| ਹਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਮੀ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ |
| ham aadhamee haan eik dhamee muhalath muhath n jaanaa || |
| We are human beings of the briefest moment; we do not know the appointed time of our departure. |

| naanak binavai thisai saraevahu jaa kae jeea paraanaa ||1|| |
| Prays Nanak, serve the One, to whom our soul and breath of life belong. ||1|| |

| ਅੰਧੇ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇ ਦਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| andhhae jeevanaa veechaar dhaekh kaethae kae dhinaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| You are blind - see and consider, how many days your life shall last. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ |
| saas maas sabh jeeo thumaaraa thoo mai kharaa piaaraa || |
| My breath, my flesh and my soul are all Yours, Lord; You are so very dear to me. |

| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਏਵ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak saaeir eaev kehath hai sachae paravadhagaaraa ||2|| |
| Nanak, the poet, says this, O True Lord Cherisher. ||2|| |

| ਜੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਢੈ ਗਹਣਾ ॥ |
| jae thoo kisai n dhaehee maerae saahibaa kiaa ko kadtai gehanaa || |
| If you gave nothing, O my Lord and Master, what could anyone pledge to You? |

| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਣਾ ॥੩॥ |
| naanak binavai so kishh paaeeai purab likhae kaa lehanaa ||3|| |
| Nanak prays, we receive that which we are pre-destined to receive. ||3|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਪਟੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥ |
| naam khasam kaa chith n keeaa kapattee kapatt kamaanaa || |
| The deceitful person does not remember the Lord's Name; he practices only deceit. |

| ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਰਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥ |
| jab lag dhuneeaa reheeai naanak kishh suneeai kishh keheeai || |
| As long as we are in this world, O Nanak, we should listen, and speak of the Lord. |

| ਭਾਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੫॥੨॥ |

| I have searched, but I have found no way to remain here; so, remain dead while yet alive. ||5||2|| |

| How can I remember the Lord in meditation? I cannot meditate on Him in remembrance. |

| My heart is burning, and my soul is crying out in pain. |

| ਸਿਰਜਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| siraj savaarae saachaa soe || |
| The True Lord creates and adorns. |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ |

| Forgetting Him, how can one be good? ||1|| |

| ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| By clever tricks and commands, He cannot be found. |

| ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| kio kar saach milo maeree maae ||1|| rehaao || |
| How am I to meet my True Lord, O my mother? ||1||Pause|| |

| ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| vakhar naam dhaekhan koee jaae || |
| How rare is the one who goes out, and searches for the merchandise of the Naam. |
|
| ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਾਖੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| naa ko chaakhai naa ko khaae || |
| No one tastes it, and no one eats it. |
|
| ਲੋਕਿ ਪਤੀਣੈ ਨਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| lok patheenai naa path hoe || |
| Honor is not obtained by trying to please other people. |
|
| ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| thaa path rehai raakhai jaa soe ||2|| |
| One's honor is preserved, only if the Lord preserves it. ||2|| |

| ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| jeh dhaekhaa theh rehiaa samaae || |
| Wherever I look, there I see Him, pervading and permeating. |
|
| ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| thudhh bin dhoojee naahee jaae || |
| Without You, I have no other place of rest. |
|
| ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਕੀਤੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| jae ko karae keethai kiaa hoe || |
| He may try, but what can anyone do by his own doing? |

| ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
| jis no bakhasae saachaa soe ||3|| |
| He alone is blessed, whom the True Lord forgives. ||3|| |

| ਹੁਣਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਤਾਲਿ ॥ |

| Now, I shall have to get up and depart, in an instant, in the clapping of hands. |

| ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਸਾ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ |
| kiaa muhu dhaesaa gun nehee naal || |
| What face will I show the Lord? I have no virtue at all. |

| ਜੈਸੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| jaisee nadhar karae thaisaa hoe || |
| As is the Lord's Glance of Grace, so it is. |
|
| ਵਿਣੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥ |
| vin nadharee naanak nehee koe ||4||1||3|| |
| Without His Glance of Grace, O Nanak, no one is blessed. ||4||1||3|| |

| If the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then one remembers Him in meditation. |

| ਆਤਮਾ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| aathamaa dhravai rehai liv laae || |
| The soul is softened, and he remains absorbed in the Lord's Love. |
|
| ਆਤਮਾ ਪਰਾਤਮਾ ਏਕੋ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| aathamaa paraathamaa eaeko karai || |
| His soul and the Supreme Soul become one. |
|
| ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੧॥ |
| anthar kee dhubidhhaa anthar marai ||1|| |
| The duality of the inner mind is overcome. ||1|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee paaeiaa jaae || |
| By Guru's Grace, God is found. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| har sio chith laagai fir kaal n khaae ||1|| rehaao || |
| One's consciousness is attached to the Lord, and so Death does not devour him. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਸਚਿ ਸਿਮਰਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ |
| sach simariai hovai paragaas || |
| Remembering the True Lord in meditation, one is enlightened. |
|
| ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥ |
| thaa thae bikhiaa mehi rehai oudhaas || |
| Then, in the midst of Maya, he remains detached. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਐਸੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ |
| sathigur kee aisee vaddiaaee || |
| Such is the Glory of the True Guru; |
|
| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| puthr kalathr vichae gath paaee ||2|| |
| in the midst of children and spouses, they attain emancipation. ||2|| |
|
| ਐਸੀ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| aisee saevak saevaa karai || |
| Such is the service which the Lord's servant performs, |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਧਰੈ ॥ |
| jis kaa jeeo this aagai dhharai || |
| that he dedicates his soul to the Lord, to whom it belongs. |
|
| ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ |
| saahib bhaavai so paravaan || |
| One who is pleasing to the Lord and Master is acceptable. |
|
| ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੩॥ |
| so saevak dharageh paavai maan ||3|| |
| Such a servant obtains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur kee moorath hiradhai vasaaeae || |
| He enshrines the image of the True Guru in his heart. |
|
| ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| jo eishhai soee fal paaeae || |
| He obtains the rewards which he desires. |
|
| ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| saachaa saahib kirapaa karai || |
| The True Lord and Master grants His Grace; |
|
| ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕੈਸਾ ਡਰੈ ॥੪॥ |
| so saevak jam thae kaisaa ddarai ||4|| |
| how can such a servant be afraid of death? ||4|| |
