| maaeiaa mohu maerai prabh keenaa aapae bharam bhulaaeae || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is created by my God; He Himself misleads us through illusion and doubt. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |
| manamukh karam karehi nehee boojhehi birathhaa janam gavaaeae || |
| The self-willed manmukhs perform their actions, but they do not understand; they waste away their lives in vain. |

| ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥੧॥ |

| Gurbani is the Light to illuminate this world; by His Grace, it comes to abide within the mind. ||1|| |

| O mind, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and find peace. |

| Praising the Perfect Guru, you shall easily meet with that God. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| bharam gaeiaa bho bhaagiaa har charanee chith laae || |
| Doubt departs, and fear runs away, when you focus your consciousness on the Lord's Feet. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| guramukh sabadh kamaaeeai har vasai man aae || |
| The Gurmukh practices the Shabad, and the Lord comes to dwell within the mind. |

| ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| ghar mehal sach samaaeeai jamakaal n sakai khaae ||2|| |
| In the mansion of the home within the self, we merge in Truth, and the Messenger of Death cannot devour us. ||2|| |

| ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਬਾ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਜ+ਲਾਹਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| naamaa shheebaa kabeer juolaahaa poorae gur thae gath paaee || |
| Naam Dayv the printer, and Kabeer the weaver, obtained salvation through the Perfect Guru. |

| ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਬੇਤੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ |
| breham kae baethae sabadh pashhaanehi houmai jaath gavaaee || |
| Those who know God and recognize His Shabad lose their ego and class consciousness. |

| ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| sur nar thin kee baanee gaavehi koe n maettai bhaaee ||3|| |
| Their Banis are sung by the angelic beings, and no one can erase them, O Siblings of Destiny! ||3|| |

| ਦੈਤ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਨ ਪੜੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| dhaith puth karam dhharam kishh sanjam n parrai dhoojaa bhaao n jaanai || |
| The demon's son Prahlaad had not read about religious rituals or ceremonies, austerity or self-discipline; he did not know the love of duality. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਐ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ |
| sathigur bhaettiai niramal hoaa anadhin naam vakhaanai || |
| Upon meeting with the True Guru, he became pure; night and day, he chanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਏਕੋ ਪੜੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਬੂਝੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੪॥ |
| eaeko parrai eaeko naao boojhai dhoojaa avar n jaanai ||4|| |
| He read only of the One and he understood only the One Name; he knew no other at all. ||4|| |

| ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥ |
| khatt dharasan jogee sanniaasee bin gur bharam bhulaaeae || |
| The followers of the six different life-styles and world-views, the Yogis and the Sanyaasees have gone astray in doubt without the Guru. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur saevehi thaa gath mith paavehi har jeeo mann vasaaeae || |
| If they serve the True Guru, they find the state of salvation; they enshrine the Dear Lord within their minds. |

| ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥੫॥ |
| sachee baanee sio chith laagai aavan jaan rehaaeae ||5|| |
| They focus their consciousness on the True Bani, and their comings and goings in reincarnation are over. ||5|| |

| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥ |
| panddith parr parr vaadh vakhaanehi bin gur bharam bhulaaeae || |
| The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and argue and stir up controversies, but without the Guru, they are deluded by doubt. |

| ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| lakh chouraaseeh faer paeiaa bin sabadhai mukath n paaeae || |
| They wander around the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations; without the Shabad, they do not attain liberation. |

| ਜਾ ਨਾਉ ਚੇਤੈ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥ |
| jaa naao chaethai thaa gath paaeae jaa sathigur mael milaaeae ||6|| |
| But when they remember the Name, then they attain the state of salvation, when the True Guru unites them in Union. ||6|| |

| ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ਚਲਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ॥ |
| man than arapee aap gavaaee chalaa sathigur bhaaeae || |
| I offer my mind and body, and I renounce my selfishness and conceit; I walk in Harmony with the Will of the True Guru. |

| ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| sadh balihaaree gur apunae vittahu j har saethee chith laaeae ||7|| |
| I am forever a sacrifice to my Guru, who has attached my consciousness to the Lord. ||7|| |

| ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜੋ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ |
| so braahaman breham jo bindhae har saethee rang raathaa || |
| He alone is a Brahmin, who knows the Lord Brahma, and is attuned to the Love of the Lord. |

| ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਨਾ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ |
| prabh nikatt vasai sabhanaa ghatt anthar guramukh viralai jaathaa || |
| God is close at hand; He dwells deep within the hearts of all. How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, know Him. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੮॥੫॥੨੨॥ |
| naanak naam milai vaddiaaee gur kai sabadh pashhaathaa ||8||5||22|| |
| O Nanak, through the Naam, greatness is obtained; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized. ||8||5||22|| |

| Everyone longs to be centered and balanced, but without the Guru, no one can. |

| ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਥਕੇ ਭੇਖੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ |
| parr parr panddith jothakee thhakae bhaekhee bharam bhulaaeae || |
| The Pandits and the astrologers read and read until they grow weary, while the fanatics are deluded by doubt. |

| ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| gur bhaettae sehaj paaeiaa aapanee kirapaa karae rajaae ||1|| |
| Meeting with the Guru, intuitive balance is obtained, when God, in His Will, grants His Grace. ||1|| |

| ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| bhaaee rae gur bin sehaj n hoe || |
| O Siblings of Destiny, without the Guru, intuitive balance is not obtained. |

| ਸਬਦੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sabadhai hee thae sehaj oopajai har paaeiaa sach soe ||1|| rehaao || |
| Through the Word of the Shabad, intuitive peace and poise wells up, and that True Lord is obtained. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਗਾਵਿਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਜੈ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਾਦਿ ॥ |
| sehajae gaaviaa thhaae pavai bin sehajai kathhanee baadh || |
| That which is sung intuitively is acceptable; without this intuition, all chanting is useless. |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ॥ |
| sehajae hee bhagath oopajai sehaj piaar bairaag || |
| In the state of intuitive balance, devotion wells up. In intuitive balance, love is balanced and detached. |

| ਸਹਜੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਜੈ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਾਦਿ ॥੨॥ |
| sehajai hee thae sukh saath hoe bin sehajai jeevan baadh ||2|| |
| In the state of intuitive balance, peace and tranquility are produced. Without intuitive balance, life is useless. ||2|| |

| ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇ ॥ |
| sehaj saalaahee sadhaa sadhaa sehaj samaadhh lagaae || |
| In the state of intuitive balance, praise the Lord forever and ever. With intuitive ease, embrace Samaadhi. |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਊਚਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| sehajae hee gun oocharai bhagath karae liv laae || |
| In the state of intuitive balance, chant His Glories, lovingly absorbed in devotional worship. |

| ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| sabadhae hee har man vasai rasanaa har ras khaae ||3|| |
| Through the Shabad, the Lord dwells within the mind, and the tongue tastes the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3|| |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਵਿਡਾਰਿਆ ਸਚ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| sehajae kaal viddaariaa sach saranaaee paae || |
| In the poise of intuitive balance, death is destroyed, entering the Sanctuary of the True One. |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ |
| sehajae har naam man vasiaa sachee kaar kamaae || |
| Intuitively balanced, the Name of the Lord dwells within the mind, practicing the lifestyle of Truth. |

| ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥ |
| sae vaddabhaagee jinee paaeiaa sehajae rehae samaae ||4|| |
| Those who have found Him are very fortunate; they remain intuitively absorbed in Him. ||4|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa vich sehaj n oopajai maaeiaa dhoojai bhaae || |
| Within Maya, the poise of intuitive balance is not produced. Maya leads to the love of duality. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਲੈ ਜਲਾਇ ॥ |
| manamukh karam kamaavanae houmai jalai jalaae || |
| The self-willed manmukhs perform religious rituals, but they are burnt down by their selfishness and conceit. |

| ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥ |
| janman maran n chookee fir fir aavai jaae ||5|| |
| Their births and deaths do not cease; over and over again, they come and go in reincarnation. ||5|| |

| ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ |
| thrihu gunaa vich sehaj n paaeeai thrai gun bharam bhulaae || |
| In the three qualities, intuitive balance is not obtained; the three qualities lead to delusion and doubt. |

| ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਘੁਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| parreeai guneeai kiaa kathheeai jaa mundtahu ghuthhaa jaae || |
| What is the point of reading, studying and debating, if one loses his roots? |

| ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥ |
| chouthhae padh mehi sehaj hai guramukh palai paae ||6|| |
| In the fourth state, there is intuitive balance; the Gurmukhs gather it in. ||6|| |

| ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| niragun naam nidhhaan hai sehajae sojhee hoe || |
| The Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord, is the treasure. Through intuitive balance, understanding is obtained. |
