| the spiritual teacher in his yellow robes dwells there. ||1|| |

| ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੂਬੁ ਗਾਵਤਾ ਹੈ ॥ |
| vaahu vaahu kiaa khoob gaavathaa hai || |
| Waaho! Waaho! Hail! Hail! How wondrously he sings. |

| ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਕਰਹਿ ਖਵਾਸੀ ॥ |
| naaradh saaradh karehi khavaasee || |
| Naarada the sage, and Shaarada the goddess of knowledge, serve the Lord. |

| ਪਾਸਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਕਵਲਾ ਦਾਸੀ ॥੨॥ |
| paas baithee beebee kavalaa dhaasee ||2|| |
| The goddess Lakhshmi sits by Him as His slave. ||2|| |

| ਕੰਠੇ ਮਾਲਾ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ॥ |
| kanthae maalaa jihavaa raam || |
| The mala is around my neck, and the Lord's Name is upon my tongue. |

| ਸਹੰਸ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਕਰਉ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥੩॥ |
| sehans naam lai lai karo salaam ||3|| |
| I repeat the Naam, the Name of the Lord, a thousand times, and bow in reverence to Him. ||3|| |

| You tear off the leaves, O gardener, but in each and every leaf, there is life. |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਉ ਪਾਤੀ ਤੋਰੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਹਨ ਨਿਰਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ |
| jis paahan ko paathee thorai so paahan nirajeeo ||1|| |
| That stone idol, for which you tear off those leaves - that stone idol is lifeless. ||1|| |

| In this, you are mistaken, O gardener. |

| Brahma is in the leaves, Vishnu is in the branches, and Shiva is in the flowers. |

| When you break these three gods, whose service are you performing? ||2|| |

| ਪਾਖਾਨ ਗਢਿ ਕੈ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਛਾਤੀ ਪਾਉ ॥ |

| The sculptor carves the stone and fashions it into an idol, placing his feet upon its chest. |

| ਜੇ ਏਹ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੈ ਤਉ ਗੜ੍ਹਣਹਾਰੇ ਖਾਉ ॥੩॥ |
| jae eaeh moorath saachee hai tho garrhanehaarae khaao ||3|| |
| If this stone god was true, it would devour the sculptor for this! ||3|| |

| ਭਾਤੁ ਪਹਿਤਿ ਅਰੁ ਲਾਪਸੀ ਕਰਕਰਾ ਕਾਸਾਰੁ ॥ |

| Rice and beans, candies, cakes and cookies |

| ਭੋਗਨਹਾਰੇ ਭੋਗਿਆ ਇਸੁ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੪॥ |
| bhoganehaarae bhogiaa eis moorath kae mukh shhaar ||4|| |
| - the priest enjoys these, while he puts ashes into the mouth of the idol. ||4|| |

| ਮਾਲਿਨਿ ਭੂਲੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਹਮ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ |
| maalin bhoolee jag bhulaanaa ham bhulaanae naahi || |
| The gardener is mistaken, and the world is mistaken, but I am not mistaken. |

| baareh baras baalapan beethae bees baras kashh thap n keeou || |
| Twelve years pass in childhood, and for another twenty years, he does not practice self-discipline and austerity. |

| ਤੀਸ ਬਰਸ ਕਛੁ ਦੇਵ ਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥ |
| thees baras kashh dhaev n poojaa fir pashhuthaanaa biradhh bhaeiou ||1|| |
| For another thirty years, he does not worship God in any way, and then, when he is old, he repents and regrets. ||1|| |

| ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥ |

| His life wastes away as he cries out, ""Mine, mine!"" |

| ਸਾਇਰੁ ਸੋਖਿ ਭੁਜੰ ਬਲਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| The pool of his power has dried up. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸੂਕੇ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਪਾਲਿ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ਲੂਣੈ ਖੇਤਿ ਹਥ ਵਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| sookae saravar paal bandhhaavai loonai khaeth hathh vaar karai || |
| He makes a dam around the dried-up pool, and with his hands, he makes a fence around the harvested field. |

| ਆਇਓ ਚੋਰੁ ਤੁਰੰਤਹ ਲੇ ਗਇਓ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਖਤ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਫਿਰੈ ॥੨॥ |
| aaeiou chor thurantheh lae gaeiou maeree raakhath mugadhh firai ||2|| |
| When the thief of Death comes, he quickly carries away what the fool had tried to preserve as his own. ||2|| |

| ਚਰਨ ਸੀਸੁ ਕਰ ਕੰਪਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਨੈਨੀ ਨੀਰੁ ਅਸਾਰ ਬਹੈ ॥ |
| charan sees kar kanpan laagae nainee neer asaar behai || |
| His feet and head and hands begin to tremble, and the tears flow copiously from his eyes. |

| ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਤਬ ਰੇ ਧਰਮ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਰੈ ॥੩॥ |
| jihavaa bachan sudhh nehee nikasai thab rae dhharam kee aas karai ||3|| |
| His tongue has not spoken the correct words, but now, he hopes to practice religion! ||3|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਓ ॥ |
| har jeeo kirapaa karai liv laavai laahaa har har naam leeou || |
| If the Dear Lord shows His Mercy, one enshrines love for Him, and obtains the Profit of the Lord's Name. |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਅੰਤੇ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲਿਓ ॥੪॥ |
| gur parasaadhee har dhhan paaeiou anthae chaladhiaa naal chaliou ||4|| |
| By Guru's Grace, he receives the wealth of the Lord's Name, which alone shall go with him, when he departs in the end. ||4|| |

| ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਛੂਐ ਲੈ ਨ ਗਇਓ ॥ |

| Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - he shall not take any other wealth with him. |

| When the summons comes from the King, the Lord of the Universe, the mortal departs, leaving behind his wealth and mansions. ||5||2||15|| |

| To some, the Lord has given silks and satins, and to some, beds decorated with cotton ribbons. |

| ਕਾਹੂ ਗਰੀ ਗੋਦਰੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਖਾਨ ਪਰਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ |
| kaahoo garee godharee naahee kaahoo khaan paraaraa ||1|| |
| Some do not even have a poor patched coat, and some live in thatched huts. ||1|| |

| ਅਹਿਰਖ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇ ਮਨ ॥ |

| Do not indulge in envy and bickering, O my mind. |

| The potter works the same clay, and colors the pots in different ways. |

| ਕਾਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਮੋਤੀ ਮੁਕਤਾਹਲ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| kaahoo mehi mothee mukathaahal kaahoo biaadhh lagaaee ||2|| |
| Into some, he sets pearls, while to others, he attaches filth. ||2|| |

| ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਮੂੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥੩॥ |
| jam kaa ddandd moondd mehi laagai khin mehi karai nibaeraa ||3|| |
| When the Messenger of Death strikes him with his club, in an instant, everything is settled. ||3|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਊਤਮੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸਦਾਵੈ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| har jan ootham bhagath sadhaavai aagiaa man sukh paaee || |
| The Lord's humble servant is called the most exalted Saint; he obeys the Command of the Lord's Order, and obtains peace. |

| ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੪॥ |

| Whatever is pleasing to the Lord, he accepts as True; he enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind. ||4|| |
