| The many waves of desire for Maya are burnt away, when the Guru's spiritual wisdom is enshrined in the heart, through the Guru's Mantra. |

| Destroy my egotism, O Merciful Lord; dispel my anxiety, O Infinite Primal Lord. ||3|| |

| Remember in meditation the Almighty Lord, every moment and every instant; meditate on God in the celestial peace of Samaadhi. |

| O Merciful to the meek, perfectly blissful Lord, I beg for the dust of the feet of the Holy. ||4|| |

| ਮੋਹ ਮਿਥਨ ਦੁਰੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| moh mithhan dhuranth aasaa baasanaa bikaar || |
| Emotional attachment is false, desire is filthy, and longing is corrupt. |

| ਰਖੁ ਧਰਮ ਭਰਮ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਧਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੫॥ |
| rakh dhharam bharam bidhaar man thae oudhhar har nirankaar ||5|| |
| Please, preserve my faith, dispel these doubts from my mind, and save me, O Formless Lord. ||5|| |

| ਧਨਾਢਿ ਆਢਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਹੋਤ ਜਿਨਾ ਨ ਚੀਰ ॥ |
| dhhanaadt aadt bhanddaar har nidhh hoth jinaa n cheer || |
| They have become wealthy, loaded with the treasures of the Lord's riches; they were lacking even clothes. |

| ਖਲ ਮੁਗਧ ਮੂੜ ਕਟਾਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਸ੍ਰੀਧਰ ਭਏ ਗੁਣ ਮਤਿ ਧੀਰ ॥੬॥ |
| khal mugadhh moorr kattaakhy sreedhhar bheae gun math dhheer ||6|| |
| The idiotic, foolish and senseless people have become virtuous and patient, receiving the Gracious Glance of the Lord of wealth. ||6|| |

| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਿਦ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ॥ |
| jeevan mukath jagadhees jap man dhhaar ridh paratheeth || |
| Become Jivan-Mukta, liberated while yet alive, by meditating on the Lord of the Universe, O mind, and maintaining faith in Him in your heart. |

| ਜੀਅ ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਰਮਣੰ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸਹ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੭॥ |
| jeea dhaeiaa maeiaa sarabathr ramanan param hanseh reeth ||7|| |
| Show kindness and mercy to all beings, and realize that the Lord is pervading everywhere; this is the way of life of the enlightened soul, the supreme swan. ||7|| |

| He grants the Blessed Vision of His Darshan to those who listen to His Praises, and who, with their tongues, chant His Name. |

| This world perishing in attachment and possessiveness; no one knows the way of life. |

| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਣ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
| gur kai bhaanai jo chalai thaan jeevan padhavee paahi || |
| One who walks in harmony with the Guru's Will, obtains the supreme status of life. |

| ਓਇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਨ ਜੀਵਤੇ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥ |
| oue sadhaa sadhaa jan jeevathae jo har charanee chith laahi || |
| Those humble beings who focus their consciousness on the Lord's Feet, live forever and ever. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ |

| Within the self is the pain of doubt; engrossed in worldly affairs, they are killing themselves. |

| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae suthae kabehi n jaagehi maaeiaa moh piaar || |
| Asleep in the love of duality, they never wake up; they are in love with, and attached to Maya. |

| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੨॥ |
| har naam n paaeiaa janam birathhaa gavaaeiaa naanak jam maar karae khuaar ||2|| |
| They do not obtain the Lord's Name, and they waste away their lives in vain; O Nanak, the Messenger of Death punishes and dishonors them. ||2|| |

| He created Himself - at that time, there was no other. |

| ਮਤਾ ਮਸੂਰਤਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| mathaa masoorath aap karae jo karae s hoee || |
| He consulted Himself for advice, and what He did came to pass. |

| ਤਦਹੁ ਆਕਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਤਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਈ ॥ |
| thadhahu aakaas n paathaal hai naa thrai loee || |
| At that time, there were no Akaashic Ethers, no nether regions, nor the three worlds. |

| ਤਦਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| thadhahu aapae aap nirankaar hai naa oupath hoee || |
| At that time, only the Formless Lord Himself existed - there was no creation. |

| ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ |
| jio this bhaavai thivai karae this bin avar n koee ||1|| |
| As it pleased Him, so did He act; without Him, there was no other. ||1|| |

| saahib maeraa sadhaa hai dhisai sabadh kamaae || |
| My Master is eternal. He is seen by practicing the Word of the Shabad. |

| ਓਹੁ ਅਉਹਾਣੀ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| ouhu aouhaanee kadhae naahi naa aavai naa jaae || |
| He never perishes; He does not come or go in reincarnation. |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੋ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| sadhaa sadhaa so saeveeai jo sabh mehi rehai samaae || |
| So serve Him, forever and ever; He is contained in all. |

| ਅਵਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜੰਮੈ ਤੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| avar dhoojaa kio saeveeai janmai thai mar jaae || |
| Why serve another who is born, and then dies? |

| ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| nihafal thin kaa jeeviaa j khasam n jaanehi aapanaa avaree ko chith laae || |
| Fruitless is the life of those who do not know their Lord and Master, and who center their consciousness on others. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੇਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak eaev n jaapee karathaa kaethee dhaee sajaae ||1|| |
| O Nanak, it cannot be known, how much punishment the Creator shall inflict on them. ||1|| |

| Meditate on the True Name; the True Lord is pervading everywhere. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ॥ |
| naanak hukam bujh paravaan hoe thaa fal paavai sach || |
| O Nanak, by understanding the Hukam of the Lord's Command, one becomes acceptable, and then obtains the fruit of Truth. |

| ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੨॥ |
| kathhanee badhanee karathaa firai hukamai mool n bujhee andhhaa kach nikach ||2|| |
| He wanders around babbling and speaking, but he does not understand the Lord's Command at all. He is blind, the falsest of the false. ||2|| |

| Creating union and separation, He laid the foundations of the Universe. |

| ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| hukamee srisatt saajeean jothee joth milaaeiaa || |
| By His Command, the Lord of Light fashioned the Universe, and infused His Divine Light into it. |

| ਜੋਤੀ ਹੂੰ ਸਭੁ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jothee hoon sabh chaananaa sathigur sabadh sunaaeiaa || |
| From the Lord of Light, all light originates. The True Guru proclaims the Word of the Shabad. |

| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| brehamaa bisan mehaes thrai gun sir dhhandhhai laaeiaa || |
| Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, under the influence of the three dispositions, were put to their tasks. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| maaeiaa kaa mool rachaaeioun thureeaa sukh paaeiaa ||2|| |
| He created the root of Maya, and the peace obtained in the fourth state of consciousness. ||2|| |

| That alone is chanting, and that alone is deep meditation, which is pleasing to the True Guru. |

| sathigur kai bhaanai vaddiaaee paavai || |
| Pleasing the True Guru, glorious greatness is obtained. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
