| ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ |
| houmai karath bhaekhee nehee jaaniaa || |
| Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ |
| guramukh bhagath viralae man maaniaa ||1|| |
| How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ |
| ho ho karath nehee sach paaeeai || |
| By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| houmai jaae param padh paaeeai ||1|| rehaao || |
| But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| houmai kar raajae bahu dhhaavehi || |
| The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥ |
| houmai khapehi janam mar aavehi ||2|| |
| But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥ |
| houmai nivarai gur sabadh veechaarai || |
| Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
|
| ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥ |
| chanchal math thiaagai panch sanghaarai ||3|| |
| One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3|| |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥ |
| anthar saach sehaj ghar aavehi || |
| With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found. |
|
| ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥ |
| raajan jaan param gath paavehi ||4|| |
| Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4|| |
|
| ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ |
| sach karanee gur bharam chukaavai || |
| The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true. |
|
| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ |
| nirabho kai ghar thaarree laavai ||5|| |
| They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| ho ho kar maranaa kiaa paavai || |
| Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain? |
|
| ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ |
| pooraa gur bhaettae so jhagar chukaavai ||6|| |
| Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6|| |
|
| ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| jaethee hai thaethee kihu naahee || |
| Whatever exists, is in reality nothing. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਵੈ ॥ |
| houmai bandhhan bandhh bhavaavai || |
| Egotism binds people in bondage, and causes them to wander around lost. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥ |
| naanak raam bhagath sukh paavai ||8||13|| |
| O Nanak, peace is obtained through devotional worship of the Lord. ||8||13|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਕਾਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| prathhamae brehamaa kaalai ghar aaeiaa || |
| First, Brahma entered the house of Death. |
|
| ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਇਆਲਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| breham kamal paeiaal n paaeiaa || |
| Brahma entered the lotus, and searched the nether regions, but he did not find the end of it. |
|
| ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| aagiaa nehee leenee bharam bhulaaeiaa ||1|| |
| He did not accept the Lord's Order - he was deluded by doubt. ||1|| |
|
| ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਿ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਆ ॥ |
| jo oupajai so kaal sanghaariaa || |
| Whoever is created, shall be destroyed by Death. |
|
| ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| ham har raakhae gur sabadh beechaariaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| But I am protected by the Lord; I contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohae dhaevee sabh dhaevaa || |
| All the gods and goddesses are enticed by Maya. |
|
| ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ |
| kaal n shhoddai bin gur kee saevaa || |
| Death cannot be avoided, without serving the Guru. |
|
| ਓਹੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੨॥ |
| ouhu abinaasee alakh abhaevaa ||2|| |
| That Lord is Imperishable, Invisible and Inscrutable. ||2|| |
|
| ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਨਾ ॥ |
| sulathaan khaan baadhisaah nehee rehanaa || |
| The sultans, emperors and kings shall not remain. |
|
| ਨਾਮਹੁ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਨਾ ॥ |
| naamahu bhoolai jam kaa dhukh sehanaa || |
| Forgetting the Name, they shall endure the pain of death. |
|
| ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹਨਾ ॥੩॥ |
| mai dhhar naam jio raakhahu rehanaa ||3|| |
| My only Support is the Naam, the Name of the Lord; as He keeps me, I survive. ||3|| |
|
| ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ॥ |
| choudhharee raajae nehee kisai mukaam || |
| The leaders and kings shall not remain. |
|
| ਸਾਹ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਮ ॥ |
| saah marehi sanchehi maaeiaa dhaam || |
| The bankers shall die, after accumulating their wealth and money. |
|
| ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥ |
| mai dhhan dheejai har anmrith naam ||4|| |
| Grant me, O Lord, the wealth of Your Ambrosial Naam. ||4|| |
|
| ਰਯਤਿ ਮਹਰ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੈ ॥ |
| rayath mehar mukadham sikadhaarai || |
| The people, rulers, leaders and chiefs |
|
| ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ |
| nihachal koe n dhisai sansaarai || |
| none of them shall be able to remain in the world. |
|
| ਅਫਰਿਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੫॥ |
| afario kaal koorr sir maarai ||5|| |
| Death is inevitable; it strikes the heads of the false. ||5|| |
|
| ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| nihachal eaek sachaa sach soee || |
| Only the One Lord, the Truest of the True, is permanent. |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਸਭ ਗੋਈ ॥ |
| jin kar saajee thinehi sabh goee || |
| He who created and fashioned everything, shall destroy it. |
|
| ਓਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ |
| ouhu guramukh jaapai thaan path hoee ||6|| |
| One who becomes Gurmukh and meditates on the Lord is honored. ||6|| |
|
| ਕਾਜੀ ਸੇਖ ਭੇਖ ਫਕੀਰਾ ॥ |
| kaajee saekh bhaekh fakeeraa || |
| The Qazis, Shaykhs and Fakeers in religious robes |
|
| ਵਡੇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰਾ ॥ |
| vaddae kehaavehi houmai than peeraa || |
| call themselves great; but through their egotism, their bodies are suffering in pain. |
|
| ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੭॥ |
| kaal n shhoddai bin sathigur kee dhheeraa ||7|| |
| Death does not spare them, without the Support of the True Guru. ||7|| |
|
| ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਅਰੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥ |
| kaal jaal jihavaa ar nainee || |
| The trap of Death is hanging over their tongues and eyes. |
|
| ਕਾਨੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੈਣੀ ॥ |
| kaanee kaal sunai bikh bainee || |
| Death is over their ears, when they hear talk of evil. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥ |
| bin sabadhai moothae dhin rainee ||8|| |
| Without the Shabad, they are plundered, day and night. ||8|| |
|
| ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਿ ਸਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥ |
| hiradhai saach vasai har naae || kaal n johi sakai gun gaae || |
| Death cannot touch those whose hearts are filled with the True Name of the Lord, and who sing the Glories of God. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੯॥੧੪॥ |
| naanak guramukh sabadh samaae ||9||14|| |
| O Nanak, the Gurmukh is absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||9||14|| |
