| ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪਸਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੨॥ |
| naethr pasaarai thaa niraarathh kaajaa ||2|| |
| but when he opens his eyes, he sees that it was all in vain. ||2|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਾ ਖੇਤ ਊਪਰਿ ਪਰਾਏ ॥ |
| jio raakhaa khaeth oopar paraaeae || |
| The watchman oversees the field of another, |
|
| ਖੇਤੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਏ ॥ |
| khaeth khasam kaa raakhaa outh jaaeae || |
| but the field belongs to his master, while he must get up and depart. |
|
| ਉਸੁ ਖੇਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰਾਖਾ ਕੜੈ ॥ |
| ous khaeth kaaran raakhaa karrai || |
| He works so hard, and suffers for that field, |
|
| ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪਾਲੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪੜੈ ॥੩॥ |
| this kai paalai kashhoo n parrai ||3|| |
| but still, nothing comes into his hands. ||3|| |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥ |
| jis kaa raaj thisai kaa supanaa || |
| The dream is His, and the kingdom is His; |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਨੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਲਾਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ॥ |
| jin maaeiaa dheenee thin laaee thrisanaa || |
| He who has given the wealth of Maya, has infused the desire for it. |
|
| ਆਪਿ ਬਿਨਾਹੇ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ |
| aap binaahae aap karae raas || |
| He Himself annihilates, and He Himself restores. |
|

| ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੇਖੀ ॥ |
| bahu rang maaeiaa bahu bidhh paekhee || |
| I have gazed upon the many forms of Maya, in so many ways. |
|
| ਕਲਮ ਕਾਗਦ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਲੇਖੀ ॥ |
| kalam kaagadh siaanap laekhee || |
| With pen and paper, I have written clever things. |
|
| ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਹੋਇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖਾਨ ॥ |
| mehar malook hoe dhaekhiaa khaan || |
| I have seen what it is to be a chief, a king, and an emperor, |
|
| ਤਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨ ॥੧॥ |
| thaa thae naahee man thripathaan ||1|| |
| but they do not satisfy the mind. ||1|| |
|
| ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਸੰਤ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| so sukh mo ko santh bathaavahu || |
| Show me that peace, O Saints, |
|
| ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| thrisanaa boojhai man thripathaavahu ||1|| rehaao || |
| which will quench my thirst and satisfy my mind. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਅਸੁ ਪਵਨ ਹਸਤਿ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥ |
| as pavan hasath asavaaree || |
| You may have horses as fast as the wind, elephants to ride on, |
|
| ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ |
| choaa chandhan saej sundhar naaree || |
| sandalwood oil, and beautiful women in bed, |
|
| ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਆਖਾਰੇ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ |
| natt naattik aakhaarae gaaeiaa || |
| actors in dramas, singing in theaters |
|
| ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| thaa mehi man santhokh n paaeiaa ||2|| |
| - but even with them, the mind does not find contentment. ||2|| |
|
| ਤਖਤੁ ਸਭਾ ਮੰਡਨ ਦੋਲੀਚੇ ॥ |
| thakhath sabhaa manddan dholeechae || |
| You may have a throne at the royal court, with beautiful decorations and soft carpets, |
|
| ਸਗਲ ਮੇਵੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗੀਚੇ ॥ |
| sagal maevae sundhar baageechae || |
| all sorts of luscious fruits and beautiful gardens, |
|
| ਆਖੇੜ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥ |
| aakhaerr birath raajan kee leelaa || |
| the excitement of the chase and princely pleasures |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਨ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਹੀਲਾ ॥੩॥ |
| man n suhaelaa parapanch heelaa ||3|| |
| - but still, the mind is not made happy by such illusory diversions. ||3|| |
|
| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਚੁ ਕਹਿਆ ॥ |
| kar kirapaa santhan sach kehiaa || |
| In their kindness, the Saints have told me of the True One, |
|
| ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਇਹੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਲਹਿਆ ॥ |
| sarab sookh eihu aanandh lehiaa || |
| and so I have obtained all comforts and joy. |
|
| ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥ |
| saadhhasang har keerathan gaaeeai || |
| By all sorts of efforts, people do not find salvation. |
|
| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥ |
| kahu naanak vaddabhaagee paaeeai ||4|| |
| Says Nanak, through great good fortune, I have found this. ||4|| |
|
| ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ |
| jaa kai har dhhan soee suhaelaa || |
| One who obtains the wealth of the Lord becomes happy. |

| By God's Grace, I have joined the Saadh Sangat. ||1||Second Pause||12||81|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ |
| praanee jaanai eihu than maeraa || |
| The mortal claims this body as his own. |
|
| ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਲਪਟੇਰਾ ॥ |
| bahur bahur ouaahoo lapattaeraa || |
| Again and again, he clings to it. |
|
| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਕਾ ਫਾਸਾ ॥ |
| puthr kalathr girasath kaa faasaa || |
| He is entangled with his children, his wife and household affairs. |
|
| ਹੋਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ |
| hon n paaeeai raam kae dhaasaa ||1|| |
| He cannot be the slave of the Lord. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥ |
| kavan s bidhh jith raam gun gaae || |
| - just so, chanting the Name, the mind becomes peaceful. ||2|| |
|
| ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਮਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| kavan s math jith tharai eih maae ||1|| rehaao || |
| What is that intellect, by which this person might swim across, O mother? ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਜੋ ਭਲਾਈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ |
| jo bhalaaee so buraa jaanai || |
| That which is for his own good, he thinks is evil. |
|
| ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਬਿਖੈ ਸਮਾਨੈ ॥ |
| saach kehai so bikhai samaanai || |
| If someone tells him the truth, he looks upon that as poison. |
|
| ਜਾਣੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਤ ਅਰੁ ਹਾਰ ॥ |
| jaanai naahee jeeth ar haar || |
| He cannot tell victory from defeat. |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਵਲੇਵਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੨॥ |
| eihu valaevaa saakath sansaar ||2|| |
| This is the way of life in the world of the faithless cynic. ||2|| |
|
| ਜੋ ਹਲਾਹਲ ਸੋ ਪੀਵੈ ਬਉਰਾ ॥ |
| jo halaahal so peevai bouraa || |
| The demented fool drinks in the deadly poison, |
|
| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਉਰਾ ॥ |
| anmrith naam jaanai kar kouraa || |
| while he believes the Ambrosial Naam to be bitter. |
|
| ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਰਿ ॥ |
| saadhhasang kai naahee naer || |
| He does not even approach the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; |
|
| ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਾ ਫੇਰਿ ॥੩॥ |
| lakh chouraaseeh bhramathaa faer ||3|| |
| he wanders lost through 8.4 million incarnations. ||3|| |
|
| ਏਕੈ ਜਾਲਿ ਫਹਾਏ ਪੰਖੀ ॥ |
| eaekai jaal fehaaeae pankhee || |
| The birds are caught in the net of Maya; |
|
| ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੋਗ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ॥ |
| ras ras bhog karehi bahu rangee || |
| immersed in the pleasures of love, they frolic in so many ways. |
|
| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਜਾਲ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੮੨॥ |
| kahu naanak jis bheae kirapaal || gur poorai thaa kae kaattae jaal ||4||13||82|| |
| Says Nanak, the Perfect Guru has cut away the noose from those, unto whom the Lord has shown His Mercy. ||4||13||82|| |
