| Since Baabar's rule has been proclaimed, even the princes have no food to eat. ||5|| |

| ਇਕਨਾ ਵਖਤ ਖੁਆਈਅਹਿ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| eikanaa vakhath khuaaeeahi eikanhaa poojaa jaae || |
| The Muslims have lost their five times of daily prayer, and the Hindus have lost their worship as well. |

| ਚਉਕੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀਆ ਕਿਉ ਟਿਕੇ ਕਢਹਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ |
| choukae vin hindhavaaneeaa kio ttikae kadtehi naae || |
| Without their sacred squares, how shall the Hindu women bathe and apply the frontal marks to their foreheads? |

| ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਹੁਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥ |
| raam n kabehoo chaethiou hun kehan n milai khudhaae ||6|| |
| They never remembered their Lord as Raam, and now they cannot even chant Khudaa-i||6|| |

| ਇਕਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਇਕਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥ |
| eik ghar aavehi aapanai eik mil mil pushhehi sukh || |
| Some have returned to their homes, and meeting their relatives, they ask about their safety. |

| ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਏਹੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥ |
| eikanhaa eaeho likhiaa behi behi rovehi dhukh || |
| For some, it is pre-ordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain. |

| ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਨੁਖ ॥੭॥੧੧॥ |

| Where are the games, the stables, the horses? Where are the drums and the bugles? |

| Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms? |

| ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਆਰਸੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਬੰਕੇ ਐਥੈ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ |

| Where are the rings and the beautiful faces? They are no longer to be seen here. ||1|| |

| This world is Yours; You are the Lord of the Universe. |

| In an instant, You establish and disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. ||1||Pause|| |

| Where are the houses, the gates, the hotels and palaces? Where are those beautiful way-stations? |

| ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| kehaan s saej sukhaalee kaaman jis vaekh needh n paaee || |
| Where are those beautiful women, reclining on their beds, whose beauty would not allow one to sleep? |

| ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਪਾਨ ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਮਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਛਾਈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| kehaa s paan thanbolee haramaa hoeeaa shhaaee maaee ||2|| |
| Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the haremees? They have vanished like shadows. ||2|| |

| ਇਸੁ ਜਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੁਤੀ ਇਨਿ ਜਰ ਘਣੀ ਖੁਆਈ ॥ |
| eis jar kaaran ghanee viguthee ein jar ghanee khuaaee || |
| For the sake of this wealth, so many were ruined; because of this wealth, so many have been disgraced. |

| ਪਾਪਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
| paapaa baajhahu hovai naahee mueiaa saathh n jaaee || |
| It was not gathered without sin, and it does not go along with the dead. |

| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਖੁਸਿ ਲਏ ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ॥੩॥ |
| jis no aap khuaaeae karathaa khus leae changiaaee ||3|| |
| Those, whom the Creator Lord would destroy - first He strips them of virtue. ||3|| |

| ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thhaan mukaam jalae bij mandhar mushh mushh kueir rulaaeiaa || |
| He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust. |

| ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ |
| koee mugal n hoaa andhhaa kinai n parachaa laaeiaa ||4|| |
| None of the Mugals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4|| |

| ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥ |
| mugal pathaanaa bhee larraaee ran mehi thaeg vagaaee || |
| The battle raged between the Mugals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield. |

| ਓਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥ |
| ounhee thupak thaan chalaaee ounhee hasath chirraaee || |
| They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants. |

| ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥ |
| jinh kee cheeree dharageh paattee thinhaa maranaa bhaaee ||5|| |
| Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord's Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5|| |

| ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥ |

| The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs |

| ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥ |
| eikanhaa paeran sir khur paattae eikanhaa vaas masaanee || |
| some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground. |

| ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥ |
| jinh kae bankae gharee n aaeiaa thinh kio rain vihaanee ||6|| |
| Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6|| |

| ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥ |
| aapae karae karaaeae karathaa kis no aakh sunaaeeai || |
| The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain? |

| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥ |
| dhukh sukh thaerai bhaanai hovai kis thhai jaae rooaaeeai || |
| Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry? |

| ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥ |

| koorr kamaavehi aadhamee baandhhehi ghar baaraa ||1|| |
| Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1|| |

| ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| neeth neeth ghar baandhheeahi jae rehanaa hoee || |
| Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever. |

| ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥ |
| pindd pavai jeeo chalasee jae jaanai koee ||2|| |
| The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2|| |

| ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| ouhee ouhee kiaa karahu hai hosee soee || |
| Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be. |

| ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥ |
| thum rovahugae ous no thumh ko koun roee ||3|| |
| You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3|| |

| ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| dhhandhhaa pittihu bhaaeeho thumh koorr kamaavahu || |
| You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood. |

| ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥ |
| ouhu n sunee kath hee thumh lok sunaavahu ||4|| |
| The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4|| |
 |
| ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| jis thae suthaa naanakaa jaagaaeae soee || |
| Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again. |

| ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥ |
| jae ghar boojhai aapanaa thaan needh n hoee ||5|| |
| One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5|| |
 |
| ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ |
| jae chaladhaa lai chaliaa kishh sanpai naalae || |
| If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him, |
 |
| ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥ |
| thaa dhhan sanchahu dhaekh kai boojhahu beechaarae ||6|| |
| then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6|| |
 |
| ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| vanaj karahu makhasoodh laihu math pashhothaavahu || |
| Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later. |
 |
| ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥ |
| aougan shhoddahu gun karahu aisae thath paraavahu ||7|| |
| Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7|| |
 |
| ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| dhharam bhoom sath beej kar aisee kiras kamaavahu || |
| Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming. |

| ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥ |
| thaan vaapaaree jaaneeahu laahaa lai jaavahu ||8|| |
| Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8|| |
 |
| ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ |
| karam hovai sathigur milai boojhai beechaaraa || |
| If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand. |
