| The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord. |

| Subduing egotism, they lovingly center their consciousness on the True Lord. |

| ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥ |
| sadhaa rehai har naam liv laaee ||5|| |
| They keep their consciousness constantly focused on the Lord's Name. ||5|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥ |
| sathigur saevehi sae jan niramal pavithaa || |
| Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are pure and immaculate. |

| ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥ |
| man sio man milaae sabh jag jeethaa || |
| Merging their minds into the Mind, they conquer the entire world. |
|
| ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥ |
| ein bidhh kusal thaerai maerae meethaa ||6|| |
| In this way, you too shall find happiness, O my friend. ||6|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |

| Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with fruitful rewards. |

| ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |
| hiradhai naam vichahu aap gavaaeae || |
| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in their hearts; selfishness and conceit depart from within them. |

| ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| anehadh baanee sabadh vajaaeae ||7|| |
| The unstruck melody of the Shabad vibrates for them. ||7|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ |

| Who - who has not been purified by the True Guru, O my Siblings of Destiny? |

| ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| bhagathee seedhhae dhar sobhaa paaee || |
| The devotees are purified, and honored in His Court. |

| Those who speak of the three qualities - their doubts do not depart. |

| ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| bandhhan n thoottehi mukath n paae || |
| Their bonds are not broken, and they do not obtain liberation. |
|
| ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ |
| mukath dhaathaa sathigur jug maahi ||1|| |
| The True Guru is the Bestower of liberation in this age. ||1|| |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ |
| guramukh praanee bharam gavaae || |
| Those mortals who become Gurmukh give up their doubts. |

| ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sehaj dhhun oupajai har liv laae ||1|| rehaao || |
| The celestial music wells up, when they lovingly attune their consciousness to the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ |

| They do not remember the Name of the Creator Lord. |
|
| ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ |
| mar janmehi fir vaaro vaaraa ||2|| |
| They die, and are reborn, over and over, again and again. ||2|| |
|
| ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
| andhhae guroo thae bharam n jaaee || |
| Those whose guru is spiritually blind - their doubts are not dispelled. |
|
| ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
| mool shhodd laagae dhoojai bhaaee || |
| Abandoning the Source of all, they have become attached to the love of duality. |
|
| ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| bikh kaa maathaa bikh maahi samaaee ||3|| |
| Infected with poison, they are immersed in poison. ||3|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kar mool janthr bharamaaeae || |
| Believing Maya to be the source of all, they wander in doubt. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥ |
| har jeeo visariaa dhoojai bhaaeae || |
| They have forgotten the Dear Lord, and they are in love with duality. |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥ |
| jis nadhar karae so param gath paaeae ||4|| |
| The supreme status is obtained only by those who are blessed with His Glance of Grace. ||4|| |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥ |
| anthar saach baahar saach varathaaeae || |
| One who has Truth pervading within, radiates Truth outwardly as well. |
|
| ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛਪੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਰਖੈ ਛਪਾਏ ॥ |
| saach n shhapai jae ko rakhai shhapaaeae || |
| The Truth does not remain hidden, even though one may try to hide it. |
|
| ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੫॥ |
| giaanee boojhehi sehaj subhaaeae ||5|| |
| The spiritually wise know this intuitively. ||5|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ |
| guramukh saach rehiaa liv laaeae || |
| The Gurmukhs keep their consciousness lovingly centered on the Lord. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa sabadh jalaaeae || |
| Ego and Maya are burned away by the Word of the Shabad. |
|
| ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥ |
| maeraa prabh saachaa mael milaaeae ||6|| |
| My True God unites them in His Union. ||6|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur dhaathaa sabadh sunaaeae || |
| The True Guru, The Giver, preaches the Shabad. |
|
| ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ |
| dhhaavath raakhai thaak rehaaeae || |
| He controls, and restrains, and holds still the wandering mind. |
|
| ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| poorae gur thae sojhee paaeae ||7|| |
| Understanding is obtained through the Perfect Guru. ||7|| |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥ |
| aapae karathaa srisatt siraj jin goee || |
| The Creator Himself has created the universe; He Himself shall destroy it. |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ |
| this bin dhoojaa avar n koee || |
| Without Him, there is no other at all. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੬॥ |

| They serve the Name, and through the Name, they are absorbed in intuitive peace and poise. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ |
| anmrith naam rasanaa nith gaavai || |
| With their tongues, they continually sing the Ambrosial Naam. |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| jis no kirapaa karae so har ras paavai ||1|| |
| They obtain the Lord's Name; the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||1|| |

| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸਾ ॥ |
| anadhin hiradhai japo jagadheesaa || |
| Night and day, within your heart, meditate on the Lord of the Universe. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਸੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| The Gurmukhs obtain the supreme state of peace. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੂਖੁ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ |

| Peace comes to fill the hearts of those |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ |
| guramukh gaavehi sach gunathaas || |
| who, as Gurmukh, sing of the True Lord, the treasure of excellence. |
|
| ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥ |
| dhaasan dhaas nith hovehi dhaas || |
| They become the constant slaves of the slaves of the Lord's slaves. |
|
| ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥ |
| grih kuttanb mehi sadhaa oudhaas ||2|| |
| Within their households and families, they remain always detached. ||2|| |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| jeevan mukath guramukh ko hoee || |
| How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, become Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive. |
