| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Naam abides within the mind. |

| eik gaavath rehae man saadh n paae || |
| Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai vich gaavehi birathhaa jaae || |
| In egotism, they sing, but it is wasted uselessly. |
|
| ਗਾਵਣਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| gaavan gaavehi jin naam piaar || |
| Those who love the Naam, sing the song. |
|
| ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ |
| saachee baanee sabadh beechaar ||1|| |
| They contemplate the True Bani of the Word, and the Shabad. ||1|| |
|
| ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ |
| gaavath rehai jae sathigur bhaavai || |
| They sing on and on, if it pleases the True Guru. |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| man than raathaa naam suhaavai ||1|| rehaao || |
| Their minds and bodies are embellished and adorned, attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥ |
| eik gaavehi eik bhagath karaehi || |
| Some sing, and some perform devotional worship. |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥ |
| naam n paavehi bin asanaeh || |
| Without heart-felt love, the Naam is not obtained. |
|
| ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ |
| sachee bhagath gur sabadh piaar || |
| True devotional worship consists of love for the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
|
| ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| bhagath karehi moorakh aap janaavehi || |
| The fools perform devotional worship by showing off; |
|
| ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਟਪਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| nach nach ttapehi bahuth dhukh paavehi || |
| they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain. |

| ਨਚਿਐ ਟਪਿਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| nachiai ttapiai bhagath n hoe || |
| By dancing and jumping, devotional worship is not performed. |
|
| ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
| sabadh marai bhagath paaeae jan soe ||3|| |
| But one who dies in the Word of the Shabad, obtains devotional worship. ||3|| |
|
| ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| bhagath vashhal bhagath karaaeae soe || |
| The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He inspires them to perform devotional worship. |
|
| ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਖੋਇ ॥ |
| sachee bhagath vichahu aap khoe || |
| True devotional worship consists of eliminating selfishness and conceit from within. |
|
| ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| maeraa prabh saachaa sabh bidhh jaanai || |
| My True God knows all ways and means. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੨੪॥ |
| naanak bakhasae naam pashhaanai ||4||4||24|| |
| O Nanak, He forgives those who recognize the Naam. ||4||4||24|| |

| When someone kills and subdues his own mind, his wandering nature is also subdued. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਮੂਏ ਕੈਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| bin mooeae kaisae har paae || |
| Without such a death, how can one find the Lord? |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| man marai dhaaroo jaanai koe || |
| Only a few know the medicine to kill the mind. |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| man sabadh marai boojhai jan soe ||1|| |
| One whose mind dies in the Word of the Shabad, understands Him. ||1|| |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ |
| jis no bakhasae dhae vaddiaaee || |
| He grants greatness to those whom He forgives. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| gur parasaadh har vasai man aaee ||1|| rehaao || |
| By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell within the mind. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
| guramukh karanee kaar kamaavai || |
| The Gurmukh practices doing good deeds; |
|
| ਤਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| thaa eis man kee sojhee paavai || |
| thus he comes to understand this mind. |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਮੈ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਗਲ ਮਿਕਦਾਰਾ ॥ |
| man mai math maigal mikadhaaraa || |
| The mind is like an elephant, drunk with wine. |
|
| ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ |
| gur ankas maar jeevaalanehaaraa ||2|| |
| The Guru is the rod which controls it, and shows it the way. ||2|| |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਅਸਾਧੁ ਸਾਧੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| man asaadhh saadhhai jan koe || |
| The mind is uncontrollable; how rare are those who subdue it. |
|
| ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| achar charai thaa niramal hoe || |
| Those who move the immovable become pure. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਇਆ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ |
| guramukh eihu man laeiaa savaar || |
| The Gurmukhs embellish and beautify this mind. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਤਜੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੩॥ |
| houmai vichahu thajae vikaar ||3|| |
| They eradicate egotism and corruption from within. ||3|| |
|
| ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਅਨੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ |
| jo dhhur raakhian mael milaae || |
| Those who, by pre-ordained destiny, are united in the Lord's Union, |
|
| ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| kadhae n vishhurrehi sabadh samaae || |
| are never separated from Him again; they are absorbed in the Shabad. |
|
| ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| aapanee kalaa aapae hee jaanai || |
| He Himself knows His Own Almighty Power. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੨੫॥ |

| In the love of duality, it wanders deluded by doubt. |
|
| ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥ |
| bahu chinthaa chithavai aap n pashhaanaa || |
| The mind is distracted by great anxiety; no one recognizes one's own self. |
|
| ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਵਿਹਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ |
| dhhandhhaa karathiaa anadhin vihaanaa ||1|| |
| Occupied with their own affairs, their nights and days are passing away. ||1|| |

| ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
| hiradhai raam ramahu maerae bhaaee || |
| Meditate on the Lord in your hearts, O my Siblings of Destiny. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| The Gurmukh's tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| The Gurmukhs recognize the Lord in their own hearts; |

| ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ |
| jagajeevan saev jug chaarae jaathaa || |
| they serve the Lord, the Life of the World. They are famous throughout the four ages. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ |
| houmai maar gur sabadh pashhaathaa || |
| They subdue egotism, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
|
| ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥ |
| kirapaa karae prabh karam bidhhaathaa ||2|| |
| God, the Architect of Destiny, showers His Mercy upon them. ||2|| |
