| The disguisers put on their various disguises. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| anthar thisanaa firai ahankaaree || |
| Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically. |

| ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ |
| aap n cheenai baajee haaree ||6|| |
| They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6|| |

| ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ |
| kaaparr pehir karae chathuraaee || |
| Putting on religious robes, they act so clever, |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi ath bharam bhulaaee || |
| but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥ |
| bin gur saevae bahuth dhukh paaee ||7|| |
| Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7|| |

| ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ |
| naam rathae sadhaa bairaagee || |
| Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever. |
|
| ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ |
| grihee anthar saach liv laagee || |
| Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥ |

| From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire. |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ |
| thrai gun bharamae naahee nij ghar vaasaa ||1|| |
| They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1|| |

| ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ham har raakhae sathiguroo milaaeiaa || |
| The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru. |

| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ |
| thrai gun baanee breham janjaalaa || |
| The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities. |

| ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥ |
| thath n cheenehi bannehi pandd paraalaa ||2|| |
| They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2|| |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| manamukh agiaan kumaarag paaeae || |
| The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥ |
| har naam bisaariaa bahu karam dhrirraaeae || |
| They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals. |
|
| ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥ |
| bhavajal ddoobae dhoojai bhaaeae ||3|| |
| They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kaa muhathaaj panddith kehaavai || |
| Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars; |

| ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| bikhiaa raathaa bahuth dhukh paavai || |
| stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain. |
|
| ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ |
| jam kaa gal jaevarraa nith kaal santhaavai ||4|| |
| The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| guramukh jamakaal naerr n aavai || |
| The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥ |
| houmai dhoojaa sabadh jalaavai || |
| Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality. |
|
| ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ |
| naamae raathae har gun gaavai ||5|| |
| Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa dhaasee bhagathaa kee kaar kamaavai || |
| Maya is the slave of the Lord's devotees; it works for them. |
|
| ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| charanee laagai thaa mehal paavai || |
| One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. |
|
| ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ |
| sadh hee niramal sehaj samaavai ||6|| |
| He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ |
| har kathhaa sunehi sae dhhanavanth dhisehi jug maahee || |
| Those who listen to the Lord's Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world. |

| ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥ |
| thin ko sabh nivehi anadhin pooj karaahee || |
| Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day. |
|
| ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥ |
| sehajae gun ravehi saachae man maahee ||7|| |
| They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7|| |
|
| ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
| poorai sathigur sabadh sunaaeiaa || |
| The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad; |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thrai gun maettae chouthhai chith laaeiaa || |
| it eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥ |
| naanak houmai maar breham milaaeiaa ||8||4|| |
| O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4|| |

| Brahma studied the Vedas, but these lead only to debates and disputes. |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
| anthar thaamas aap n pashhaanai || |
| He is filled with darkness; he does not understand himself. |
|
| ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥ |
| thaa prabh paaeae gur sabadh vakhaanai ||1|| |
| And yet, if he chants the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he finds God. ||1|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| gur saevaa karo fir kaal n khaae || |
| So serve the Guru, and you shall not be consumed by death. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| manamukh khaadhhae dhoojai bhaae ||1|| rehaao || |
| The self-willed manmukhs have been consumed by the love of duality. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥ |
| guramukh praanee aparaadhhee seedhhae || |
| Becoming Gurmukh, the sinful mortals are purified. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadh anthar sehaj reedhhae || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within. |

| ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥ |
| maeraa prabh paaeiaa gur kai sabadh seedhhae ||2|| |
| I have found my God, through the Guru's Shabad, and I have been reformed. ||2|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur maelae prabh aap milaaeae || |
| God Himself unites us in Union with the True Guru, |
|
| ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥ |
| maerae prabh saachae kai man bhaaeae || |
| when we become pleasing to the Mind of my True God. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥ |
| har gun gaavehi sehaj subhaaeae ||3|| |
| They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the poise of celestial peace. ||3|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥ |
| bin gur saachae bharam bhulaaeae || |
| Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥ |
| manamukh andhhae sadhaa bikh khaaeae || |
| The blind, self-willed manmukhs constantly eat poison. |
|
| ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥ |
| jam ddandd sehehi sadhaa dhukh paaeae ||4|| |
| They are beaten by the Messenger of Death with his rod, and they suffer in constant pain. ||4|| |
