| How can coming and going, the cycle of reincarnation be ended? And how can one meet the Lord? |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੋਈ ॥੧॥ |
| janam maran kaa dhukh ghano nith sehasaa dhoee ||1|| |
| The pain of birth and death is so great, in constant skepticism and duality. ||1|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਫਿਟੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ |
| bin naavai kiaa jeevanaa fitt dhhrig chathuraaee || |
| Without the Name, what is life? Cleverness is detestable and cursed. |

| Coming and going is ended only when one finds the True Guru. |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਦੇਇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੂਰਾ ॥੨॥ |
| raam naam dhhan raas dhaee binasai bhram kooraa ||2|| |
| He gives the wealth and capital of the Lord's Name, and false doubt is destroyed. ||2|| |

| ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਏ ॥ |
| santh janaa ko mil rehai dhhan dhhan jas gaaeae || |
| Joining the humble Saintly beings, let us sing the blessed, blessed Praises of the Lord. |

| ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥ |

| The Primal Lord, the Infinite, is obtained by the Gurmukh. ||3|| |

| ਨਟੂਐ ਸਾਂਗੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| nattooai saang banaaeiaa baajee sansaaraa || |
| The drama of the world is staged like the show of a buffoon. |
|
| ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਬਾਜੀ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਉਝਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥ |
| khin pal baajee dhaekheeai oujharath nehee baaraa ||4|| |
| For an instant, for a moment, the show is seen, but it disappears in no time at all. ||4|| |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਖੇਲਣਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ |
| houmai chouparr khaelanaa jhoothae ahankaaraa || |
| The game of chance is played on the board of egotism, with the pieces of falsehood and ego. |
|
| ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹਾਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਿਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੫॥ |
| sabh jag haarai so jinai gur sabadh veechaaraa ||5|| |
| The whole world loses; he alone wins, who reflects upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||5|| |
|
| ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਹਥਿ ਟੋਹਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥ |
| jio andhhulai hathh ttohanee har naam hamaarai || |
| As is the cane in the hand of the blind man, so is the Lord's Name for me. |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਉਤ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੬॥ |
| raam naam har ttaek hai nis dhouth savaarai ||6|| |
| The Lord's Name is my Support, night and day and morning. ||6|| |
|
| ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥ |
| jio thoon raakhehi thio rehaa har naam adhhaaraa || |
| As You keep me, Lord, I live; the Lord's Name is my only Support. |

| ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥ |
| anth sakhaaee paaeiaa jan mukath dhuaaraa ||7|| |
| It is my only comfort in the end; the gate of salvation is found by His humble servants. ||7|| |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥ |
| janam maran dhukh maettiaa jap naam muraarae || |
| The pain of birth and death is removed, by chanting and meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੨੨॥ |

| The Shaastras, the Vedas and the Simritees are contained in the ocean of Your Name; the River Ganges is held in Your Feet. |

| ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਮਤਿ ਰਾਵੈ ਤੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ |

| The intellect can understand the world of the three modes, but You, O Primal Lord, are totally astounding. ||1|| |

| thaa kae roop n jaahee lakhanae kiaa kar aakh veechaaree ||2|| |
| His beauteous forms cannot be comprehended; what can anyone accomplish by discussing and debating? ||2|| |

| ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੁਗ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ॥ |
| theen gunaa thaerae jug hee anthar chaarae thaereeaa khaanee || |
| Throughout the ages, You are the three qualities, and the four sources of creation. |

| ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਥੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥੩॥ |
| karam hovai thaa param padh paaeeai kathhae akathh kehaanee ||3|| |
| If You show Your Mercy, then one obtains the supreme status, and speaks the Unspoken Speech. ||3|| |
|
| ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥ |
| thoon karathaa keeaa sabh thaeraa kiaa ko karae paraanee || |
| You are the Creator; all are created by You. What can any mortal being do? |

| ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਪਣੀ ਸਾਈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੪॥ |
| jaa ko nadhar karehi thoon apanee saaee sach samaanee ||4|| |
| He alone, upon whom You shower Your Grace, is absorbed into the Truth. ||4|| |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਲੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ |
| naam thaeraa sabh koee laeth hai jaethee aavan jaanee || |
| Everyone who comes and goes chants Your Name. |

| ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਰ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥੫॥ |
| jaa thudhh bhaavai thaa guramukh boojhai hor manamukh firai eiaanee ||5|| |
| When it is pleasing to Your Will, then the Gurmukh understands. Otherwise, the self-willed manmukhs wander in ignorance. ||5|| |
|
| ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਕਉ ਦੀਏ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ |
| chaarae vaedh brehamae ko dheeeae parr parr karae veechaaree || |
| You gave the four Vedas to Brahma, for him to read and read continually, and reflect upon. |
|
| ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ |
| thaa kaa hukam n boojhai bapurraa narak surag avathaaree ||6|| |
| The wretched one does not understand His Command, and is reincarnated into heaven and hell. ||6|| |
|
| ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗਹ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੀਏ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੀ ॥ |
| jugeh jugeh kae raajae keeeae gaavehi kar avathaaree || |
| In each and every age, He creates the kings, who are sung of as His Incarnations. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਭੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੭॥ |
| thin bhee anth n paaeiaa thaa kaa kiaa kar aakh veechaaree ||7|| |
| Even they have not found His limits; what can I speak of and contemplate? ||7|| |
|
| ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥ |
| thoon sachaa thaeraa keeaa sabh saachaa dhaehi th saach vakhaanee || |
| You are True, and all that You do is True. If You bless me with the Truth, I will speak on it. |

| ਜਾ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਵਹਿ ਅਪਣਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੨੩॥ |
| jaa ko sach bujhaavehi apanaa sehajae naam samaanee ||8||1||23|| |
| One whom You inspire to understand the Truth, is easily absorbed into the Naam. ||8||1||23|| |

| The True Guru has dispelled my doubts. |

| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ |
| har naam niranjan mann vasaaeiaa || |
| He has enshrined the Immaculate Name of the Lord within my mind. |
|
| ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| sabadh cheen sadhaa sukh paaeiaa ||1|| |
| Focusing on the Word of the Shabad, I have obtained lasting peace. ||1|| |

| ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ |

| Listen, O my mind, to the essence of spiritual wisdom. |

| ਦੇਵਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhaevan vaalaa sabh bidhh jaanai guramukh paaeeai naam nidhhaan ||1|| rehaao || |
| The Great Giver knows our condition completely; the Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ |
| sathigur bhaettae kee vaddiaaee || |
| The great glory of meeting the True Guru is |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਮਮਤਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ |
| jin mamathaa agan thrisanaa bujhaaee || |
| that it has quenched the fire of possessiveness and desire; |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| sehajae maathaa har gun gaaee ||2|| |
| imbued with peace and poise, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2|| |

| ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ |

| Without the Perfect Guru, no one knows the Lord. |
