| manamukh soothaa maaeiaa mohi piaar || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are asleep, in love and attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| guramukh jaagae gun giaan beechaar || |
| The Gurmukhs are awake, contemplating spiritual wisdom and the Glory of God. |

| ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| sae jan jaagae jin naam piaar ||1|| |
| Those humble beings who love the Naam, are awake and aware. ||1|| |
|
| ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| sehajae jaagai savai n koe || |
| One who is awake to this intuitive wisdom does not fall asleep. |
|
| ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| poorae gur thae boojhai jan koe ||1|| rehaao || |
| How rare are those humble beings who understand this through the Perfect Guru. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਅਸੰਤੁ ਅਨਾੜੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ |
| asanth anaarree kadhae n boojhai || |
| The unsaintly blockhead shall never understand. |
|
| ਕਥਨੀ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ |
| kathhanee karae thai maaeiaa naal loojhai || |
| He babbles on and on, but he is infatuated with Maya. |
|
| ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੨॥ |
| andhh agiaanee kadhae n seejhai ||2|| |
| Blind and ignorant, he shall never be reformed. ||2|| |
|
| ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥ |

| In this age, salvation comes only from the Lord's Name. |

| ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ |
| viralaa ko paaeae gur sabadh veechaaraa || |
| How rare are those who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਇਸੁ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ |
| eis kalijug mehi karam dhharam n koee || |
| In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, no one is interested in good karma, or Dharmic faith. |

| ਕਲੀ ਕਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| kalee kaa janam chanddaal kai ghar hoee || |
| This Dark Age was born in the house of evil. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੩੦॥ |

| Those whose minds are attuned to the True, Carefree Lord enter the True Mansion of His Presence, and merge in the True Name. ||1|| |

| Listen, O my mind: contemplate the Word of the Shabad. |

| Chant the Lord's Name, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||Pause|| |

| In doubt he comes, and in doubt he goes. |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| eihu jag janamiaa dhoojai bhaae || |
| This world is born out of the love of duality. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| manamukh n chaethai aavai jaae ||2|| |
| The self-willed manmukh does not remember the Lord; he continues coming and going in reincarnation. ||2|| |

| ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| aap bhulaa k prabh aap bhulaaeiaa || |
| Does he himself go astray, or does God lead him astray? |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| eihu jeeo viddaanee chaakaree laaeiaa || |
| This soul is enjoined to the service of someone else. |
|
| ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| mehaa dhukh khattae birathhaa janam gavaaeiaa ||3|| |
| It earns only terrible pain, and this life is lost in vain. ||3|| |

| ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| kirapaa kar sathiguroo milaaeae || |
| Granting His Grace, He leads us to meet the True Guru. |

| ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤੇ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ |
| eaeko naam chaethae vichahu bharam chukaaeae || |
| Remembering the One Name, doubt is cast out from within. |

| Go and ask the Gurmukhs, who meditate on the Lord. |

| ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥ |
| gur saevaa thae man patheeaae || |
| Serving the Guru, the mind is satisfied. |
|
| ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ |
| sae dhhanavanth har naam kamaae || |
| Those who earn the Lord's Name are wealthy. |
|
| ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| poorae gur thae sojhee paae ||1|| |
| Through the Perfect Guru, understanding is obtained. ||1|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ |

| Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my Siblings of Destiny. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਘਾਲ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| guramukh saevaa har ghaal thhaae paaee ||1|| rehaao || |
| The Gurmukhs serve the Lord, and so they are accepted. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| aap pashhaanai man niramal hoe || |
| Those who recognize the self - their minds become pure. |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| jeevan mukath har paavai soe || |
| They become Jivan-mukta, liberated while yet alive, and they find the Lord. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| har gun gaavai math ootham hoe || |
| Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the intellect becomes pure and sublime, |
|
| ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| sehajae sehaj samaavai soe ||2|| |
| and they are easily and intuitively absorbed in the Lord. ||2|| |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae n saeviaa jaae || |
| In the love of duality, no one can serve the Lord. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa mehaa bikh khaae || |
| In egotism and Maya, they are eating toxic poison. |
|
| ਪੁਤਿ ਕੁਟੰਬਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇ ॥ |
| puth kuttanb grihi mohiaa maae || |
| They are emotionally attached to their children, family and home. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| manamukh andhhaa aavai jaae ||3|| |
| The blind, self-willed manmukhs come and go in reincarnation. ||3|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| har har naam dhaevai jan soe || anadhin bhagath gur sabadhee hoe || |
| Those, unto whom the Lord bestows His Name, worship Him night and day, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| How rare are those who understand the Guru's Teachings! |
