| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, filth is washed away from within. |

| ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥ |
| niramal naam vasai man aae ||2|| |
| The Immaculate Naam comes to abide within the mind. ||2|| |
|
| ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ |
| bharamae bhoolaa firai sansaar || |
| Deluded by doubt, the world wanders around. |
|
| ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੩॥ |
| mar janamai jam karae khuaar ||3|| |
| It dies, and is born again, and is ruined by the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ |
| naanak sae vaddabhaagee jin har naam dhhiaaeiaa || |
| O Nanak, very fortunate are those who meditate on the Name of the Lord. |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੮॥ |
| gur parasaadhee mann vasaaeiaa ||4||8|| |
| By Guru's Grace, they enshrine the Name within their minds. ||4||8|| |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਇ ਨ ਵਸਹਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai naavai naal virodhh hai dhue n vasehi eik thaae || |
| Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place. |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| houmai vich saevaa n hovee thaa man birathhaa jaae ||1|| |
| In egotism, selfless service cannot be performed, and so the soul goes unfulfilled. ||1|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ |
| har chaeth man maerae thoo gur kaa sabadh kamaae || |
| O my mind, think of the Lord, and practice the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨਹਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| hukam mannehi thaa har milai thaa vichahu houmai jaae || rehaao || |
| If you submit to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then you shall meet with the Lord; only then will your ego depart from within. ||Pause|| |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਸਭੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| houmai sabh sareer hai houmai oupath hoe || |
| Egotism is within all bodies; through egotism, we come to be born. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਡਾ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| houmai vaddaa gubaar hai houmai vich bujh n sakai koe ||2|| |
| Egotism is total darkness; in egotism, no one can understand anything. ||2|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai vich bhagath n hovee hukam n bujhiaa jaae || |
| In egotism, devotional worship cannot be performed, and the Hukam of the Lord's Command cannot be understood. |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਉ ਬੰਧੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੩॥ |
| houmai vich jeeo bandhh hai naam n vasai man aae ||3|| |
| In egotism, the soul is in bondage, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, does not come to abide in the mind. ||3|| |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| naanak sathagur miliai houmai gee thaa sach vasiaa man aae || |
| O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, egotism is eliminated, and then, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind|| |

| ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੯॥੧੨॥ |
| sach kamaavai sach rehai sachae saev samaae ||4||9||12|| |
| One starts practicing truth, abides in truth and by serving the True One gets absorbed in Him. ||4||9||12|| |

| There is one bed, and One Lord God. |

| guramukh har raavae sukh saagar ||1|| |
| The Gurmukh enjoys the Lord, the ocean of peace. ||1|| |

| ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮੇਲਾਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਹਉ ਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਰਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਉ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| gur pooraa maelaavai maeraa preetham ho vaar vaar aapanae guroo ko jaasaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| The Perfect Guru leads me to meet my Beloved; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to my Guru. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੇ ॥ |
| mai avagan bharapoor sareerae || |
| My body is over-flowing with corruption; |

| ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਾ ਅਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥ |
| ho kio kar milaa apanae preetham poorae ||2|| |
| how can I meet my Perfect Beloved? ||2|| |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jin gunavanthee maeraa preetham paaeiaa || |
| The virtuous ones obtain my Beloved; |
|
| ਸੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| sae mai gun naahee ho kio milaa maeree maaeiaa ||3|| |
| I do not have these virtues. How can I meet Him, O my mother? ||3|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕਾ ਉਪਾਵ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥ |
| ho kar kar thhaakaa oupaav bahuthaerae || |
| I am so tired of making all these efforts. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰੀਬ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥ |
| naanak gareeb raakhahu har maerae ||4||1|| |
| Please protect Nanak, the meek one, O my Lord. ||4||1|| |

| My Lord God is so beautiful. I do not know His worth. |

| ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ |
| ho har prabh shhodd dhoojai lobhaanee ||1|| |
| Abandoning my Lord God, I have become entangled in duality. ||1|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਰ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਉ ਇਆਣੀ ॥ |
| ho kio kar pir ko milo eiaanee || |
| How can I meet with my Husband? I don't know. |
|
| ਜੋ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਾਈ ਪਿਰ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਿਆਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jo pir bhaavai saa sohaagan saaee pir ko milai siaanee ||1|| rehaao || |
| She who pleases her Husband Lord is a happy soul-bride. She meets with her Husband Lord - she is so wise. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੋਸ ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥ |
| mai vich dhos ho kio kar pir paavaa || |
| I am filled with faults; how can I attain my Husband Lord? |

| ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਉ ਪਿਰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਾ ॥੨॥ |
| thaerae anaek piaarae ho pir chith n aavaa ||2|| |
| You have many loves, but I am not in Your thoughts, O my Husband Lord. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਸਾ ਭਲੀ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ॥ |
| jin pir raaviaa saa bhalee suhaagan || |
| She who enjoys her Husband Lord, is the good soul-bride. |
|
| ਸੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਹਾਗਣਿ ॥੩॥ |
| sae mai gun naahee ho kiaa karee dhuhaagan ||3|| |
| I don't have these virtues; what can I, the discarded bride, do? ||3|| |
|
| ਨਿਤ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ॥ |
| nith suhaagan sadhaa pir raavai || |
| The soul-bride continually, constantly enjoys her Husband Lord. |
|
| ਮੈ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ |
| mai karameheen kab hee gal laavai ||4|| |
| I have no good fortune; will He ever hold me close in His embrace? ||4|| |
|
| ਤੂ ਪਿਰੁ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਉ ਅਉਗੁਣਿਆਰਾ ॥ |
| thoo pir gunavanthaa ho aouguniaaraa || |
| You, O Husband Lord, are meritorious, while I am without merit. |
|
| ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਬਖਸਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੫॥੨॥ |
| mai niragun bakhas naanak vaechaaraa ||5||2|| |
| I am worthless; please forgive Nanak, the meek. ||5||2|| |

| Within my mind there is such a great yearning; how will I attain the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan? |

| ਹਉ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਾ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਤਗੁਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਸਮਝਾਵਾ ॥ |
| ho jaae pushhaa apanae sathagurai gur pushh man mugadhh samajhaavaa || |
| I go and ask my True Guru; with the Guru's advice, I shall teach my foolish mind. |

| ਭੂਲਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਏ ॥ |
| bhoolaa man samajhai gur sabadhee har har sadhaa dhhiaaeae || |
| The foolish mind is instructed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and meditates forever on the Lord, Har, Har. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak jis nadhar karae maeraa piaaraa so har charanee chith laaeae ||1|| |
| O Nanak, one who is blessed with the Mercy of my Beloved, focuses his consciousness on the Lord's Feet. ||1|| |

| ਹਉ ਸਭਿ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੀ ਪਿਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਾ ॥ |
| ho sabh vaes karee pir kaaran jae har prabh saachae bhaavaa || |
| I dress myself in all sorts of robes for my Husband, so that my True Lord God will be pleased. |

| ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥ |
| so pir piaaraa mai nadhar n dhaekhai ho kio kar dhheeraj paavaa || |
| But my Beloved Husband Lord does not even cast a glance in my direction; how can I be consoled? |
