| He decides to go to the west, but the Lord leads him away to the east. |

| In an instant, He establishes and disestablishes; He holds all matters in His hands. ||1|| |

| Cleverness is of no use at all. |

| dhaes kamaavan dhhan joran kee manasaa beechae nikasae saas || |
| In his desire to acquire land and accumulate wealth, one's breath escapes him. |

| ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸ ਸਭ ਤਿਆਗੇ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਸ ॥੨॥ |
| lasakar naeb khavaas sabh thiaagae jam pur ooth sidhhaas ||2|| |
| He must leave all his armies, assistants and servants; rising up, he departs to the City of Death. ||2|| |
|
| ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਨਿ ਮਨਹਠ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਨਾਤ ॥ |
| hoe anann manehath kee dhrirrathaa aapas ko jaanaath || |
| Believing himself to be unique, he clings to his stubborn mind, and shows himself off. |

| ਜੋ ਅਨਿੰਦੁ ਨਿੰਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਓ ਸੋਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਖਾਤ ॥੩॥ |
| jo anindh nindh kar shhoddiou soee fir fir khaath ||3|| |
| That food, which the blameless people have condemned and discarded, he eats again and again. ||3|| |

| ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਭਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਟੀ ਫਾਸ ॥ |
| sehaj subhaae bheae kirapaalaa this jan kee kaattee faas || |
| One, unto whom the Lord shows His natural mercy, has the noose of Death cut away from him. |

| naam nidhhaan jin jan japiou thin kae bandhhan kaattae || |
| Those humble beings who chant the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, have their bonds broken. |

| ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਮਤਾ ਇਹ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤੇ ਹਾਟੇ ॥੧॥ |
| kaam krodhh maaeiaa bikh mamathaa eih biaadhh thae haattae ||1|| |
| Sexual desirer, anger, the poison of Maya and egotism - they are rid of these afflictions. ||1|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਇਓ ॥ |

| One who joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and chants the Praises of the Lord, |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਭਇਓ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਅਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| gur parasaadh bhaeiou man niramal sarab sukhaa sukh paaeiao ||1|| rehaao || |
| has his mind purified, by Guru's Grace, and he obtains the joy of all joys. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਓ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨੈ ਐਸੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਮਾਨੀ ॥ |
| jo kishh keeou soee bhal maanai aisee bhagath kamaanee || |
| Whatever the Lord does, he sees that as good; such is the devotional service he performs. |

| ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਭ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨੀਸਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ |
| mithr sathra sabh eaek samaanae jog jugath neesaanee ||2|| |
| He sees friends and enemies as all the same; this is the sign of the Way of Yoga. ||2|| |

| ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਥਾਈ ਆਨ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ |

| The all-pervading Lord is fully filling all places; why should I go anywhere else? |

| ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵਿਓ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੩॥ |
| ghatt ghatt anthar sarab niranthar rang raviou rang raathaa ||3|| |
| He is permeating and pervading within each and every heart; I am immersed in His Love, dyed in the color of His Love. ||3|| |

| ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟੇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥ |

| His troubles and worries are ended in an instant; O Nanak, he merges in celestial peace. ||4||5||6|| |

| Whoever I approach to ask for help, I find him full of his own troubles. |

| ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ |
| paarabreham jin ridhai araadhhiaa thin bho saagar thariaa ||1|| |
| One who worships in his heart the Supreme Lord God, crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੈ ॥ |
| gur har bin ko n brithhaa dhukh kaattai || |
| No one, except the Guru-Lord, can dispel our pain and sorrow. |

| ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਅਵਰ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਜਸੁ ਘਾਟੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| Forsaking God, and serving another, one's honor, dignity and reputation are decreased. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਸਨਬੰਧ ਸੈਨ ਸਾਕ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kae sanabandhh sain saak kith hee kaam n aaeiaa || |
| Relatives, relations and family bound through Maya are of no avail. |

| ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲੁ ਊਚਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| har kaa dhaas neech kul oochaa this sang man baanshhath fal paaeiaa ||2|| |
| The Lord's servant, although of lowly birth, is exalted. Associating with him, one obtains the fruits of his mind's desires. ||2|| |

| ਲਾਖ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਬਿੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੀ ॥ |
| laakh kott bikhiaa kae binjan thaa mehi thrisan n boojhee || |
| Through corruption, one may obtain thousands and millions of enjoyments, but even so, his desires are not satisfied through them. |

| ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਸੂਝੀ ॥੩॥ |
| simarath naam kott oujeeaaraa basath agochar soojhee ||3|| |
| Remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord, millions of lights appear, and the incomprehensible is understood. ||3|| |

| ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੈ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ |

| Wandering and roaming around, I have come to Your Door, Destroyer of fear, O Lord King. |

| First, he came to dwell in his mother's womb; leaving it, he came into the world. |

| ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛਹੂ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| chithr saal sundhar baag mandhar sang n kashhehoo jaaeiaa ||1|| |
| Splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces - none of these shall go with him. ||1|| |

| ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭ ਲਬੀ ॥ |

| All other greeds of the greedy are false. |

| ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਫਬੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| gur poorai dheeou har naamaa jeea ko eaehaa vasath fabee ||1|| rehaao || |
| The Perfect Guru has given me the Name of the Lord, which my soul has come to treasure. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਰਚਿ ਹਸਿਆ ॥ |
| eisatt meeth bandhhap suth bhaaee sang banithaa rach hasiaa || |
| Surrounded by dear friends, relatives, children, siblings and spouse, he laughs playfully. |

| ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| jab anthee aousar aae baniou hai ounh paekhath hee kaal grasiaa ||2|| |
| But when the very last moment arrives, Death seizes him, while they merely look on. ||2|| |
|
| ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥ |
| kar kar anarathh bihaajhee sanpai sueinaa roopaa dhaamaa || |
| By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money, |
|
| ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥ |
| bhaarree ko ouhu bhaarraa miliaa hor sagal bhaeiou biraanaa ||3|| |
| but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3|| |
|
| ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ |
| haivar gaivar rathh sanbaahae gahu kar keenae maerae || |
| He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own. |
|
| ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥ |
| jab thae hoee laanmee dhhaaee chalehi naahee eik pairae ||4|| |
| But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ |
| naam dhhan naam sukh raajaa naam kuttanb sehaaee || |
| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper. |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥ |

| The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. ||5||1||8|| |
