||3|| |

| ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥ |
| thatt theerathh ham nav khandd dhaekhae hatt pattan baajaaraa || |
| I saw the banks of sacred rivers, the nine continents, the shops and bazaars of the cities. |

| ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥ |
| lai kai thakarree tholan laagaa ghatt hee mehi vanajaaraa ||4|| |
| Taking the scale, the merchant begins to weigh his actions within his own heart. ||4|| |

| ਜੇਤਾ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਤੇਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ |
| jaethaa samundh saagar neer bhariaa thaethae aougan hamaarae || |
| As the seas and the oceans are overflowing with water, so vast are my own sins. |

| ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਹਰ ਉਪਾਵਹੁ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਪਥਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥ |
| dhaeiaa karahu kishh mihar oupaavahu ddubadhae pathhar thaarae ||5|| |
| Please, shower me with Your Mercy, and take pity upon me. I am a sinking stone - please carry me across! ||5|| |

| ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਤਪੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਗੈ ਕਾਤੀ ॥ |
| jeearraa agan baraabar thapai bheethar vagai kaathee || |
| My soul is burning like fire, and the knife is cutting deep. |

| ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੬॥੫॥੧੭॥ |
| pranavath naanak hukam pashhaanai sukh hovai dhin raathee ||6||5||17|| |
| Prays Nanak, recognizing the Lord's Command, I am at peace, day and night. ||6||5||17|| |

| The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating. |

| ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| heerae jaisaa janam hai kouddee badhalae jaae ||1|| |
| Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥ |
| naam n jaaniaa raam kaa || |
| You do not know the Name of the Lord. |

| ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| moorrae fir paashhai pashhuthaahi rae ||1|| rehaao || |
| You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause|| |

| ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| anathaa dhhan dhharanee dhharae anath n chaahiaa jaae || |
| You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary? |

| ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| anath ko chaahan jo geae sae aaeae anath gavaae ||2|| |
| Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2|| |

| ਕਰਮਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
| karamaa oupar nibarrai jae lochai sabh koe ||3|| |
| According to the karma of past actions, one's destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |

| O Nanak, the One who created the creation - He alone takes care of it. |

| The Hukam of our Lord and Master's Command cannot be known; He Himself blesses us with greatness. ||4||1||18|| |

| What if I were to become a deer, and live in the forest, picking and eating fruits and roots |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਰਿ ਹਉ ਜਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ |
| gur parasaadhee maeraa sahu milai vaar vaar ho jaao jeeo ||1|| |
| - by Guru's Grace, I am a sacrifice to my Master. Again and again, I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice. ||1|| |

| I am the shop-keeper of the Lord. |

| ਕੋਕਿਲ ਹੋਵਾ ਅੰਬਿ ਬਸਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ |
| kokil hovaa anb basaa sehaj sabadh beechaar || |
| If I were to become a cuckoo, living in a mango tree, I would still contemplate the Word of the Shabad. |

| ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| sehaj subhaae maeraa sahu milai dharasan roop apaar ||2|| |
| I would still meet my Lord and Master, with intuitive ease; the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of His Form, is incomparably beautiful. ||2|| |

| ਮਛੁਲੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਸਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਰਿ ॥ |
| mashhulee hovaa jal basaa jeea janth sabh saar || |
| If I were to become a fish, living in the water, I would still remember the Lord, who watches over all beings and creatures. |

| ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਉ ਮਿਲਉਗੀ ਬਾਹ ਪਸਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ |
| ouravaar paar maeraa sahu vasai ho milougee baah pasaar ||3|| |
| My Husband Lord dwells on this shore, and on the shore beyond; I would still meet Him, and hug Him close in my embrace. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਗਨਿ ਹੋਵਾ ਧਰ ਵਸਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| naagan hovaa dhhar vasaa sabadh vasai bho jaae || |
| If I were to become a snake, living in the ground, the Shabad would still dwell in my mind, and my fears would be dispelled. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੯॥ |
| naanak sadhaa sohaaganee jin jothee joth samaae ||4||2||19|| |
| O Nanak, they are forever the happy soul-brides, whose light merges into His Light. ||4||2||19|| |

| In that house where the Praises of the Creator are chanted |

| ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਿਵਰਹੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੧॥ |
| thith ghar gaavahu sohilaa sivarahu sirajanehaaro ||1|| |
| - in that house, sing the Songs of Praise, and meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||1|| |

| ਤੁਮ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ॥ |
| thum gaavahu maerae nirabho kaa sohilaa || |
| Sing the Songs of Praise of my Fearless Lord. |

| ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਾਉ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੋਹਿਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| ho vaaree jaao jith sohilai sadhaa sukh hoe ||1|| rehaao || |
| I am a sacrifice to that Song of Praise which brings eternal peace. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਦੇਖੈਗਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ |

| Day after day, He cares for His beings; the Great Giver watches over all. |

| ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| thaerae dhaanai keemath naa pavai this dhaathae kavan sumaar ||2|| |
| Your gifts cannot be appraised; how can anyone compare to the Giver? ||2|| |

| ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ॥ |
| sanbath saahaa likhiaa mil kar paavahu thael || |
| The day of my wedding is pre-ordained. Come - let's gather together and pour the oil over the threshold. |

| ਦੇਹੁ ਸਜਣ ਆਸੀਸੜੀਆ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੩॥ |
| dhaehu sajan aaseesarreeaa jio hovai saahib sio mael ||3|| |
| My friends, give me your blessings, that I may merge with my Lord and Master. ||3|| |

| ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਹੋ ਪਾਹੁਚਾ ਸਦੜੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਵੰਨਿ ॥ |
| ghar ghar eaeho paahuchaa sadharrae nith pavann || |
| Unto each and every home, into each and every heart, this summons is sent out; the call comes each and every day. |
