| Emotional attachment to your family and everything you see is temporary, coming and going. |

| jo bin sachae horath chith laaeidhae sae koorriaar koorraa thin maanaa || |
| Those who attach their consciousness to anything except the True Lord are false, and false is their pride. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਚੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥੧੦॥ |

| O Nanak, meditate on the True Lord; without the True Lord, the ignorant rot away and putrefy to death. ||10|| |

| ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਤ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਦਿਚੈ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| ago dhae sath bhaao n dhichai pishho dhae aakhiaa kanm n aavai || |
| At first, he did not show respect to the Guru; later, he offered excuses, but it is no use. |

| ਅਧ ਵਿਚਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਗਲੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| adhh vich firai manamukh vaechaaraa galee kio sukh paavai || |
| The wretched, self-willed manmukhs wander around and are stuck mid-way; how can they find peace by mere words? |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਕੂੜੀ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ |
| jis andhar preeth nehee sathigur kee s koorree aavai koorree jaavai || |
| Those who have no love for the True Guru within their hearts come with falsehood, and leave with falsehood. |

| ਜੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| jae kirapaa karae maeraa har prabh karathaa thaan sathigur paarabreham nadharee aavai || |
| When my Lord God, the Creator, grants His Grace, then they come to see the True Guru as the Supreme Lord God. |

| ਤਾ ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਾੜਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ |
| thaa apio peevai sabadh gur kaeraa sabh kaarraa andhaesaa bharam chukaavai || |
| Then , they drink in the Nectar, the Word of the Guru's Shabad; all burning, anxiety, and doubts are eliminated. |

| ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| sadhaa anandh rehai dhin raathee jan naanak anadhin har gun gaavai ||1|| |
| They remain in ecstasy forever, day and night; O servant Nanak, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. ||1|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| gur sathigur kaa jo sikh akhaaeae s bhalakae outh har naam dhhiaavai || |
| One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru the True Guru shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name. |

| ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਲਕੇ ਪਰਭਾਤੀ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ॥ |
| oudham karae bhalakae parabhaathee eisanaan karae anmrith sar naavai || |
| Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar. |

| ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਦੋਖ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ |
| oupadhaes guroo har har jap jaapai sabh kilavikh paap dhokh lehi jaavai || |
| Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased. |

| ਫਿਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| fir charrai dhivas gurabaanee gaavai behadhiaa outhadhiaa har naam dhhiaavai || |
| Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name. |

| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥ |
| jis no dhaeiaal hovai maeraa suaamee this gurasikh guroo oupadhaes sunaavai || |
| That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed. |

| ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਧੂੜਿ ਮੰਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ |
| jan naanak dhhoorr mangai this gurasikh kee jo aap japai avareh naam japaavai ||2|| |
| Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2|| |

| Those who meditate on You, O True Lord - they are very rare. |

| ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਖਾਹਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਕਰੋੜੇ ॥ |
| jo man chith eik araadhhadhae thin kee barakath khaahi asankh karorrae || |
| Those who worship and adore the One Lord in their conscious minds - through their generosity, countless millions are fed. |

| ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਸਭ ਧਿਆਇਦੀ ਸੇ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ਜੋ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੋੜੇ ॥ |
| thudhhuno sabh dhhiaaeidhee sae thhaae peae jo saahib lorrae || |
| All meditate on You, but they alone are accepted, who are pleasing to their Lord and Master. |
|
| ਜੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਖਾਦੇ ਪੈਨਦੇ ਸੇ ਮੁਏ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੇ ਕੋੜ੍ਹੇ ॥ |
| jo bin sathigur saevae khaadhae painadhae sae mueae mar janmae korrhae || |
| Those who eat and dress without serving the True Guru die; after death, those wretched lepers are consigned to reincarnation. |

| ਓਇ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਵਿਸੁ ਕਢਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਘੋਲੇ ॥ |
| oue haajar mithaa boladhae baahar vis kadtehi mukh gholae || |
| In His Sublime Presence, they talk sweetly, but behind His back, they exude poison from their mouths. |

| ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਦਯਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ॥੧੧॥ |

| The evil-minded are consigned to separation from the Lord. ||11|| |

| mal jooee bhariaa neelaa kaalaa khidhholarraa thin vaemukh vaemukhai no paaeiaa || |
| The faithless baymukh sent out his faithless servant, wearing a blue-black coat, filled with filth and vermin. |

| ਪਾਸਿ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕੋਈ ਬਹਣਿ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿ ਗੂਹ ਪੜਿ ਸਗਵੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਇ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| paas n dhaeee koee behan jagath mehi gooh parr sagavee mal laae manamukh aaeiaa || |
| No one in the world will sit near him; the self-willed manmukh fell into manure, and returned with even more filth covering him. |

| ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚੁਗਲੀ ਨੋ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਓਥੈ ਭੀ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਦੁਹਾ ਵੇਮੁਖਾ ਦਾ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥ |
| paraaee jo nindhaa chugalee no vaemukh kar kai bhaejiaa outhhai bhee muhu kaalaa dhuhaa vaemukhaa dhaa karaaeiaa || |
| The faithless baymukh was sent to slander and back-bite others, but when he went there, the faces of both he and his faithless master were blackened instead. |

| ਤੜ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਸਭਤੁ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਾਈ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਸਣੈ ਨਫਰੈ ਪਉਲੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਫਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਉਠਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| tharr suniaa sabhath jagath vich bhaaee vaemukh sanai nafarai poulee poudhee faavaa hoe kai outh ghar aaeiaa || |
| It was immediately heard throughout the whole world, O Siblings of Destiny, that this faithless man, along with his servant, was kicked and beaten with shoes; in humiliation, they got up and returned to their homes. |

| ਅਗੈ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਕੁੜਮੀ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਰਲਣਾ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਭਤੀਜਂੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਣਿ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| agai sangathee kurramee vaemukh ralanaa n milai thaa vahuttee bhatheejanaee fir aan ghar paaeiaa || |
| The faithless baymukh was not allowed to mingle with others; his wife and niece then brought him home to lie down. |
|
| ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਏ ਨਿਤ ਭੁਖਾ ਕੂਕੇ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥ |
| halath palath dhovai geae nith bhukhaa kookae thihaaeiaa || |
| He has lost both this world and the next; he cries out continually, in hunger and thirst. |
|
| ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਿਆਉ ਸਚੁ ਬਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhhan dhhan suaamee karathaa purakh hai jin niaao sach behi aap karaaeiaa || |
| Blessed, blessed is the Creator, the Primal Being, our Lord and Master; He Himself sits and dispenses true justice. |
|
| ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਚੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jo nindhaa karae sathigur poorae kee so saachai maar pachaaeiaa || |
| One who slanders the Perfect True Guru is punished and destroyed by the True Lord. |
|
| ਏਹੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| eaehu akhar thin aakhiaa jin jagath sabh oupaaeiaa ||1|| |
| This Word is spoken by the One who created the whole universe. ||1|| |

| saahib jis kaa nangaa bhukhaa hovai this dhaa nafar kithhahu raj khaaeae || |
| One who has a poor beggar for a master - how can he be well-fed? |

| ਜਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਫਰੈ ਹਥਿ ਆਵੈ ਅਣਹੋਦੀ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| j saahib kai ghar vathh hovai s nafarai hathh aavai anehodhee kithhahu paaeae || |
| If there is something in his master's house, he can get it; but how can he get what is not there? |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਸਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਉਖੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| jis dhee saevaa keethee fir laekhaa mangeeai saa saevaa aoukhee hoee || |
| Serving him, who will be called to answer for his account? That service is painful and useless. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak saevaa karahu har gur safal dharasan kee fir laekhaa mangai n koee ||2|| |
| O Nanak, serve the Guru, the Lord Incarnate; the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is profitable, and in the end, you shall not be called to account. ||2|| |

| O Nanak, the Saints consider, and the four Vedas proclaim, |

| ਭਗਤ ਮੁਖੈ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸੇ ਵਚਨ ਹੋਵੰਦੇ ॥ |
| bhagath mukhai thae boladhae sae vachan hovandhae || |
| that whatever the Lord's devotees utter with their mouths, shall come to pass. |

| ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪਹਾਰਾ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣੰਦੇ ॥ |
| pragatt pehaaraa jaapadhaa sabh lok sunandhae || |
| He is manifest in His cosmic workshop. All people hear of this. |
|
| ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਰ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਲਿ ਖਹੰਦੇ ॥ |
| sukh n paaein mugadhh nar santh naal khehandhae || |
| The stubborn men who fight with the Saints shall never find peace. |
|
| ਓਇ ਲੋਚਨਿ ਓਨਾ ਗੁਣੈ ਨੋ ਓਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸੜੰਦੇ ॥ |
| oue lochan ounaa gunai no oue ahankaar sarrandhae || |
| The Saints seek to bless them with virtue, but they only burn in their egos. |
|
| ਓਇ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਜਾ ਭਾਗ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੰਦੇ ॥ |
| oue vichaarae kiaa karehi jaa bhaag dhhur mandhae || |
| What can those wretched ones do, since, from the very beginning, their destiny is cursed with evil. |
|
| ਜੋ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਸੰਦੇ ॥ |
| jo maarae thin paarabreham sae kisai n sandhae || |
| Those who are struck down by the Supreme Lord God are of no use to anyone. |
|
| ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਆਇ ਪਚੰਦੇ ॥ |
| vair karehi niravair naal dhharam niaae pachandhae || |
| Those who hate the One who has no hatred - according to the true justice of Dharma, they shall perish. |
|
| ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੰਤਿ ਸਰਾਪਿਆ ਸੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭਵੰਦੇ ॥ |
| jo jo santh saraapiaa sae firehi bhavandhae || |
| Those who are cursed by the Saints will continue wandering aimlessly. |
|
| ਪੇਡੁ ਮੁੰਢਾਹੂੰ ਕਟਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਡਾਲ ਸੁਕੰਦੇ ॥੧੨॥ |
| paedd mundtaahoon kattiaa this ddaal sukandhae ||12|| |
| When the tree is cut off at its roots, the branches wither and die. ||12|| |
