| ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ |
| lakh saasath samajhaavanee lakh panddith parrehi puraan || |
| Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him; |

| ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥ |
| jaan path laekhai naa pavai thaan sabhae kuparavaan ||3|| |
| but, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3|| |

| ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ |
| sach naam path oopajai karam naam karathaar || |
| Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator. |

| ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥ |
| ahinis hiradhai jae vasai naanak nadharee paar ||4||1||31|| |
| If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31|| |

| The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it. |

| ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥ |
| oun chaanan ouhu sokhiaa chookaa jam sio mael ||1|| |
| Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |

| ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ |

| O people, do not make fun of me. |

| Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ |
| pindd pathal maeree kaeso kiriaa sach naam karathaar || |
| The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony. |

| ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| aithhai outhhai aagai paashhai eaehu maeraa aadhhaar ||2|| |
| Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2|| |

| ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥ |
| gang banaaras sifath thumaaree naavai aatham raao || |
| The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there. |

| ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥ |
| sachaa naavan thaan thheeai jaan ahinis laagai bhaao ||3|| |
| That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3|| |

| ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| eik lokee hor shhamishharee braahaman vatt pindd khaae || |
| The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them! |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥ |
| naanak pindd bakhasees kaa kabehoon nikhoottas naahi ||4||2||32|| |
| O Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32|| |

| The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1|| |

| ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥ |

| For Your sake, O Lord Master, they are imbued with love. |

| Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause|| |

| Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands. |

| peer paekaanbar saalik saadhik shhoddee dhuneeaa thhaae peae ||2|| |
| The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2|| |

| ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥ |
| saadh sehaj sukh ras kas thajeealae kaaparr shhoddae chamarr leeeae || |
| Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins. |

| ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥ |
| dhukheeeae dharadhavandh dhar thaerai naam rathae dharavaes bheae ||3|| |
| Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3|| |

| ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥ |
| khalarree khaparee lakarree chamarree sikhaa sooth dhhothee keenhee || |
| Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths. |

| My soul does not stay held by the Merciful Lord. |

| ਲੋਭੀ ਕਪਟੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਧਿਕ ਲਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| lobhee kapattee paapee paakhanddee maaeiaa adhhik lagai ||1|| rehaao || |
| It is greedy, deceitful, sinful and hypocritical, and totally attached to Maya. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਫੂਲ ਮਾਲਾ ਗਲਿ ਪਹਿਰਉਗੀ ਹਾਰੋ ॥ |
| fool maalaa gal pehirougee haaro || |
| I will decorate my neck with garlands of flowers. |

| ਮਿਲੈਗਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਤਬ ਕਰਉਗੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੋ ॥੨॥ |
| milaigaa preetham thab karougee seegaaro ||2|| |
| When I meet my Beloved, then I will put on my decorations. ||2|| |

| ਪੰਚ ਸਖੀ ਹਮ ਏਕੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥ |

| I have five companions and one Spouse. |
 |
| ਪੇਡਿ ਲਗੀ ਹੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਚਾਲਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੩॥ |
| paedd lagee hai jeearraa chaalanehaaro ||3|| |
| It is ordained from the very beginning, that the soul must ultimately depart. ||3|| |

| ਪੰਚ ਸਖੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੇਹਾ ॥ |

| The five companions will lament together. |

| ਸਾਹੁ ਪਜੂਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਹਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੪॥ |

| When the soul is trapped, prays Nanak, it is called to account. ||4||1||34|| |

| If the pearl of the mind is strung like a jewel on the thread of the breath, |

| ਖਿਮਾ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਤਨਿ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਰਾਵੈ ਲਾਲ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
| khimaa seegaar kaaman than pehirai raavai laal piaaree ||1|| |
| and the soul-bride adorns her body with compassion, then the Beloved Lord will enjoy His lovely bride. ||1|| |

| ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਣਿ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਮੋਹੀ ॥ |
| laal bahu gun kaaman mohee || |
| O my Love, I am fascinated by Your many glories; |

| ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਅਵਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| Your Glorious Virtues are not found in any other. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਲੇ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਦਾਮੋਦਰੁ ਦੰਤੁ ਲੇਈ ॥ |
| har har haar kanth lae pehirai dhaamodhar dhanth laeee || |
| If the bride wears the garland of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, around her neck, and if she uses the toothbrush of the Lord; |

| ਕਰ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੰਗਨ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਧਰੇਈ ॥੨॥ |
| kar kar karathaa kangan pehirai ein bidhh chith dhharaeee ||2|| |
| and if she fashions and wears the bracelet of the Creator Lord around her wrist, then she shall hold her consciousness steady. ||2|| |

| ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨੁ ਕਰ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਪਟੁ ਲੇਈ ॥ |
| madhhusoodhan kar mundharee pehirai paramaesar patt laeee || |
| She should make the Lord, the Slayer of demons, her ring, and take the Transcendent Lord as her silken clothes. |

| ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੜੀ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸ੍ਰੀਰੰਗੁ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਦੇਈ ॥੩॥ |
| dhheeraj dhharree bandhhaavai kaaman sreerang suramaa dhaeee ||3|| |
| The soul-bride should weave patience into the braids of her hair, and apply the lotion of the Lord, the Great Lover. ||3|| |

| ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਜੇ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਜਾਲੇ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੇਜ ਕਰੇਈ ॥ |
| man mandhar jae dheepak jaalae kaaeiaa saej karaeee || |
| If she lights the lamp in the mansion of her mind, and makes her body the bed of the Lord, |

| ਗਿਆਨ ਰਾਉ ਜਬ ਸੇਜੈ ਆਵੈ ਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋਗੁ ਕਰੇਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੫॥ |
| giaan raao jab saejai aavai th naanak bhog karaeee ||4||1||35|| |
| then, when the King of spiritual wisdom comes to her bed, He shall take her, and enjoy her. ||4||1||35|| |
