eik nihaalee pai savanih eik oupar rehan kharrae || |
Some lie down and sleep on soft beds, while others remain watchful. |

ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ |

aapae saajae karae aap jaaee bh rakhai aap || |
He Himself creates and fashions the world, and He Himself keeps it in order. |

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥ |
this vich janth oupaae kai dhaekhai thhaap outhhaap || |
Having created the beings within it, He oversees their birth and death. |

ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥ |
kis no keheeai naanakaa sabh kishh aapae aap ||2|| |
Unto whom should we speak, O Nanak, when He Himself is all-in-all? ||2|| |

The description of the greatness of the Great Lord cannot be described. |

ਸੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਦਰ ਕਰੀਮੁ ਦੇ ਜੀਆ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥ |
so karathaa kaadhar kareem dhae jeeaa rijak sanbaahi || |
He is the Creator, all-lowerful and benevolent; He gives sustenance to all beings. |

ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਤਿੰਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
saaee kaar kamaavanee dhhur shhoddee thinnai paae || |
The mortal does that work, which has been pre-destined from the very beginning. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੀ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
naanak eaekee baaharee hor dhoojee naahee jaae || |
O Nanak, except for the One Lord, there is no other place at all. |

Falling at the Feet of the Guru, I pray, and ask Him, ""Why was man created? |

ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਹਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
kavan kaaj jag oupajai binasai kehahu mohi samajhaaeiaa ||1|| |
What deeds cause the world to come into being, and be destroyed? Tell me, that I may understand.""||1|| |

ਦੇਵ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਭੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥ |
dhaev karahu dhaeiaa mohi maarag laavahu jith bhai bandhhan thoottai || |
O Divine Guru, please, show Mercy to me, and place me on the right path, by which the bonds of fear may be cut away. |

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਫੇੜ ਕਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਜੀਅ ਜਨਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
janam maran dhukh faerr karam sukh jeea janam thae shhoottai ||1|| rehaao || |
The pains of birth and death come from past actions and karma; peace comes when the soul finds release from reincarnation. ||1||Pause|| |

ਮਾਇਆ ਫਾਸ ਬੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਫਾਰੈ ਅਰੁ ਮਨ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਨ ਲੂਕੇ ॥ |
maaeiaa faas bandhh nehee faarai ar man sunn n lookae || |
The mortal does not break free from the bonds of the noose of Maya, and he does not seek the shelter of the profound, absolute Lord. |

ਆਪਾ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਨ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਭਿਉ ਨ ਚੂਕੇ ॥੨॥ |
aapaa padh nirabaan n cheenihaaa ein bidhh abhio n chookae ||2|| |
He does not realize the dignity of the self, and Nirvaanaa; because of this, his doubt does not depart. ||2|| |

ਕਹੀ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਉਪਜੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਭਾਵ ਅਭਾਵ ਬਿਹੂਣਾ ॥ |
kehee n oupajai oupajee jaanai bhaav abhaav bihoonaa || |
The soul is not born, even though he thinks it is born; it is free from birth and death. |

ਉਦੈ ਅਸਤ ਕੀ ਮਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨਾਸੀ ਤਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣਾ ॥੩॥ |
oudhai asath kee man budhh naasee tho sadhaa sehaj liv leenaa ||3|| |
When the mortal gives up his ideas of birth and death, he remains constantly absorbed in the Lord's Love. ||3|| |

ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਬਿੰਬੁ ਬਿੰਬ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਦਕ ਕੁੰਭੁ ਬਿਗਰਾਨਾ ॥ |
jio prathibinb binb ko milee hai oudhak kunbh bigaraanaa || |
As the reflection of an object blends in the water when the pitcher is broken, |

ਗਜ ਸਾਢੇ ਤੈ ਤੈ ਧੋਤੀਆ ਤਿਹਰੇ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਤਗ ॥ |
gaj saadtae thai thai dhhotheeaa thiharae paaein thag || |
They wear loin cloths, three and a half yards long, and triple-wound sacred threads. |

ਗਲੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਜਪਮਾਲੀਆ ਲੋਟੇ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬਗ ॥ |
galee jinhaa japamaaleeaa lottae hathh nibag || |
They have rosaries around their necks, and they carry glittering jugs in their hands. |

ਓਇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਨਾਰਸਿ ਕੇ ਠਗ ॥੧॥ |
oue har kae santh n aakheeahi baanaaras kae thag ||1|| |
They are not called Saints of the Lord - they are thugs of Benares. ||1|| |

ਐਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਨ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
aisae santh n mo ko bhaavehi || |
Such 'saints' are not pleasing to me; |

ਡਾਲਾ ਸਿਉ ਪੇਡਾ ਗਟਕਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
ddaalaa sio paeddaa gattakaavehi ||1|| rehaao || |
they eat the trees along with the branches. ||1||Pause|| |
|
ਬਾਸਨ ਮਾਂਜਿ ਚਰਾਵਹਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਾਠੀ ਧੋਇ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
baasan maanj charaavehi oopar kaathee dhhoe jalaavehi || |
They wash their pots and pans before putting them on the stove, and they wash the wood before lighting it. |

ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖੋਦਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦੁਇ ਚੂਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥੨॥ |
basudhhaa khodh karehi dhue choolaeh saarae maanas khaavehi ||2|| |
They dig up the earth and make two fireplaces, but they eat the whole person! ||2|| |
|
ਓਇ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਅਪਰਸ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
oue paapee sadhaa firehi aparaadhhee mukhahu aparas kehaavehi || |
Those sinners continually wander in evil deeds, while they call themselves touch-nothing saints. |
|
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਸਗਲ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਡੁਬਾਵਹਿ ॥੩॥ |
sadhaa sadhaa firehi abhimaanee sagal kuttanb ddubaavehi ||3|| |
They wander around forever and ever in their self-conceit, and all their families are drowned. ||3|| |
|
ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਤੈਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
jith ko laaeiaa thith hee laagaa thaisae karam kamaavai || |
He is attached to that, to which the Lord has attached him, and he acts accordingly. |

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥੨॥ |
kahu kabeer jis sathigur bhaettai punarap janam n aavai ||4||2|| |
Says Kabeer, one who meets the True Guru, is not reincarnated again. ||4||2|| |

baap dhilaasaa maero keenhaa || saej sukhaalee mukh anmrith dheenhaa || |
My Father has comforted me. He has given me a cozy bed, and placed His Ambrosial Nectar in my mouth. |

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਪ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥ |
this baap ko kio manahu visaaree || |
How could I forget that Father from my mind? |

ਆਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਨ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
aagai gaeiaa n baajee haaree ||1|| |
When I go to the world hereafter, I shall not lose the game. ||1|| |

ਮੁਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ਹਉ ਖਰਾ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ॥ |
muee maeree maaee ho kharaa sukhaalaa || |
Maya is dead, O mother, and I am very happy. |

ਪਹਿਰਉ ਨਹੀ ਦਗਲੀ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਪਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
pehiro nehee dhagalee lagai n paalaa ||1|| rehaao || |
I do not wear the patched coat, nor do I feel the chill. ||1||Pause|| |

ਬਲਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਪੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਉ ਜਾਇਆ ॥ |
bal this baapai jin ho jaaeiaa || |
I am a sacrifice to my Father, who gave me life. |

ਪੰਚਾ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ |
panchaa thae maeraa sang chukaaeiaa || |
He put an end to my association with the five deadly sins. |
|
ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਾਵਾ ਤਲਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥ |
panch maar paavaa thal dheenae || |
I have conquered those five demons, and trampled them underfoot. |
|
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨੇ ॥੨॥ |
har simaran maeraa man than bheenae ||2|| |
Remembering the Lord in meditation, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2|| |

ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਵਡ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥ |
pithaa hamaaro vadd gosaaee || |
My Father is the Great Lord of the Universe. |

ਤਿਸੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਹਿ ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
this pithaa pehi ho kio kar jaaee || |
How shall I go to that Father? |

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਤ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ |
sathigur milae th maarag dhikhaaeiaa || |
When I met the True Guru, He showed me the Way. |
