| Those who have died have been forgotten. |

| ਜੋ ਉਬਰੇ ਸੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਲਕੁ ਖਰੇ ॥ |
| jo oubarae sae bandhh lak kharae || |
| Those who survive have fastened their belts. |
|
| ਜਿਹ ਧੰਧੇ ਮਹਿ ਓਇ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥ |
| jih dhhandhhae mehi oue lapattaaeae || |
| They are busily occupied in their affairs; |
|
| ਉਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਗੁਣ ਦਿੜੀ ਉਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| oun thae dhugun dhirree oun maaeae ||1|| |
| they cling twice as hard to Maya. ||1|| |
|
| ਓਹ ਬੇਲਾ ਕਛੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| ouh baelaa kashh cheeth n aavai || |
| No one thinks of the time of death; |
|
| ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਾਹੂ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| binas jaae thaahoo lapattaavai ||1|| rehaao || |
| people grasp to hold that which shall pass away. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇਹ ॥ |
| aasaa bandhhee moorakh dhaeh || |
| The fools - their bodies are bound down by desires. |
|
| ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥ |
| kaam krodhh lapattiou asanaeh || |
| They are mired in sexual desire, anger and attachment; |
|
| ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਠਾਢੋ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥ |
| sir oopar thaadto dhharam raae || |
| the Righteous Judge of Dharma stands over their heads. |
|
| ਮੀਠੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| meethee kar kar bikhiaa khaae ||2|| |
| Believing it to be sweet, the fools eat poison. ||2|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਬੰਧਉ ਹਉ ਸਾਧਉ ਬੈਰੁ ॥ਹਮਰੀ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਘਾਲੈ ਪੈਰੁ ॥ |
| ho bandhho ho saadhho bair || hamaree bhoom koun ghaalai pair || |
| They say, ""I shall tie up my enemy, and I shall cut him down. Who dares to set foot upon my land? |

| ਹਉ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥ |
| ho panddith ho chathur siaanaa || |
| I am learned, I am clever and wise."" |

| ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੩॥ |
| karanaihaar n bujhai bigaanaa ||3|| |
| The ignorant ones do not recognize their Creator. ||3|| |
|
| ਅਪੁਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ |
| apunee gath mith aapae jaanai || |
| The Lord Himself knows His Own state and condition. |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਨੈ ॥ |
| kiaa ko kehai kiaa aakh vakhaanai || |
| What can anyone say? How can anyone describe Him? |
|
| ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥ |
| jith jith laavehi thith thith laganaa || |
| Whatever He attaches us to - to that we are attached. |
|
| ਅਪਨਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਭ ਕਾਹੂ ਮੰਗਨਾ ॥੪॥ |
| apanaa bhalaa sabh kaahoo manganaa ||4|| |
| Everyone begs for their own good. ||4|| |
|
| ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ॥ |
| sabh kishh thaeraa thoon karanaihaar || |
| Everything is Yours; You are the Creator Lord. |
|
| ਅੰਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ |
| anth naahee kishh paaraavaar || |
| You have no end or limitation. |
|
| ਦਾਸ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ |
| dhaas apanae ko dheejai dhaan || |
| Please give this gift to Your servant, |
|
| ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੫॥੯॥੭੮॥ |

| anik jathan nehee hoth shhuttaaraa || |
| By all sorts of efforts, people do not find salvation. |
|
| ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਆਗਲ ਭਾਰਾ ॥ |
| bahuth siaanap aagal bhaaraa || |
| Through clever tricks, the weight is only piled on more and more. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੇਤ ॥ |
| har kee saevaa niramal haeth || |
| Serving the Lord with a pure heart, |
|
| ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਓਲਾ ॥ |
| man maerae gahu har naam kaa oulaa || |
| What is the human? What power does he have? |
|
| ਤੁਝੈ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾਤਾ ਝੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| The hot winds shall never even touch you. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ |

| Like a boat in the ocean of fear; |

| ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਦੀਪਕ ਦੀਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
| andhhakaar dheepak dheepaahi || |
| like a lamp which illumines the darkness; |
|
| ਅਗਨਿ ਸੀਤ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਸਿ ਦੂਖ ॥ |
| agan seeth kaa laahas dhookh || |
| like fire which takes away the pain of cold |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੂਖ ॥੨॥ |
| naam japath man hovath sookh ||2|| |
| - just so, chanting the Name, the mind becomes peaceful. ||2|| |
|
| ਉਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ॥ |
| outhar jaae thaerae man kee piaas || |
| The thirst of your mind shall be quenched, |
|
| ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਗਲੀ ਆਸ ॥ |
| pooran hovai sagalee aas || |
| and all hopes shall be fulfilled. |

| ਡੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਚੀਤੁ ॥ |
| ddolai naahee thumaraa cheeth || |
| Your consciousness shall not waver. |
|
| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥ |
| anmrith naam jap guramukh meeth ||3|| |
| Meditate on the Ambrosial Naam as Gurmukh, O my friend. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| naam aoukhadhh soee jan paavai || |
| He alone receives the panacea, the medicine of the Naam, |
|
| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ॥ |
| kar kirapaa jis aap dhivaavai || |
| unto whom the Lord, in His Grace, bestows it. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸੈ ॥ |
| har har naam jaa kai hiradhai vasai || |
| One whose heart is filled with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਸੈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੭੯॥ |
| dhookh dharadh thih naanak nasai ||4||10||79|| |
| - O Nanak, his pains and sorrows are eliminated. ||4||10||79|| |

| ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਅਘਾਨਾ ॥ |
| bahuth dharab kar man n aghaanaa || |
| Even with vast sums of wealth, the mind is not satisfied. |
|
| ਅਨਿਕ ਰੂਪ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਹ ਪਤੀਆਨਾ ॥ |
| anik roop dhaekh neh patheeaanaa || |
| Gazing upon countless beauties, the man is not satisfied. |
|
| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਜਾਨਿ ਮੇਰੀ ॥ |
| puthr kalathr ourajhiou jaan maeree || |
| He is so involved with his wife and sons - he believes that they belong to him. |
|
| ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਓਇ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
| ouh binasai oue bhasamai dtaeree ||1|| |
| That wealth shall pass away, and those relatives shall be reduced to ashes. ||1|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਦੇਖਉ ਬਿਲਲਾਤੇ ॥ |
| bin har bhajan dhaekho bilalaathae || |
| Without meditating and vibrating on the Lord, they are crying out in pain. |
|
| ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਨੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhhrig than dhhrig dhhan maaeiaa sang raathae ||1|| rehaao || |
| Their bodies are cursed, and their wealth is cursed - they are imbued with Maya. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਬਿਗਾਰੀ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੀਜਹਿ ਦਾਮ ॥ |

| The servant carries the bags of money on his head, |

| ਓਇ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਉਨ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਮ ॥ |
| oue khasamai kai grihi oun dhookh sehaam || |
| Remember, remember, remember Him in meditation; He is the treasure of excellence. ||3|| |

| The man sits as a king in his dreams, |
