| ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| saachee baanee sio dhharae piaar || |
| and enshrine love for the True Word of His Bani. |

| ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ |
| thaa ko paavai mokh dhuaar || |
| Then, you shall find the Gate of Salvation. |
 |
| ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੫॥੨॥੪॥ |
| jap thap sabh eihu sabadh hai saar ||5||2||4|| |
| This Shabad is the most excellent of all chanting and austere meditations. ||5||2||4|| |

| Dhanaasaree, First Mehl: |

| ਜੀਉ ਤਪਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥ |
| jeeo thapath hai baaro baar || |
| My soul burns, over and over again. |
 |
| ਤਪਿ ਤਪਿ ਖਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬੇਕਾਰ ॥ |
| thap thap khapai bahuth baekaar || |
| Burning and burning, it is ruined, and it falls into evil. |
 |
| ਜੈ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| jai than baanee visar jaae || |
| That body, which forgets the Word of the Guru's Bani |
 |
| ਜਿਉ ਪਕਾ ਰੋਗੀ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| jio pakaa rogee vilalaae ||1|| |
| cries out in pain, like a chronic patient. ||1|| |

| ਬਹੁਤਾ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| bahuthaa bolan jhakhan hoe || |
| To speak too much and babble is useless. |
 |
| ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| vin bolae jaanai sabh soe ||1|| rehaao || |
| Even without our speaking, He knows everything. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਕਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਖੀ ਨਾਕੁ ॥ |
| jin kan keethae akhee naak || |
| He created our ears, eyes and nose. |
 |
| ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| jin man raakhiaa aganee paae || |
| He preserved the mind in the fire of the womb; |
 |
| ਵਾਜੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਆਖੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| vaajai pavan aakhai sabh jaae ||2|| |
| at His Command, the wind blows everywhere. ||2|| |

| ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਆਦ ॥ |
| jaethaa mohu pareeth suaadh || |
| These worldly attachments, loves and pleasurable tastes, |
 |
| ਸਭਾ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗਾ ਦਾਗ ॥ |
| sabhaa kaalakh dhaagaa dhaag || |
| all are just black stains. |
 |
| ਦਾਗ ਦੋਸ ਮੁਹਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| dhaag dhos muhi chaliaa laae || |
| One who departs, with these black stains of sin on his face |
 |
| ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| dharageh baisan naahee jaae ||3|| |
| shall find no place to sit in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| |
 |
| ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਖਣੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ |
| karam milai aakhan thaeraa naao || |
| By Your Grace, we chant Your Name. |
 |
| ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਣਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥ |
| jith lag tharanaa hor nehee thhaao || |
| Becoming attached to it, one is saved; there is no other way. |
 |
| ਜੇ ਕੋ ਡੂਬੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਰ ॥ |
| jae ko ddoobai fir hovai saar || |
| Even if one is drowning, still, he may be saved. |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਰਬ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥ |

| O Nanak, the True Lord is the Giver of all. ||4||3||5|| |

| If a thief praises someone, his mind is not pleased. |
 |
| ਜੇ ਬਦੀ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਤਸੂ ਨ ਛੀਜੈ ॥ |
| jae badhee karae thaa thasoo n shheejai || |
| If a thief curses him, no damage is done. |
 |
| ਚੋਰ ਕੀ ਹਾਮਾ ਭਰੇ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| chor kee haamaa bharae n koe || |
| No one will take responsibility for a thief. |
 |
| ਚੋਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| chor keeaa changaa kio hoe ||1|| |
| How can a thief's actions be good? ||1|| |

| ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਕੁਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥ |
| sun man andhhae kuthae koorriaar || |
| Listen, O mind, you blind, false dog! |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bin bolae boojheeai sachiaar ||1|| rehaao || |
| Even without your speaking, the Lord knows and understands. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਚੋਰੁ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥ |
| chor suaalio chor siaanaa || |
| A thief may be handsome, and a thief may be wise, |
 |
| ਖੋਟੇ ਕਾ ਮੁਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਦੁਗਾਣਾ ॥ |
| khottae kaa mul eaek dhugaanaa || |
| but he is still just a counterfeit coin, worth only a shell. |
 |
| ਜੇ ਸਾਥਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਜੈ ਰਲਾਇ ॥ |
| jae saathh rakheeai dheejai ralaae || |
| If it is kept and mixed with other coins, |
 |
| ਜਾ ਪਰਖੀਐ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| jaa parakheeai khottaa hoe jaae ||2|| |
| it will be found to be false, when the coins are inspected. ||2|| |
 |
| ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| jaisaa karae s thaisaa paavai || |
| As one acts, so does he receive. |
 |
| ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਵੈ ॥ |
| aap beej aapae hee khaavai || |
| As he plants, so does he eat. |
 |
| ਜੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| jae vaddiaaeeaa aapae khaae || |
| He may praise himself gloriously, |
 |
| ਜੇਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤੇਹੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| jaehee surath thaehai raahi jaae ||3|| |
| but still, according to his understanding, so is the path he must follow. ||3|| |
 |
| ਜੇ ਸਉ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਬਾੜੁ ॥ |
| jae so koorreeaa koorr kabaarr || |
| He may tell hundreds of lies to conceal his falsehood, |
 |
| ਭਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਖਉ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ |
| bhaavai sabh aakho sansaar || |
| and all the world may call him good. |
 |
| ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਅਧੀ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ |
| thudhh bhaavai adhhee paravaan || |
| If it pleases You, Lord, even the foolish are approved. |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੪॥੬॥ |
| naanak jaanai jaan sujaan ||4||4||6|| |
| O Nanak, the Lord is wise, knowing, all-knowing. ||4||4||6|| |

| ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ॥ |
| kaaeiaa kaagadh man paravaanaa || |
| The body is the paper, and the mind is the inscription written upon it. |

| ਸਿਰ ਕੇ ਲੇਖ ਨ ਪੜੈ ਇਆਣਾ ॥ |
| sir kae laekh n parrai eiaanaa || |
| The ignorant fool does not read what is written on his forehead. |
 |
| ਦਰਗਹ ਘੜੀਅਹਿ ਤੀਨੇ ਲੇਖ ॥ |
| dharageh gharreeahi theenae laekh || |
| In the Court of the Lord, three inscriptions are recorded. |
 |
| ਖੋਟਾ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੧॥ |
| khottaa kaam n aavai vaekh ||1|| |
| Behold, the counterfeit coin is worthless there. ||1|| |
 |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੁਪਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| naanak jae vich rupaa hoe || |
| O Nanak, if there is silver in it, |
 |
| ਖਰਾ ਖਰਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| kharaa kharaa aakhai sabh koe ||1|| rehaao || |
| then everyone proclaims, ""It is genuine, it is genuine.""||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਾਦੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| kaadhee koorr bol mal khaae || |
| The Qazi tells lies and eats filth; |
 |
| ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਆ ਘਾਇ ॥ |
| braahaman naavai jeeaa ghaae || |
| the Brahmin kills and then takes cleansing baths. |
 |
| ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥ |
| jogee jugath n jaanai andhh || |
| The Yogi is blind, and does not know the Way. |
