| The whole world is asleep in doubt; it is blinded by worldly entanglements. |

| ਕੋਊ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ॥੧॥ |

| How rare is that humble servant of the Lord who is awake and aware. ||1|| |

| ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥ |
| mehaa mohanee magan pria preeth praan || |
| The mortal is intoxicated with the great enticement of Maya, which is dearer to him than life. |

| How rare is the one who renounces it. ||2|| |

| The Lord's Lotus Feet are incomparably beautiful; so is the Mantra of the Saint. |

| How rare is that holy person who is attached to them. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ |
| naanak saadhhoo sang jaagae giaan rang || |
| O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the love of divine knowledge is awakened; |

| Whatever pleases You is acceptable to me; that alone brings peace and ease to my mind. |

| ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ |
| karan kaaran samarathh apaaraa avar naahee rae koee ||1|| |
| You are the Doer, the Cause of causes, All-powerful and Infinite; there is none other than You. ||1|| |

| ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਰਸਕਿ ਰਸਕਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥ |

| Your humble servants sing Your Glorious Praises with enthusiasm and love. |

| ਮਸਲਤਿ ਮਤਾ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਰਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| masalath mathaa siaanap jan kee jo thoon karehi karaavehi ||1|| rehaao || |
| That alone is good advice, wisdom and cleverness for Your humble servant, which You do or cause to be done. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| anmrith naam thumaaraa piaarae saadhhasang ras paaeiaa || |
| Your Name is Ambrosial Nectar, O Beloved Lord; in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have obtained its sublime essence. |

| ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| thripath aghaae saeee jan poorae sukh nidhhaan har gaaeiaa ||2|| |
| Those humble beings are satisfied and fulfilled, singing the Praises of the Lord, the treasure of peace. ||2|| |

| ਜਾ ਕਉ ਟੇਕ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥ |
| jaa ko ttaek thumhaaree suaamee thaa ko naahee chinthaa || |
| One who has Your Support, O Lord Master, is not afflicted by anxiety. |

| ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦਇਆ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇ ਸਾਹ ਭਲੇ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥੩॥ |
| jaa ko dhaeiaa thumaaree hoee sae saah bhalae bhagavanthaa ||3|| |
| One who is blessed by Your Kind Mercy, is the best, the most fortunate king. ||3|| |
|
| ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਜਬ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| bharam moh dhhroh sabh nikasae jab kaa dharasan paaeiaa || |
| Doubt, attachment, and deceit have all disappeared, since I obtained the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. |

| ਵਰਤਣਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੪੦॥ |

| Dealing in the Naam, O Nanak, we become truthful, and in the Love of the Lord's Name, we are absorbed. ||4||1 | 40|| |

| ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਪਰਾਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| janam janam kee mal dhhovai paraaee aapanaa keethaa paavai || |
| He washes off the filth of other peoples' incarnations, but he obtains the rewards of his own actions. |
|
| ਈਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਢੋਈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਪਚਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| eehaa sukh nehee dharageh dtoee jam pur jaae pachaavai ||1|| |
| He has no peace in this world, and he has no place in the Court of the Lord. In the City of Death, he is tortured. ||1|| |
|
| ਨਿੰਦਕਿ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| nindhak ahilaa janam gavaaeiaa || |
| The slanderer loses his life in vain. |
|
| ਪਹੁਚਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਾਤੈ ਆਗੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| He cannot succeed in anything, and in the world hereafter, he finds no place at all. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ |
| kirath paeiaa nindhak bapurae kaa kiaa ouhu karai bichaaraa || |
| Such is the fate of the wretched slanderer - what can the poor creature do? |

| ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥ |
| nindhak kee gath kathehoon naahee khasamai eaevai bhaanaa || |
| The slanderer shall never attain emancipation; this is the Will of the Lord and Master. |

| ਜੋ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਤਿਉ ਸੰਤਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨਾ ॥੩॥ |
| jo jo nindh karae santhan kee thio santhan sukh maanaa ||3|| |
| The more the Saints are slandered, the more they dwell in peace. ||3|| |

| ਸੰਤਾ ਟੇਕ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਾ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ |
| santhaa ttaek thumaaree suaamee thoon santhan kaa sehaaee || |
| The Saints have Your Support, O Lord and Master; You are the Saints' Help and Support. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਦੀਏ ਰੁੜਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੧॥ |
| kahu naanak santh har raakhae nindhak dheeeae rurraaee ||4||2||41|| |
| Says Nanak, the Saints are saved by the Lord; the slanderers are drowned in the deep. ||4||2||41|| |

| baahar dhhoe anthar man mailaa dhue thour apunae khoeae || |
| He washes outwardly, but within, his mind is filthy; thus he loses his place in both worlds. |

| ਈਹਾ ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਮੁਸਿ ਮੁਸਿ ਰੋਏ ॥੧॥ |
| eehaa kaam krodhh mohi viaapiaa aagai mus mus roeae ||1|| |
| Here, he is engrossed in sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment; hereafter, he shall sigh and weep. ||1|| |
|
| ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਹੋਰਾ ॥ |

| The way to vibrate and meditate on the Lord of the Universe is different. |

| ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਰਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੁਨਈ ਡੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| varamee maaree saap n maree naam n sunee ddoraa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Destroying the snake-hole, the snake is not killed; the deaf person does not hear the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kee kirath shhodd gavaaee bhagathee saar n jaanai || |
| He renounces the affairs of Maya, but he does not appreciate the value of devotional worship. |

| ਬੇਦ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਕਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਤੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੨॥ |
| baedh saasathr ko tharakan laagaa thath jog n pashhaanai ||2|| |
| He finds fault with the Vedas and the Shaastras, and does not know the essence of Yoga. ||2|| |
|
| ਉਘਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਜੈਸਾ ਖੋਟਾ ਢਬੂਆ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫਾ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| oughar gaeiaa jaisaa khottaa dtabooaa nadhar saraafaa aaeiaa || |
| He stands exposed, like a counterfeit coin, when inspected by the Lord, the Assayer. |

| ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਉਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| antharajaamee sabh kishh jaanai ous thae kehaa shhapaaeiaa ||3|| |
| The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything; how can we hide anything from Him? ||3|| |
|
| ਕੂੜਿ ਕਪਟਿ ਬੰਚਿ ਨਿੰਮੁਨੀਆਦਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਤਕਾਲੇ ॥ |
| koorr kapatt banch ninmuneeaadhaa binas gaeiaa thathakaalae || |
| Through falsehood, fraud and deceit, the mortal collapses in an instant - he has no foundation at all. |

| ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੨॥ |

| Truly, truly, truly, Nanak speaks; look within your own heart, and realize this. ||4||3||42|| |

| Making the effort, the mind becomes pure; in this dance, the self is silenced. |

| ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਲੇ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
| panch janaa lae vasagath raakhai man mehi eaekankaarae ||1|| |
| The five passions are kept under control, and the One Lord dwells in the mind. ||1|| |

| ਤੇਰਾ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ |
