| The world is polluted with the filth of egotism, suffering in pain. This filth sticks to them because of their love of duality. |

| This filth of egotism cannot be washed away, even by taking cleansing baths at hundreds of sacred shrines. |

| ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੂਣੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਇ ॥ |
| bahu bidhh karam kamaavadhae dhoonee mal laagee aae || |
| Performing all sorts of rituals, people are smeared with twice as much filth. |

| ਪੜਿਐ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |

| This filth is not removed by studying. Go ahead, and ask the wise ones. ||1|| |

| O my mind, coming to the Sanctuary of the Guru, you shall become immaculate and pure. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੀ ਧੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| The self-willed manmukhs have grown weary of chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, but their filth cannot be removed. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| With a polluted mind, devotional service cannot be performed, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, cannot be obtained. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੈਲੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਮੁਏ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ |
| manamukh mailae mailae mueae jaasan path gavaae || |
| The filthy, self-willed manmukhs die in filth, and they depart in disgrace. |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee man vasai mal houmai jaae samaae || |
| By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to abide in the mind, and the filth of egotism is dispelled. |

| ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੇਰੈ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਬਾਲੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਤਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| jio andhhaerai dheepak baaleeai thio gur giaan agiaan thajaae ||2|| |
| Like a lamp lit in the darkness, the spiritual wisdom of the Guru dispels ignorance. ||2|| |

| ਹਮ ਕੀਆ ਹਮ ਕਰਹਗੇ ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥ |
| ham keeaa ham karehagae ham moorakh gaavaar || |
| "I have done this, and I will do that"-I am an idiotic fool for saying this! |

| ਕਰਣੈ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| karanai vaalaa visariaa dhoojai bhaae piaar || |
| I have forgotten the Doer of all; I am caught in the love of duality. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ |

| There is no pain as great as the pain of Maya; it drives people to wander all around the world, until they become exhausted. |

| I am a sacrifice to those who meet and merge with the Lord. |

| eae man bhagathee rathiaa sach baanee nij thhaao || |
| This mind is attuned to devotional worship; through the True Word of Gurbani, it finds its own home. |

| ਮਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਚੇ ਗਾਉ ॥ |

| With the mind so imbued, and the tongue imbued as well, sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. |

| Within my mind and body is the intense pain of separation; how can my Beloved come to meet me in my home? |

| ਜਾ ਦੇਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| jaa dhaekhaa prabh aapanaa prabh dhaekhiai dhukh jaae || |
| When I see my God, seeing God Himself, my pain is taken away. |

| ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਾ ਤਿਨ ਸਜਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ |

| I go and ask my friends, ""How can I meet and merge with God?""||1|| |

| O my True Guru, without You I have no other at all. |

| The True Guru is the Giver of the Name of the Lord. God Himself causes us to meet Him. |

| The True Guru understands the Lord God. There is no other as Great as the Guru. |

| ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਢਹਿ ਪਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| ho gur saranaaee dtehi pavaa kar dhaeiaa maelae prabh soe ||2|| |
| I have come and collapsed in the Guru's Sanctuary. In His Kindness, He has united me with God. ||2|| |

| ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਰੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| sehas siaanap kar rehae man korai rang n hoe || |
| Thousands of clever mental tricks have been tried, but still, the raw and undisciplined mind does not absorb the Color of the Lord's Love. |

| ਕੂੜਿ ਕਪਟਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਖਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
| koorr kapatt kinai n paaeiou jo beejai khaavai soe ||3|| |
| By falsehood and deception, none have found Him. Whatever you plant, you shall eat. ||3|| |

| ਸਭਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ |
| sabhanaa thaeree aas prabh sabh jeea thaerae thoon raas || |
| O God, You are the Hope of all. All beings are Yours; You are the Wealth of all. |

| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਧਹੁ ਖਾਲੀ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਦਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥ |
| prabh thudhhahu khaalee ko nehee dhar guramukhaa no saabaas || |
| O God, none return from You empty-handed; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are praised and acclaimed. |

| In the terrifying world-ocean of poison, people are drowning-please lift them up and save them! This is servant Nanak's humble prayer. ||4||1||65|| |

| If I meet the Gurmukh, my Spiritual Friend, he will show me God, the Treasure of Excellence. |

| The Naam is a Priceless Jewel; it is with the Perfect True Guru. |

| When one is enjoined to serve the True Guru, He brings out this Jewel and bestows this enlightenment. |

| dhhann vaddabhaagee vadd bhaageeaa jo aae milae gur paas ||2|| |
| Blessed, and most fortunate of the very fortunate, are those who come to meet the Guru. ||2|| |

| ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ |
| jinaa sathigur purakh n bhaettiou sae bhaageheen vas kaal || |
| Those who have not met the Primal Being, the True Guru, are most unfortunate, and are subject to death. |

| ਓਇ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ॥ |

| They wander in reincarnation over and over again, as the most disgusting maggots in manure. |

| ਓਨਾ ਪਾਸਿ ਦੁਆਸਿ ਨ ਭਿਟੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥੩॥ |
| ounaa paas dhuaas n bhitteeai jin anthar krodhh chanddaal ||3|| |
| Do not meet with, or even approach those people, whose hearts are filled with horrible anger. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| sathigur purakh anmrith sar vaddabhaagee naavehi aae || |
| The True Guru, the Primal Being, is the Pool of Ambrosial Nectar. The very fortunate ones come to bathe in it. |

| ਉਨ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥ |

| The filth of many incarnations is washed away, and the Immaculate Naam is implanted within. |
