| He Himself made the earth; He Himself made the sky. |

| ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਗਿਰਾਸੁ ॥ |
| vich aapae janth oupaaeian mukh aapae dhaee giraas || |
| He Himself created the beings there, and He Himself places food in their mouths. |

| ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ |
| sabh aapae aap varathadhaa aapae hee gunathaas || |
| He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself is the Treasure of Excellence. |

| ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਟੇ ਤਾਸੁ ॥੨॥ |
| jan naanak naam dhhiaae thoo sabh kilavikh kattae thaas ||2|| |
| O servant Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; He shall take away all your sinful mistakes. ||2|| |

| thoo sachaa saahib sach hai sach sachae bhaavai || |
| You, O True Lord and Master, are True; the Truth is pleasing to the True One. |

| ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਜਮ ਕੰਕਰੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| jo thudhh sach salaahadhae thin jam kankar naerr n aavai || |
| The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who praise You, O True Lord. |

| ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਦਰਿ ਉਜਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ |
| thin kae mukh dhar oujalae jin har hiradhai sachaa bhaavai || |
| Their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord; the Lord is pleasing to their hearts. |

| ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਪਿਛਾਹਾ ਸਟੀਅਨਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| koorriaar pishhaahaa satteean koorr hiradhai kapatt mehaa dhukh paavai || |
| The false ones are left behind; because of the falsehood and deceit in their hearts, they suffer in terrible pain. |

| ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀਆ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ |
| muh kaalae koorriaareeaa koorriaar koorro hoe jaavai ||6|| |
| Black are the faces of the false; the false remain just false. ||6|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਰਮ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੇਹਾ ਕੋ ਬੀਜੇ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur dhharathee dhharam hai this vich jaehaa ko beejae thaehaa fal paaeae || |
| The True Guru is the field of Dharma; as one plants the seeds there, so are the fruits obtained. |

| ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| gurasikhee anmrith beejiaa thin anmrith fal har paaeae || |
| The GurSikhs plant ambrosial nectar, and obtain the Lord as their ambrosial fruit. |

| ਓਨਾ ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਓਇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਚੀ ਪੈਨਾਏ ॥ |
| ounaa halath palath mukh oujalae oue har dharageh sachee painaaeae || |
| Their faces are radiant in this world and the next; in the Court of the Lord, they are robed with honor. |

| ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁਆਵਗੀਰ ਸਭਿ ਉਘੜਿ ਆਏ ॥ |
| jaa sathigur saraaf nadhar kar dhaekhai suaavageer sabh ougharr aaeae || |
| When the True Guru, the Tester, observes with His Glance, the selfish ones are all exposed. |

| ਓਇ ਜੇਹਾ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੇਹਾ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਓਇ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੇ ਦਯਿ ਵਜਾਏ ॥ |
| oue jaehaa chithavehi nith thaehaa paaein oue thaeho jaehae dhay vajaaeae || |
| As one thinks, so does he receive, and so does the Lord make him known. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਹੀ ਸਿਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤੈ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਚਲਤ ਸਬਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak dhuhee siree khasam aapae varathai nith kar kar dhaekhai chalath sabaaeae ||1|| |
| O Nanak, the Lord and Master is pervading at both ends; He continually acts, and beholds His own play. ||1|| |

| ਇਕੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗੈ ਸੋ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| eik man eik varathadhaa jith lagai so thhaae paae || |
| The mortal is of one mind - whatever he dedicates it to, in that he is successful. |

| ਕੋਈ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਘਨੇਰੀਆ ਜਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| koee galaa karae ghanaereeaa j ghar vathh hovai saaee khaae || |
| Some talk a lot, but they eat only that which is in their own homes. |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| bin sathigur sojhee naa pavai ahankaar n vichahu jaae || |
| Without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained, and egotism does not depart from within. |

| ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨੋ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਹਥੁ ਤਡਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥ |
| ahankaareeaa no dhukh bhukh hai hathh thaddehi ghar ghar mangaae || |
| Suffering and hunger cling to the egotistical people; they hold out their hands and beg from door to door. |

| ਕੂੜੁ ਠਗੀ ਗੁਝੀ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਮੁਲੰਮਾ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| koorr thagee gujhee naa rehai mulanmaa paaj lehi jaae || |
| Their falsehood and fraud cannot remain concealed; their false appearances fall off in the end. |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥ |
| jis hovai poorab likhiaa this sathigur milai prabh aae || |
| One who has such pre-ordained destiny comes to meet God through the True Guru. |

| ਜਿਉ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੁਵਰਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| jio lohaa paaras bhaetteeai mil sangath suvaran hoe jaae || |
| Just as iron is transmuted into gold by the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, so are people transformed by joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation. |

| ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| jan naanak kae prabh thoo dhhanee jio bhaavai thivai chalaae ||2|| |
| O God, You are the Master of servant Nanak; as it pleases You, You lead him. ||2|| |

| One who serves the Lord with all his heart - the Lord Himself unites him with Himself. |

| ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਸਾਝਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਸਭਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ |
| gun kee saajh thin sio karee sabh avagan sabadh jalaaeae || |
| He enters into a partnership with virtue and merit, and burns off all his demerits with the fire of the Shabad. |

| ਅਉਗਣ ਵਿਕਣਿ ਪਲਰੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| aougan vikan palaree jis dhaehi s sachae paaeae || |
| Demerits are purchased cheap, like straw; he alone gathers merit, who is so blessed by the True Lord. |

| ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ॥ |
| balihaaree gur aapanae jin aougan maett gun paragatteeaaeae || |
| I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has erased my demerits, and revealed my virtuous merits. |

| ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੇ ਕੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਲਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| vaddee vaddiaaee vaddae kee guramukh aalaaeae ||7|| |
| The Gurmukh chants the glorious greatness of the great Lord God. ||7|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| sathigur vich vaddee vaddiaaee jo anadhin har har naam dhhiaavai || |
| Great is the greatness within the True Guru, who meditates night and day on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਮਤ ਸੁਚ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ॥ |
| har har naam ramath such sanjam har naamae hee thripathaavai || |
| The repetition of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is his purity and self-restraint; with the Name of the Lord, He is satisfied. |

| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਰਖ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥ |
| har naam thaan har naam dheebaan har naamo rakh karaavai || |
| The Lord's Name is His power, and the Lord's Name is His Royal Court; the Lord's Name protects Him. |

| ਜੋ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਪੂਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸੋ ਮਨ ਇਛੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| jo chith laae poojae gur moorath so man eishhae fal paavai || |
| One who centers his consciousness and worships the Guru, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires. |
 |
| ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਮਾਰ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ॥ |
| jo nindhaa karae sathigur poorae kee this karathaa maar dhivaavai || |
| But one who slanders the Perfect True Guru, shall be killed and destroyed by the Creator. |

| ਫੇਰਿ ਓਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਓਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਾਵੈ ॥ |
| faer ouh vaelaa ous hathh n aavai ouhu aapanaa beejiaa aapae khaavai || |
| This opportunity shall not come into his hands again; he must eat what he himself has planted. |
 |
| ਨਰਕਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਖੜਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਪਾਇ ਗਲਾਵੈ ॥ |
| narak ghor muhi kaalai kharriaa jio thasakar paae galaavai || |
| He shall be taken to the most horrible hell, with his face blackened like a thief, and a noose around his neck. |
 |
| ਫਿਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਵੈ ਤਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| fir sathigur kee saranee pavai thaa oubarai jaa har har naam dhhiaavai || |
| But if he should again take to the Sanctuary of the True Guru, and meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, then he shall be saved. |

| ਹਰਿ ਬਾਤਾ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| har baathaa aakh sunaaeae naanak har karathae eaevai bhaavai ||1|| |
| Nanak speaks and proclaims the Lord's Story; as it pleases the Creator, so does he speak. ||1|| |

| poorae gur kaa hukam n mannai ouhu manamukh agiaan muthaa bikh maaeiaa || |
| One who does not obey the Hukam, the Command of the Perfect Guru - that self-willed manmukh is plundered by his ignorance and poisoned by Maya. |

| ਓਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕਰਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਅਣਹੋਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਦਯਿ ਓਸ ਦੈ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ous andhar koorr koorro kar bujhai anehodhae jhagarrae dhay ous dhai gal paaeiaa || |
| Within him is falsehood, and he sees everyone else as false; the Lord has tied these useless conflicts around his neck. |
 |
| ਓਹੁ ਗਲ ਫਰੋਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੀ ਓਸ ਦਾ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ouhu gal farosee karae bahuthaeree ous dhaa boliaa kisai n bhaaeiaa || |
| He babbles on and on, but the words he speaks please no one. |
 |
| ਓਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਹੰਢੈ ਜਿਉ ਰੰਨ ਦ+ਹਾਗਣਿ ਓਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਜੋੜੇ ਓਸੁ ਭੀ ਲਛਣੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ouhu ghar ghar handtai jio rann dhuohaagan ous naal muhu jorrae ous bhee lashhan laaeiaa || |
| He wanders from house to house like an abandoned woman; whoever associates with him is stained by the mark of evil as well. |
 |
| ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੁ ਭਲਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੰਚਹੁ ਓਨਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਭੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jo gur gopae aapanaa s bhalaa naahee panchahu oun laahaa mool sabh gavaaeiaa || |
| O chosen people, O self-elect, one who does not publicly affirm his Guru is not a good person; he loses all his profits and capital. |

| ਪਹਿਲਾ ਆਗਮੁ ਨਿਗਮੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| pehilaa aagam nigam naanak aakh sunaaeae poorae gur kaa bachan oupar aaeiaa || |
| People used to chant and recite the Shaastras and the Vedas, O Nanak, but now the Words of the Perfect Guru have come to be the most exalted of all. |
