| One who enters a house filled with soot is blackened. |

| ਦੂਰਹੁ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਇਓ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਛੁਟਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
| dhoorahu hee thae bhaag gaeiou hai jis gur mil shhuttakee thrikuttee rae ||1|| |
| Run far away from such people! One who meets the Guru escapes from the bondage of the three dispositions. ||1|| |

| You are all-powerful, at all times; You show me the Way; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to You. |

| Riches, supernatural spiritual powers and wealth are in the palm of Your hand. O Lord, Life of the World, Master of all, infinite is Your Name. |

| madh maaeiaa kai bhaeiou baavaro har jas nehi oucharai || |
| It has gone insane with the intoxication of Maya; it does not chant the Lord's Praise. |

| ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਜਗਤ ਕਉ ਡਹਕੈ ਅਪਨੋ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰੈ ॥੧॥ |
| kar parapanch jagath ko ddehakai apano oudhar bharai ||1|| |
| Practicing deception, it tries to cheat the world, and so it fills its belly. ||1|| |

| ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਧੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਕਾਨ ਧਰੈ ॥ |
| suaan pooshh jio hoe n soodhho kehiou n kaan dhharai || |
| Like a dog's tail, it cannot be straightened; it will not listen to what I tell it. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਤ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਰੈ ॥੨॥੧॥ |

| maath pithaa bhaaee suth bandhhap ar fun grih kee naar ||1|| rehaao || |
| mother, father, siblings, children, relatives and the wife of your home. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਤਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹੋਤ ਜਬ ਨਿਆਰੇ ਟੇਰਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥ |
| than thae praan hoth jab niaarae ttaerath praeth pukaar || |
| When the soul is separated from the body, then they will cry out, calling you a ghost. |

| ਆਧ ਘਰੀ ਕੋਊ ਨਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਦੇਤ ਨਿਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| aadhh gharee kooo nehi raakhai ghar thae dhaeth nikaar ||1|| |
| No one will let you stay, for even half an hour; they drive you out of the house. ||1|| |
|
| ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਯਹ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| mrig thrisanaa jio jag rachanaa yeh dhaekhahu ridhai bichaar || |
| The created world is like an illusion, a mirage - see this, and reflect upon it in your mind. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਤ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੨॥ |

| ਅਪਨੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਸਭ ਲਾਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਦਾਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| apanae hee sukh sio sabh laagae kiaa dhaaraa kiaa meeth ||1|| rehaao || |
| Whether they are spouses or friends, all are concerned only with their own happiness. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮੇਰਉ ਮੇਰਉ ਸਭੈ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਚੀਤ ॥ |
| maero maero sabhai kehath hai hith sio baadhhiou cheeth || |
| All say, ""Mine, mine"", and attach their consciousness to you with love. |

| ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਸੰਗੀ ਨਹ ਕੋਊ ਇਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ |
| anth kaal sangee neh kooo eih acharaj hai reeth ||1|| |
| But at the very last moment, none shall go along with you. How strange are the ways of the world! ||1|| |

| ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਜਹੂ ਨਹ ਸਮਝਤ ਸਿਖ ਦੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਨੀਤ ॥ |
| man moorakh ajehoo neh samajhath sikh dhai haariou neeth || |
| The foolish mind has not yet reformed itself, although I have grown weary of continually instructing it. |

| is to live with poisonous snakes; |

| ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ |

| I have made the effort to shake them off. ||1|| |

| ਤਉ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰੀਆ ॥ |

| ਤਉ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| ਮਿਥਨ ਮੋਹਰੀਆ ॥ਅਨ ਕਉ ਮੇਰੀਆ ॥ |
| mithhan mohareeaa || an ko maereeaa || |
| False is the love of the many emotional attachments, |
|
| ਵਿਚਿ ਘੂਮਨ ਘਿਰੀਆ ॥੨॥ |
| vich ghooman ghireeaa ||2|| |
| which suck the mortal into the whirlpool of reincarnation. ||2|| |
|
| ਸਗਲ ਬਟਰੀਆ ॥ |
| sagal battareeaa || |
| All are travellers, |
|
| ਬਿਰਖ ਇਕ ਤਰੀਆ ॥ |
| birakh eik thareeaa || |
| who have gathered under the world-tree, |
|
| ਬਹੁ ਬੰਧਹਿ ਪਰੀਆ ॥੩॥ |
| bahu bandhhehi pareeaa ||3|| |
| and are bound by their many bonds. ||3|| |
