| As long as the light remains in the body, the beast does not understand himself. |

| ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਚਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੨॥ |
| laalach karai jeevan padh kaaran lochan kashhoo n soojhai ||2|| |
| He acts in greed to maintain his life and status, and sees nothing with his eyes. ||2|| |

| ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਮਾ ॥ |

| Says Kabeer, listen, O mortal: Renounce the doubts of your mind. |

| ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਪਰਹੁ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਂ ॥੩॥੨॥ |
| kaeval naam japahu rae praanee parahu eaek kee saranaan ||3||2|| |
| Chant only the One Naam, the Name of the Lord, O mortal, and seek the Sanctuary of the One Lord. ||3||2|| |

| ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਕਾਹੋ ॥ |
| jo jan bhaao bhagath kashh jaanai thaa ko acharaj kaaho || |
| That humble being, who knows even a little about loving devotional worship - what surprises are there for him? |

| ਜਿਉ ਜਲੁ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਪੈਸਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਤਿਉ ਢੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜੁਲਾਹੋ ॥੧॥ |
| jio jal jal mehi pais n nikasai thio dtur miliou julaaho ||1|| |
| Like water, dripping into water, which cannot be separated out again, so is the weaver Kabeer, with softened heart, merged into the Lord. ||1|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗਾ ਮੈ ਤਉ ਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਭੋਰਾ ॥ |
| har kae logaa mai tho math kaa bhoraa || |
| O people of the Lord, I am just a simple-minded fool. |

| ਜਉ ਤਨੁ ਕਾਸੀ ਤਜਹਿ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਰਮਈਐ ਕਹਾ ਨਿਹੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jo than kaasee thajehi kabeeraa rameeai kehaa nihoraa ||1|| rehaao || |
| If Kabeer were to leave his body at Benares, and so liberate himself, what obligation would he have to the Lord? ||1||Pause|| |

| kiaa kaasee kiaa ookhar magehar raam ridhai jo hoee ||2||3|| |
| What is the difference between Benares and the barren land of Maghar, if the Lord is within one's heart? ||2||3|| |
|
| ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਸਿਵ ਲੋਕਹਿ ਜੈਬੋ ॥ |
| eindhr lok siv lokehi jaibo || |
| Mortals may go to the Realm of Indra, or the Realm of Shiva, |
|
| ਓਛੇ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਹੁਰਿ ਐਬੋ ॥੧॥ |
| oushhae thap kar baahur aibo ||1|| |
| but because of their hypocrisy and false prayers, they must leave again. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| kiaa maango kishh thhir naahee || |
| What should I ask for? Nothing lasts forever. |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| Fame and glory, power, wealth and glorious greatness |

| - none of these will go with you or help you in the end. ||2|| |

| Children, spouse, wealth and Maya |

| ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹੁ ਕਵਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| ein thae kahu kavanai sukh paaeiaa ||3|| |
| - who has ever obtained peace from these? ||3|| |
|
| ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮਾ ॥ |
| kehath kabeer avar nehee kaamaa || |
| Says Kabeer, nothing else is of any use. |

| Within my mind is the wealth of the Lord's Name. ||4||4|| |

| Your spouse, children, body, house and possessions - you think these will give you peace. |

| ਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਲ ਅਵਧ ਆਈ ॥੧॥ |

| But none of these shall be yours, when the time of death comes. ||1|| |

| ਅਜਾਮਲ ਗਜ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਪਤਿਤ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਨੇ ॥ |
| ajaamal gaj ganikaa pathith karam keenae || |
| Ajaamal, the elephant, and the prostitute committed many sins, |
|
| ਤੇਊ ਉਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲੀਨੇ ॥੨॥ |
| thaeoo outhar paar parae raam naam leenae ||2|| |
| but still, they crossed over the world-ocean, by chanting the Lord's Name. ||2|| |

| ਸੂਕਰ ਕੂਕਰ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਤਊ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਆਈ ॥ |
| sookar kookar jon bhramae thoo laaj n aaee || |
| You have wandered in reincarnation, as pigs and dogs - did you feel no shame? |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਛਾਡਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| raam naam shhaadd anmrith kaahae bikh khaaee ||3|| |
| Forsaking the Ambrosial Name of the Lord, why do you eat poison? ||3|| |

| ਤਜਿ ਭਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਿਖੇਧ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹੀ ॥ |
| thaj bharam karam bidhh nikhaedhh raam naam laehee || |
| Abandon your doubts about do's and dont's, and take to the Lord's Name. |

| maarakanddae thae ko adhhikaaee jin thrin dhhar moondd balaaeae ||1|| |
| Can anyone live longer than Markanda, who passed his days with only a handful of straw upon his head? ||1|| |

| The Creator Lord is our only friend. |

| The Kaurvas, who had brothers like Duryodhan, used to proclaim, ""This is ours! This is ours!"" |

| ਬਾਰਹ ਜੋਜਨ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਚਲੈ ਥਾ ਦੇਹੀ ਗਿਰਝਨ ਖਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| baareh jojan shhathra chalai thhaa dhaehee girajhan khaaee ||2|| |
| Their royal procession extended over sixty miles, and yet their bodies were eaten by vultures. ||2|| |

| ਸਰਬ ਸ+ਇਨ ਕੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਹੋਤੀ ਰਾਵਨ ਸੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥ |

| Sri Lanka was totally rich with gold; was anyone greater than its ruler Raavan? |

| What happened to the elephants, tethered at his gate? In an instant, it all belonged to someone else. ||3|| |

| ਦੁਰਬਾਸਾ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਤ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਜਾਦਵ ਏ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ॥ |

| The Yaadvas deceived Durbaasaa, and received their rewards. |

| ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਊਪਰ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥੧॥ |
| kirapaa karee jan apunae oopar naamadhaeo har gun gaaeae ||4||1|| |
| The Lord has shown mercy to His humble servant, and now Naam Dayv sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||1|| |

| ਦਸ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਪੰਚਹੁ ਕਾ ਮਿਟ ਨਾਵਉ ॥ |
| dhas bairaagan mohi bas keenhee panchahu kaa mitt naavo || |
| I have brought the ten sensory organs under my control, and erased every trace of the five thieves. |

| ਸਤਰਿ ਦੋਇ ਭਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਉ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ |
| sathar dhoe bharae anmrith sar bikh ko maar kadtaavo ||1|| |
| I have filled the seventy-two thousand nerve channels with Ambrosial Nectar, and drained out the poison. ||1|| |
|
| ਪਾਛੈ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਨੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥ |
| paashhai bahur n aavan paavo || |
| I shall not come into the world again. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਘਟ ਤੇ ਉਚਰਉ ਆਤਮ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| I chant the Ambrosial Bani of the Word from the depths of my heart, and I have instructed my soul. ||1||Pause|| |

| I fell at the Guru's feet and begged of Him; with the mighty axe, I have chopped off emotional attachment. |

| Turning away from the world, I have become the servant of the Saints; I fear no one except the Lord's devotees. ||2|| |

| ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਛੂਟਉ ਜਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਹ ਲਪਟਾਵਉ ॥ |

| I shall be released from this world, when I stop clinging to Maya. |

| Maya is the name of the power which causes us to be born; renouncing it, we obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||3|| |
