| houmai jalathae jal mueae bhram aaeae dhoojai bhaae || |
| In the flames of egotism, he is burnt to death; he wanders in doubt and the love of duality. |

| ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਆਪਣੈ ਪੰਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| poorai sathigur raakh leeeae aapanai pannai paae || |
| The Perfect True Guru saves him, making him His own. |

| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਲਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ |
| eihu jag jalathaa nadharee aaeiaa gur kai sabadh subhaae || |
| This world is burning; through the Sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad, this comes to be seen. |

| ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ |

| Those who are attuned to the Shabad are cooled and soothed; O Nanak, they practice Truth. ||1|| |

| safaliou sathigur saeviaa dhhann janam paravaan || |
| Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding; blessed and acceptable is such a life. |

| ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮੁਇਆ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਜਾਣ ॥ |
| jinaa sathigur jeevadhiaa mueiaa n visarai saeee purakh sujaan || |
| Those who do not forget the True Guru, in life and in death, are truly wise people. |

| ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ |

| Their families are saved, and they are approved by the Lord. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਜੀਵਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਾਹਿ ॥ |
| guramukh mueae jeevadhae paravaan hehi manamukh janam maraahi || |
| The Gurmukhs are approved in death as in life, while the self-willed manmukhs continue the cycle of birth and death. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਏ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ |

| Serve the Immaculate Lord God, and meditate on the Lord's Name. |

| sathasangath saadhhoo lag har naam samaaeeai || |
| Join the Society of the Holy Saints, and be absorbed in the Lord's Name. |

| ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਲਾਈਐ ॥ |
| har thaeree vaddee kaar mai moorakh laaeeai || |
| O Lord, glorious and great is service to You; I am so foolish |

| ਹਉ ਗੋਲਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਮੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈਐ ॥ |
| ho golaa laalaa thudhh mai hukam furamaaeeai || |
| - please, commit me to it. I am Your servant and slave; command me, according to Your Will. |

| He acts according to pre-ordained destiny, written by the Creator Himself. |

| ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ |
| moh thagoulee paaeean visariaa gunathaas || |
| Emotional attachment has drugged him, and he has forgotten the Lord, the treasure of virtue. |

| ਮਤੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵਦਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮੁਇਆਸੁ ॥ |
| math jaanahu jag jeevadhaa dhoojai bhaae mueiaas || |
| Don't think that he is alive in the world - he is dead, through the love of duality. |

| ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ |
| jinee guramukh naam n chaethiou sae behan n milanee paas || |
| Those who do not meditate on the Lord, as Gurmukh, are not permitted to sit near the Lord. |

| ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਘਣਾ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਸਿ ॥ |
| dhukh laagaa bahu ath ghanaa puth kalath n saathh koee jaas || |
| They suffer the most horrible pain and suffering, and neither their sons nor their wives go along with them. |

| ਲੋਕਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਭੇ ਸਾਸ ॥ |
| lokaa vich muhu kaalaa hoaa andhar oubhae saas || |
| Their faces are blackened among men, and they sigh in deep regret. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਵਿਸਹੀ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਸਾਸੁ ॥ |
| manamukhaa no ko n visehee chuk gaeiaa vaesaas || |
| No one places any reliance in the self-willed manmukhs; trust in them is lost. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak guramukhaa no sukh agalaa jinaa anthar naam nivaas ||1|| |
| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs live in absolute peace; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides within them. ||1|| |

| They alone are relatives, and they alone are friends, who, as Gurmukh, join together in love. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| sathigur kaa bhaanaa anadhin karehi sae sach rehae samaae || |
| Night and day, they act according to the True Guru's Will; they remain absorbed in the True Name. |

| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਸਜਣ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae lagae sajan n aakheeahi j abhimaan karehi vaekaar || |
| Those who are attached to the love of duality are not called friends; they practice egotism and corruption. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ |
| manamukh aap suaarathhee kaaraj n sakehi savaar || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are selfish; they cannot resolve anyone's affairs. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa koe n maettanehaar ||2|| |
| O Nanak, they act according to their pre-ordained destiny; no one can erase it. ||2|| |

| You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself arranged the play of it. |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thrai gun aap sirajiaa maaeiaa mohu vadhhaaeiaa || |
| You Yourself created the three qualities, and fostered emotional attachment to Maya. |

| ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇਆ ॥ |
| vich houmai laekhaa mangeeai fir aavai jaaeiaa || |
| He is called to account for his deeds done in egotism; he continues coming and going in reincarnation. |

| ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jinaa har aap kirapaa karae sae gur samajhaaeiaa || |
| The Guru instructs those whom the Lord Himself blesses with Grace. |

| ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਘੁਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| balihaaree gur aapanae sadhaa sadhaa ghumaaeiaa ||3|| |
| I am a sacrifice to my Guru; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||3|| |

| maaeiaa mamathaa mohanee jin vin dhanthaa jag khaaeiaa || |
| The love of Maya is enticing; without teeth, it has eaten up the world. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| manamukh khaadhhae guramukh oubarae jinee sach naam chith laaeiaa || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are eaten away, while the Gurmukhs are saved; they focus their consciousness on the True Name. |

| ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhhandhhaa karathiaa nihafal janam gavaaeiaa sukhadhaathaa man n vasaaeiaa || |
| Involved in worldly affairs, he wastes his life in vain; the peace-giving Lord does not come to abide in his mind. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak naam thinaa ko miliaa jin ko dhhur likh paaeiaa ||1|| |
| O Nanak, they alone obtain the Name, who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1|| |

| ghar hee mehi anmrith bharapoor hai manamukhaa saadh n paaeiaa || |
| The home within is filled with Ambrosial Nectar, but the self-willed manmukh does not get to taste it. |

| ਜਿਉ ਕਸਤੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਦਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jio kasathooree mirag n jaanai bhramadhaa bharam bhulaaeiaa || |
| He is like the deer, who does not recognize its own musk-scent; it wanders around, deluded by doubt. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਜਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥ |
| anmrith thaj bikh sangrehai karathai aap khuaaeiaa || |
| The manmukh forsakes the Ambrosial Nectar, and instead gathers poison; the Creator Himself has fooled him. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਤਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ |
| guramukh viralae sojhee pee thinaa andhar breham dhikhaaeiaa || |
| How rare are the Gurmukhs, who obtain this understanding; they behold the Lord God within themselves. |
