| keethaa hovai karae karaaeiaa this kiaa keheeai bhaaee || |
| The created being acts as he is made to act; what can be said to him, O Siblings of Destiny? |

| ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| jo kishh karanaa so kar rehiaa keethae kiaa chathuraaee ||1|| |
| Whatever the Lord is to do, He is doing; what cleverness could be used to affect Him? ||1|| |
|
| ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਲਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ |
| thaeraa hukam bhalaa thudhh bhaavai || |
| The Order of Your Will is so sweet, O Lord; this is pleasing to You. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| naanak thaa ko milai vaddaaee saachae naam samaavai ||1|| rehaao || |
| O Nanak, he alone is honored with greatness, who is absorbed in the True Name. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| kirath paeiaa paravaanaa likhiaa baahurr hukam n hoee || |
| The deeds are done according to pre-ordained destiny; no one can turn back this Order. |

| ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤੈਸਾ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥ |
| jaisaa likhiaa thaisaa parriaa maett n sakai koee ||2|| |
| As it is written, so it comes to pass; no one can erase it. ||2|| |
|
| ਜੇ ਕੋ ਦਰਗਹ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਉ ਪਵੈ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ॥ |
| jae ko dharageh bahuthaa bolai naao pavai baajaaree || |
| He who talks on and on in the Lord's Court is known as a joker. |
|
| ਸਤਰੰਜ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਚੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥ |
| satharanj baajee pakai naahee kachee aavai saaree ||3|| |
| He is not successful in the game of chess, and his chessmen do not reach their goal. ||3|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਕੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਮੰਦਾ ॥ |
| naa ko parriaa panddith beenaa naa ko moorakh mandhaa || |
| By himself, no one is literate, learned or wise; no one is ignorant or evil. |

| ਬੰਦੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕਹੀਐ ਬੰਦਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੬॥ |
| bandhee andhar sifath karaaeae thaa ko keheeai bandhaa ||4||2||36|| |
| When, as a slave, one praises the Lord, only then is he known as a human being. ||4||2||36|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਹਢਾਵਉ ॥ |
| gur kaa sabadh manai mehi mundhraa khinthhaa khimaa hadtaavo || |
| Let the Word of the Guru's Shabad be the ear-rings in your mind, and wear the patched coat of tolerance. |

| ਬਾਬਾ ਜੁਗਤਾ ਜੀਉ ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗ ਜੋਗੀ ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੰ ॥ |
| baabaa jugathaa jeeo jugeh jug jogee param thanth mehi jogan || |
| O father, the soul which is united in union as a Yogi, remains united in the supreme essence throughout the ages. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਿਆਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਸ ਭੋਗੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| anmrith naam niranjan paaeiaa giaan kaaeiaa ras bhogan ||1|| rehaao || |
| One who has obtained the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Immaculate Lord - his body enjoys the pleasure of spiritual wisdom. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਿਵ ਨਗਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਸਣਿ ਬੈਸਉ ਕਲਪ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਾਦੰ ॥ |
| siv nagaree mehi aasan baiso kalap thiaagee baadhan || |
| In the Lord's City, he sits in his Yogic posture, and he forsakes his desires and conflicts. |

| ਸਿੰਙੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਦੰ ॥੨॥ |
| sinn(g)ee sabadh sadhaa dhhun sohai ahinis poorai naadhan ||2|| |
| The sound of the horn ever rings out its beautiful melody, and day and night, he is filled with the sound current of the Naad. ||2|| |

| ਪਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਮਤਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਬਿਭੂਤੰ ॥ |
| path veechaar giaan math ddanddaa varathamaan bibhoothan || |
| My cup is reflective meditation, and spiritual wisdom is my walking stick; to dwell in the Lord's Presence is the ashes I apply to my body. |

| ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਅਤੀਤੰ ॥੩॥ |
| har keerath reharaas hamaaree guramukh panthh atheethan ||3|| |
| The Praise of the Lord is my occupation; and to live as Gurmukh is my pure religion. ||3|| |

| ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਸੰਮਿਆ ਨਾਨਾ ਵਰਨ ਅਨੇਕੰ ॥ |
| sagalee joth hamaaree sanmiaa naanaa varan anaekan || |
| My arm-rest is to see the Lord's Light in all, although their forms and colors are so numerous. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲਿਵ ਏਕੰ ॥੪॥੩॥੩੭॥ |

| Says Nanak, listen, O Bharthari Yogi: love only the Supreme Lord God. ||4||3||37|| |

| ਗੁੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ |
| gurr kar giaan dhhiaan kar dhhaavai kar karanee kas paaeeai || |
| Make spiritual wisdom your molasses, and meditation your scented flowers; let good deeds be the herbs. |

| ਭਾਠੀ ਭਵਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਾ ਪੋਚਾ ਇਤੁ ਰਸਿ ਅਮਿਉ ਚੁਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ |
| bhaathee bhavan praem kaa pochaa eith ras amio chuaaeeai ||1|| |
| Let devotional faith be the distilling fire, and your love the ceramic cup. Thus the sweet nectar of life is distilled. ||1|| |

| ਬਾਬਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸਹਜ ਰੰਗ ਰਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥ |
| baabaa man mathavaaro naam ras peevai sehaj rang rach rehiaa || |
| O Baba, the mind is intoxicated with the Naam, drinking in its Nectar. It remains absorbed in the Lord's Love. |

| ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਬਨੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| ahinis banee praem liv laagee sabadh anaahadh gehiaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Night and day, remaining attached to the Love of the Lord, the celestial music of the Shabad resounds. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪੀਆਏ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ |
| pooraa saach piaalaa sehajae thisehi peeaaeae jaa ko nadhar karae || |
| The Perfect Lord naturally gives the cup of Truth, to the one upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਦਿ ਛੂਛੈ ਭਾਉ ਧਰੇ ॥੨॥ |
| anmrith kaa vaapaaree hovai kiaa madh shhooshhai bhaao dhharae ||2|| |
| One who trades in this Nectar - how could he ever love the wine of the world? ||2|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੀਵਤ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| gur kee saakhee anmrith baanee peevath hee paravaan bhaeiaa || |
| The Teachings of the Guru, the Ambrosial Bani - drinking them in, one becomes acceptable and renowned. |

| ਦਰ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੈ ਕਰੈ ਕਿਆ ॥੩॥ |
| dhar dharasan kaa preetham hovai mukath baikunthai karai kiaa ||3|| |
| Unto the one who loves the Lord's Court, and the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, of what use is liberation or paradise? ||3|| |
|
| ਸਿਫਤੀ ਰਤਾ ਸਦ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੈ ॥ |
| sifathee rathaa sadh bairaagee jooai janam n haarai || |
| Imbued with the Lord's Praises, one is forever a Bairaagee, a renunciate, and one's life is not lost in the gamble. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਖੀਵਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੩੮॥ |

| Says Nanak, listen, O Bharthari Yogi: drink in the intoxicating nectar of the Lord. ||4||4||38|| |

| khuraasaan khasamaanaa keeaa hindhusathaan ddaraaeiaa || |
| Having attacked Khuraasaan, Baabar terrified Hindustan. |
|
| ਆਪੈ ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ |
| aapai dhos n dhaeee karathaa jam kar mugal charraaeiaa || |
| The Creator Himself does not take the blame, but has sent the Mugal as the messenger of death. |

| ਏਤੀ ਮਾਰ ਪਈ ਕਰਲਾਣੇ ਤੈਂ ਕੀ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| eaethee maar pee karalaanae thain kee dharadh n aaeiaa ||1|| |
| There was so much slaughter that the people screamed. Didn't You feel compassion, Lord? ||1|| |
|
| ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| karathaa thoon sabhanaa kaa soee || |
| O Creator Lord, You are the Master of all. |
|
| ਜੇ ਸਕਤਾ ਸਕਤੇ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jae sakathaa sakathae ko maarae thaa man ros n hoee ||1|| rehaao || |
| If some powerful man strikes out against another man, then no one feels any grief in their mind. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਕਤਾ ਸੀਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਪੈ ਵਗੈ ਖਸਮੈ ਸਾ ਪੁਰਸਾਈ ॥ |
| sakathaa seehu maarae pai vagai khasamai saa purasaaee || |
| But if a powerful tiger attacks a flock of sheep and kills them, then its master must answer for it. |

| ਰਤਨ ਵਿਗਾੜਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਕੁਤਂੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥ |
| rathan vigaarr vigoeae kuthanaee mueiaa saar n kaaee || |
| This priceless country has been laid waste and defiled by dogs, and no one pays any attention to the dead. |

| ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥ |
| aapae jorr vishhorrae aapae vaekh thaeree vaddiaaee ||2|| |
| You Yourself unite, and You Yourself separate; I gaze upon Your Glorious Greatness. ||2|| |
|
| ਜੇ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਏ ਵਡਾ ਸਾਦ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥ |
| jae ko naao dhharaaeae vaddaa saadh karae man bhaanae || |
| One may give himself a great name, and revel in the pleasures of the mind, |
|
| ਖਸਮੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਕੀੜਾ ਆਵੈ ਜੇਤੇ ਚੁਗੈ ਦਾਣੇ ॥ |
| khasamai nadharee keerraa aavai jaethae chugai dhaanae || |
| but in the Eyes of the Lord and Master, he is just a worm, for all the corn that he eats. |

| ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥੩॥੫॥੩੯॥ |
| mar mar jeevai thaa kishh paaeae naanak naam vakhaanae ||3||5||39|| |
| Only one who dies to his ego while yet alive, obtains the blessings, O Nanak, by chanting the Lord's Name. ||3||5||39|| |

| The Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan is obtained by great good fortune. |

| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadh sachai bairaag || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, true detachment is obtained. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ |
| gur kaa dharasan agam apaaraa ||1|| |
| but the Guru's system is profound and unequalled. ||1|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| gur kai dharasan mukath gath hoe || |
| The Guru's system is the way to liberation. |
