| Heat and cold are all the same to them. |

| ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ |
| n(g)iaanee thath guramukh beechaaree || |
| The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality; |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੫॥ |
| naanak jaa ko kirapaa dhhaaree ||5|| |
| O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5|| |

| ਆਵਨ ਆਏ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥ |
| aavan aaeae srisatt mehi bin boojhae pas dtor || |
| Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak guramukh so bujhai jaa kai bhaag mathhor ||1|| |
| O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1|| |

| ਯਾ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| yaa jug mehi eaekehi ko aaeiaa || |
| They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord. |
|
| ਜਨਮਤ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| janamath mohiou mohanee maaeiaa || |
| But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya. |
|
| ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਕਰਤੇ ॥ |
| garabh kuntt mehi ouradhh thap karathae || |
| Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation. |
|
| ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਹਤੇ ॥ |
| saas saas simarath prabh rehathae || |
| They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath. |
|
| ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਛੋਡਿ ਛਡਾਨਾ ॥ |
| ourajh parae jo shhodd shhaddaanaa || |
| But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind. |
|
| ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥ |
| dhaevanehaar manehi bisaraanaa || |
| They forget the Great Giver from their minds. |
|
| ਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ਇਤ ਉਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥ |
| dhhaarahu kirapaa jisehi gusaaee || eith outh naanak this bisarahu naahee ||6|| |
| O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6|| |

| aavath hukam binaas hukam aagiaa bhinn n koe || |
| By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command. |

| ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| aavan jaanaa thih mittai naanak jih man soe ||1|| |
| Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1|| |

| ਏਊ ਜੀਅ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਵਾਸੇ ॥ |
| eaeoo jeea bahuth grabh vaasae || |
| This soul has lived in many wombs. |
|
| ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਜੋਨਿ ਫਾਸੇ ॥ |
| moh magan meeth jon faasae || |
| Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation. |
|
| ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥ |
| ein maaeiaa thrai gun bas keenae || |
| This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities. |
|
| ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥ |
| aapan moh ghattae ghatt dheenae || |
| Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart. |
|
| ਏ ਸਾਜਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| eae saajan kashh kehahu oupaaeiaa || |
| O friend, tell me some way, |
|
| ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jaa thae tharo bikham eih maaeiaa || |
| by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya. |
|
| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| kar kirapaa sathasang milaaeae || |
| The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| naanak thaa kai nikatt n maaeae ||7|| |
| O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7|| |

| kirath kamaavan subh asubh keenae thin prabh aap || |
| God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions. |

| ਪਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥੧॥ |
| pas aapan ho ho karai naanak bin har kehaa kamaath ||1|| |
| The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1|| |

| The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions. |

| ਆਪਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ |
| aapehi paap punn bisathhaaraa || |
| He Himself distributes sins and noble acts. |
|
| ਇਆ ਜੁਗ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਲਾਇਓ ॥ |
| eiaa jug jith jith aapehi laaeiou || |
| In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them. |
|
| ਸੋ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥ |
| so so paaeiou j aap dhivaaeiou || |
| They receive that which the Lord Himself gives. |
|
| ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਊ ॥ |
| ouaa kaa anth n jaanai kooo || |
| No one knows His limits. |
|
| ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਊ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਊ ॥ |
| jo jo karai sooo fun hooo || |
| Whatever He does, comes to pass. |
|
| ਏਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਗਲਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ |
| eaekehi thae sagalaa bisathhaaraa || |
| From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥ |
| naanak aap savaaranehaaraa ||8|| |
| O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8|| |

| raach rehae banithaa binodh kusam rang bikh sor || |
| Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon. |

| ਰੇ ਮਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਹ ਰਚਹੁ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਬੰਧਨ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
| rae man bin har jeh rachahu theh theh bandhhan paahi || |
| O mind: without the Lord, whatever you are involved in shall bind you in chains. |

| ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਤਹੂ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਸਾਕਤ ਤੇਊ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ |
| jih bidhh kathehoo n shhootteeai saakath thaeoo kamaahi || |
| The faithless cynic does those deeds which will never allow him to be emancipated. |
|
| ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਰਤ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰ ॥ |
| ho ho karathae karam rath thaa ko bhaar afaar || |
| Acting in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the lovers of rituals carry the unbearable load. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਉ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਤਉ ਏਊ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| preeth nehee jo naam sio tho eaeoo karam bikaar || |
| When there is no love for the Naam, then these rituals are corrupt. |
|
| ਬਾਧੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ॥ |
| baadhhae jam kee jaevaree meethee maaeiaa rang || |
| The rope of death binds those who are in love with the sweet taste of Maya. |
|
| ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੇ ਮੋਹੇ ਨਹ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਹੂ ਸੰਗ ॥ |
| bhram kae mohae neh bujhehi so prabh sadhehoo sang || |
| Deluded by doubt, they do not understand that God is always with them. |
|
| ਲੇਖੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ਨ ਸੁਧਿ ॥ |
| laekhai ganath n shhootteeai kaachee bheeth n sudhh || |
| When their accounts are called for, they shall not be released; their wall of mud cannot be washed clean. |
|
| ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਿਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੯॥ |
| jisehi bujhaaeae naanakaa thih guramukh niramal budhh ||9|| |
| One who is made to understand - O Nanak, that Gurmukh obtains immaculate understanding. ||9|| |
