| vin gur sabadhai janam k laekhehi ||5|| |
| Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, what use is human life? ||5|| |

| ਦੇਖਿ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦਿ ॥ |
| dhaekh acharaj rehae bisamaadh || |
| Beholding the Marvellous Lord, I am wonder-struck and astonished. |

| ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਧਿ ॥ |
| ghatt ghatt sur nar sehaj samaadhh || |
| In each and every heart, of the angels and holy men, He dwells in celestial Samaadhi. |

| ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ |
| bharipur dhhaar rehae man maahee || |
| I have enshrined the All-pervading Lord within my mind. |
 |
| ਤੁਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥ |
| thum samasar avar ko naahee ||6|| |
| There is no one else equal to You. ||6|| |

| ਜਾ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ |
| jaa kee bhagath haeth mukh naam || |
| For the sake of devotional worship, we chant Your Name. |

| ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ॥ |
| santh bhagath kee sangath raam || |
| The Lord's devotees dwell in the Society of the Saints. |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ |
| bandhhan thorae sehaj dhhiaan || |
| Breaking his bonds, one comes to meditate on the Lord. |
 |
| ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੭॥ |
| shhoottai guramukh har gur giaan ||7|| |
| The Gurmukhs are emancipated, by the Guru-given knowledge of the Lord. ||7|| |

| ਨਾ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੂਖੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
| naa jamadhooth dhookh this laagai || |
| The Messenger of Death cannot touch him with pain; |
 |
| ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਗੈ ॥ |
| jo jan raam naam liv jaagai || |
| the Lord's humble servant remains awake to the Love of the Naam. |

| ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ |
| bhagath vashhal bhagathaa har sang || |
| The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He dwells with His devotees. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੮॥੯॥ |

| O Nanak, they are liberated, through the Love of the Lord. ||8||9|| |

| One who serves the Guru, knows his Lord and Master. |

| ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ |
| dhookh mittai sach sabadh pashhaanai ||1|| |
| His pains are erased, and he realizes the True Word of the Shabad. ||1|| |

| Meditate on the Lord, O my friends and companions. |

| People are entangled with mother, father and the world. |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਸੁਤ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ |
| bandhhan suth kanniaa ar naar ||2|| |
| They are entangled with sons, daughters and spouses. ||2|| |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਹਉ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| bandhhan karam dhharam ho keeaa || |
| They are entangled with religious rituals, and religious faith, acting in ego. |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੀਆ ॥੩॥ |
| bandhhan puth kalath man beeaa ||3|| |
| They are entangled with sons, wives and others in their minds. ||3|| |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਕਿਰਖੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਰਸਾਨ ॥ |
| bandhhan kirakhee karehi kirasaan || |
| The farmers are entangled by farming. |
 |
| ਹਉਮੈ ਡੰਨੁ ਸਹੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨ ॥੪॥ |
| houmai ddann sehai raajaa mangai dhaan ||4|| |
| People suffer punishment in ego, and the Lord King exacts the penalty from them. ||4|| |

| ਬੰਧਨ ਸਉਦਾ ਅਣਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ |
| bandhhan soudhaa anaveechaaree || |
| They are entangled in trade without contemplation. |
 |
| ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੫॥ |
| thipath naahee maaeiaa moh pasaaree ||5|| |
| They are not satisfied by attachment to the expanse of Maya. ||5|| |

| ਬੰਧਨ ਸਾਹ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| bandhhan saah sanchehi dhhan jaae || |
| They are entangled with that wealth, amassed by bankers. |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥੬॥ |
| bin har bhagath n pavee thhaae ||6|| |
| Without devotion to the Lord, they do not become acceptable. ||6|| |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥ |
| bandhhan baedh baadh ahankaar || |
| They are entangled with the Vedas, religious discussions and egotism. |
 |
| ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੭॥ |
| bandhhan binasai moh vikaar ||7|| |
| They are entangled, and perish in attachment and corruption. ||7|| |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ |

| Those heads adorned with braided hair, with their parts painted with vermillion |

| ਸੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਤੀ ਮੁੰਨੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਗਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਵੈ ਧੂੜਿ ॥ |
| sae sir kaathee munneeanih gal vich aavai dhhoorr || |
| those heads were shaved with scissors, and their throats were choked with dust. |

| ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਦੀਆ ਹੁਣਿ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| mehalaa andhar hodheeaa hun behan n milanih hadhoor ||1|| |
| They lived in palatial mansions, but now, they cannot even sit near the palaces. ||1|| |

| Hail to You, O Father Lord, Hail to You! |

| jadhahu seeaa veeaaheeaa laarrae sohan paas || |
| When they were married, their husbands looked so handsome beside them. |

| ਹੀਡੋਲੀ ਚੜਿ ਆਈਆ ਦੰਦ ਖੰਡ ਕੀਤੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ |
| heeddolee charr aaeeaa dhandh khandd keethae raas || |
| They came in palanquins, decorated with ivory; |

| ਉਪਰਹੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਰੀਐ ਝਲੇ ਝਿਮਕਨਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥ |
| ouparahu paanee vaareeai jhalae jhimakan paas ||2|| |
| water was sprinkled over their heads, and glittering fans were waved above them. ||2|| |

| ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਬਹਿਠੀਆ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਖੜੀਆ ॥ |
| eik lakh lehanih behitheeaa lakh lehanih kharreeaa || |
| They were given hundreds of thousands of coins when they sat, and hundreds of thousands of coins when they stood. |

| ਗਰੀ ਛੁਹਾਰੇ ਖਾਂਦੀਆ ਮਾਣਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਸੇਜੜੀਆ ॥ |
| garee shhuhaarae khaandheeaa maananih saejarreeaa || |
| They ate coconuts and dates, and rested comfortably upon their beds. |
 |
| ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਗਲਿ ਸਿਲਕਾ ਪਾਈਆ ਤੁਟਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮੋਤਸਰੀਆ ॥੩॥ |
| thinh gal silakaa paaeeaa thuttanih mothasareeaa ||3|| |
| But ropes were put around their necks, and their strings of pearls were broken. ||3|| |

| ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਰਖੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| dhhan joban dhue vairee hoeae jinhee rakhae rang laae || |
| Their wealth and youthful beauty, which gave them so much pleasure, have now become their enemies. |

| ਦੂਤਾ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ |
| dhoothaa no furamaaeiaa lai chalae path gavaae || |
| The order was given to the soldiers, who dishonored them, and carried them away. |
 |
| ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੪॥ |
| jae this bhaavai dhae vaddiaaee jae bhaavai dhaee sajaae ||4|| |
| If it is pleasing to God's Will, He bestows greatness; if is pleases His Will, He bestows punishment. ||4|| |

| ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਜੇ ਚੇਤੀਐ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ |

| If someone focuses on the Lord beforehand, then why should he be punished? |

| ਸਾਹਾਂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਤਮਾਸੈ ਚਾਇ ॥ |

| The kings had lost their higher consciousness, reveling in pleasure and sensuality. |
