| How rare are those who receive the Guru's Teachings. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak jis aap vaddiaaee dhaevai ||2|| |
| O Nanak, he alone receives it, whom the Lord Himself blesses with glorious greatness. ||2|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu agiaan hai bikham ath bhaaree || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is spiritual darkness; it is very difficult and such a heavy load. |

| ਪਥਰ ਪਾਪ ਬਹੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥ |
| pathhar paap bahu ladhiaa kio thareeai thaaree || |
| Loaded with so very many stones of sin, how can the boat cross over? |

| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥ |
| anadhin bhagathee rathiaa har paar outhaaree || |
| Those who are attuned to the Lord's devotional worship night and day are carried across. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| gur sabadhee man niramalaa houmai shhadd vikaaree || |
| Under the Instruction of the Guru's Shabad, one sheds egotism and corruption, and the mind becomes immaculate. |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੀ ॥੩॥ |
| har har naam dhhiaaeeai har har nisathaaree ||3|| |
| Meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; the Lord, Har, Har, is our Saving Grace. ||3|| |

| ਕਬੀਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਕੁੜਾ ਰਾਈ ਦਸਵੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| kabeer mukath dhuaaraa sankurraa raaee dhasavai bhaae || |
| O Kabeer, the gate of liberation is narrow, less than one-tenth of a mustard seed. |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਤਉ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਾ ਨਿਕਸਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| man tho maigal hoe rehaa nikasiaa kio kar jaae || |
| The mind has become as big as an elephant; how can it pass through this gate? |
|
| ਐਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੁਠਾ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ॥ |
| aisaa sathigur jae milai thuthaa karae pasaao || |
| If one meets such a True Guru, by His Pleasure, He shows His Mercy. |
|
| ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੋਕਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ |
| mukath dhuaaraa mokalaa sehajae aavo jaao ||1|| |
| Then, the gate of liberation becomes wide open, and the soul easily passes through. ||1|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਕਾ ਨਾਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| naanak mukath dhuaaraa ath neekaa naanhaa hoe s jaae || |
| O Nanak, the gate of liberation is very narrow; only the very tiny can pass through. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਚੁ ਦੇ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai man asathhool hai kio kar vich dhae jaae || |
| Through egotism, the mind has become bloated. How can it pass through? |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| eihu jeeo sadhaa mukath hai sehajae rehiaa samaae ||2|| |
| Then, this soul is liberated forever, and it remains absorbed in celestial bliss. ||2|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਕੀਤਾ ॥ |
| prabh sansaar oupaae kai vas aapanai keethaa || |
| God created the Universe, and He keeps it under His power. |
|
| ਗਣਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮੀਤਾ ॥ |
| ganathai prabhoo n paaeeai dhoojai bharameethaa || |
| God cannot be obtained by counting; the mortal wanders in doubt. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੀਤਾ ॥ |
| sathigur miliai jeevath marai bujh sach sameethaa || |
| Meeting the True Guru, one remains dead while yet alive; understanding Him, he is absorbed in the Truth. |
|
| ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲੀਤਾ ॥ |
| sabadhae houmai khoeeai har mael mileethaa || |
| Through the Word of the Shabad, egotism is eradicated, and one is united in the Lord's Union. |
|
| ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਗਸੀਤਾ ॥੪॥ |
| sabh kishh jaanai karae aap aapae vigaseethaa ||4|| |
| He knows everything, and Himself does everything; beholding His Creation, He rejoices. ||4|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵਸਿਓ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| sathigur sio chith n laaeiou naam n vasiou man aae || |
| One who has not focused his consciousness on the True Guru, and into whose mind the Naam does not come |
|
| ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਇਵੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਇ ॥ |
| dhhrig eivaehaa jeeviaa kiaa jug mehi paaeiaa aae || |
| cursed is such a life. What has he gained by coming into the world? |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਏਕ ਚਸੇ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa khottee raas hai eaek chasae mehi paaj lehi jaae || |
| Maya is false capital; in an instant, its false covering falls off. |
|
| ਹਥਹੁ ਛੁੜਕੀ ਤਨੁ ਸਿਆਹੁ ਹੋਇ ਬਦਨੁ ਜਾਇ ਕੁਮਲਾਇ ॥ |
| hathhahu shhurrakee than siaahu hoe badhan jaae kumalaae || |
| When it slips from his hand, his body turns black, and his face withers away. |
|
| ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| jin sathigur sio chith laaeiaa thinh sukh vasiaa man aae || |
| Those who focus their consciousness on the True Guru - peace comes to abide in their minds. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| har naam dhhiaavehi rang sio har naam rehae liv laae || |
| They meditate on the Name of the Lord with love; they are lovingly attuned to the Name of the Lord. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਸਉਪਿਆ ਜਿ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| naanak sathigur so dhhan soupiaa j jeea mehi rehiaa samaae || |
| O Nanak, the True Guru has bestowed upon them the wealth, which remains contained within their hearts. |
|
| ਰੰਗੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਉ ਅਗਲਾ ਵੰਨੀ ਚੜੈ ਚੜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| rang thisai ko agalaa vannee charrai charraae ||1|| |
| They are imbued with supreme love; its color increases day by day. ||1|| |

|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਈ ਨਾਗਨੀ ਜਗਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa hoee naaganee jagath rehee lapattaae || |
| Maya is a serpent, clinging to the world. |
|
| ਇਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| eis kee saevaa jo karae this hee ko fir khaae || |
| Whoever serves her, she ultimately devours. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਗਾਰੜੂ ਤਿਨਿ ਮਲਿ ਦਲਿ ਲਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| guramukh koee gaararroo thin mal dhal laaee paae || |
| The Gurmukh is a snake-charmer; he has trampled her and thrown her down, and crushed her underfoot. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak saeee oubarae j sach rehae liv laae ||2|| |
| O Nanak, they alone are saved, who remain lovingly absorbed in the True Lord. ||2|| |

| ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੁਣਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| dtaadtee karae pukaar prabhoo sunaaeisee || |
| The minstrel cries out, and God hears him. |
|
| ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧੀਰਕ ਹੋਇ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| andhar dhheerak hoe pooraa paaeisee || |
| He is comforted within his mind, and he obtains the Perfect Lord. |
|
| ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| jo dhhur likhiaa laekh sae karam kamaaeisee || |
| Whatever destiny is pre-ordained by the Lord, those are the deeds he does. |
|
| ਜਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਸਮੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| jaa hovai khasam dhaeiaal thaa mehal ghar paaeisee || |
| When the Lord and Master becomes Merciful, then one obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence as his home. |
|
| ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਵਡਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਾਇਸੀ ॥੫॥ |
| so prabh maeraa ath vaddaa guramukh maelaaeisee ||5|| |
| That God of mine is so very great; as Gurmukh, I have met Him. ||5|| |

| ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸਹੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥ |
| sabhanaa kaa sahu eaek hai sadh hee rehai hajoor || |
| There is One Lord God of all; He remains ever-present. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਮੰਨਈ ਤਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| naanak hukam n mannee thaa ghar hee andhar dhoor || |
| O Nanak, if one does not obey the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then within one's own home, the Lord seems far away. |
|
| ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭੀ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
| hukam bhee thinhaa manaaeisee jinh ko nadhar karaee || |
| They alone obey the Lord's Command, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace. |
|
| ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| hukam mann sukh paaeiaa praem suhaagan hoe ||1|| |
| Obeying His Command, one obtains peace, and becomes the happy, loving soul-bride. ||1|| |
