| ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥ |

| Those who serve the One Lord, do not know any other. |

| ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥ |
| parapanch biaadhh thiaagai kavarae || |
| They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts. |
 |
| ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
| bhaae milai sach saachai sach rae ||1|| |
| Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1|| |

| ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| aisaa raam bhagath jan hoee || |
| Such are the humble devotees of the Lord. |

| ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| har gun gaae milai mal dhhoee ||1|| rehaao || |
| They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ |
| oonadhho kaval sagal sansaarai || |
| The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down. |
 |
| ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥ |
| dhuramath agan jagath parajaarai || |
| The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world. |
 |
| ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥ |
| so oubarai gur sabadh beechaarai ||2|| |
| They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2|| |

| ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥ |
| bhring pathang kunchar ar meenaa || |
| The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish |
 |
| ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥ |
| mirag marai sehi apunaa keenaa || |
| and the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die. |
 |
| ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥ |
| thrisanaa raach thath nehee beenaa ||3|| |
| Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3|| |
 |
| ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| kaam chithai kaaman hithakaaree || |
| The lover of women is obsessed with sex. |
 |
| ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| krodhh binaasai sagal vikaaree || |
| All the wicked are ruined by their anger. |
 |
| ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ |
| par ghar cheeth manamukh ddolaae || |
| The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife. |
 |
| ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ |
| gal jaevaree dhhandhhai lapattaae || |
| The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts. |
 |
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥ |
| guramukh shhoottas har gun gaae ||5|| |
| The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥ |
| jio than bidhhavaa par ko dhaeee || |
| The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger; |
 |
| ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥ |
| kaam dhaam chith par vas saeee || |
| she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ |
| bin pir thripath n kabehoon hoee ||6|| |
| , but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6|| |

| ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥ |
| parr parr pothhee sinmrith paathaa || baedh puraan parrai sun thhaattaa || |
| You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Simritees, Vedas and Puraanas; |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥ |
| bin ras raathae man bahu naattaa ||7|| |
| but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ |
| jio chaathrik jal praem piaasaa || |
| As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain, |
 |
| ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥ |
| jio meenaa jal maahi oulaasaa || |
| and as the fish delights in the water, |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥ |
| naanak har ras pee thripathaasaa ||8||11|| |
| Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11|| |

| ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥ |
| vaes karai bahu bhasam lagaavai || |
| even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes. |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| naam bisaar bahur pashhuthaavai ||1|| |
| Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1|| |

| Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind. |

| choaa chandhan agar kapoor || |
| The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor, |
 |
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| maaeiaa magan param padh dhoor || |
| and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity. |

| ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥ |
| naam bisaariai sabh koorro koor ||2|| |
| Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2|| |

| ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ |
| naejae vaajae thakhath salaam || |
| Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others |
 |
| ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥ |
| adhhakee thrisanaa viaapai kaam || |
| only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire. |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥ |
| bin har jaachae bhagath n naam ||3|| |
| Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3|| |

| ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥ |
| vaadh ahankaar naahee prabh maelaa || |
| Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism. |
 |
| ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ |
| man dhae paavehi naam suhaelaa || |
| But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained. |

| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae agiaan dhuhaelaa ||4|| |
| In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4|| |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥ |
| bin dham kae soudhaa nehee haatt || |
| Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store. |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥ |
| bin bohithh saagar nehee vaatt || |
| Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean. |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥ |
| bin gur saevae ghaattae ghaatt ||5|| |
| Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5|| |

| ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥ |

| Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way. |

| vaahu vaahu this ko jis kaa eihu jeeo || |
| Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul. |

| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥ |
| gur sabadhee mathh anmrith peeo || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar. |

| ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥ |
| naam vaddaaee thudhh bhaanai dheeo ||7|| |
| The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7|| |

| Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother? |

| Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary. |
