| ਧਾਇਓ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਇਓ ॥ |
| dhhaaeiou rae man dheh dhis dhhaaeiou || |
| The mind wanders, wandering in the ten directions. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨ ਸੁਆਦਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਓ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| maaeiaa magan suaadh lobh mohiou thin prabh aap bhulaaeiou || rehaao || |
| It is intoxicated by Maya, enticed by the taste of greed. God Himself has deluded it. ||Pause|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਇਕੁ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇਓ ॥ |
| har kathhaa har jas saadhhasangath sio eik muhath n eihu man laaeiou || |
| He does not focus his mind, even for a moment, on the Lord's sermon, or the Lord's Praises, or the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. |

| ਬਿਗਸਿਓ ਪੇਖਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਕੋ ਪਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜੋਹਨਿ ਜਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ |
| bigasiou paekh rang kasunbh ko par grih johan jaaeiou ||1|| |
| He is excited, gazing on the transitory color of the safflower, and looking at other men's wives. ||1|| |
|
| ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਨਹ ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਨਾਇਓ ॥ |
| charan kamal sio bhaao n keeno neh sath purakh manaaeiou || |
| He does not love the Lord's lotus feet, and he does not please the True Lord. |
|
| ਧਾਵਤ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਲੀ ਬਲਦੁ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਇਓ ॥੨॥ |
| dhhaavath ko dhhaavehi bahu bhaathee jio thaelee baladh bhramaaeiou ||2|| |
| He runs around chasing the fleeting objects of the world, in all directions, like the ox around the oil press. ||2|| |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਕੀਓ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਇਓ ॥ |
| naam dhaan eisanaan n keeou eik nimakh n keerath gaaeiou || |
| He does not practice the Naam, the Name of the Lord; nor does he practice charity or inner cleansing. |
|
| ਨਾਨਾ ਝੂਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਮਨੁ ਤੋਖਿਓ ਨਹ ਬੂਝਿਓ ਅਪਨਾਇਓ ॥੩॥ |
| naanaa jhooth laae man thokhiou neh boojhiou apanaaeiou ||3|| |
| He does not sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, even for an instant. Clinging to his many falsehoods, he does not please his own mind, and he does not understand his own self. ||3|| |
|
| ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਕੀਏ ਨਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ॥ |
| paroupakaar n kabehoo keeeae nehee sathigur saev dhhiaaeiou || |
| He never does good deeds for others; he does not serve or meditate on the True Guru. |
|
| ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਰਚਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਮਦ ਮਾਇਓ ॥੪॥ |
| panch dhooth rach sangath gosatt mathavaaro madh maaeiou ||4|| |
| He is entangled in the company and the advice of the five demons, intoxicated by the wine of Maya. ||4|| |
|
| ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਇਓ ॥ |
| karo baenathee saadhhasangath har bhagath vashhal sun aaeiou || |
| I offer my prayer in the Saadh Sangat; hearing that the Lord is the Lover of His devotees, I have come. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਰਾਖੁ ਲਾਜ ਅਪੁਨਾਇਓ ॥੫॥੧॥੩॥ |
| naanak bhaag pariou har paashhai raakh laaj apunaaeiou ||5||1||3|| |
| Nanak runs after the Lord, and pleads, ""Protect my honor, Lord, and make me Your own.""||5||1||3|| |

| ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| maanukh bin boojhae birathhaa aaeiaa || |
| Without understanding, his coming into the world is useless. |
|
| ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਓਢਾਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| anik saaj seegaar bahu karathaa jio mirathak oudtaaeiaa || rehaao || |
| He puts on various ornaments and many decorations, but it is like dressing a corpse. ||Pause|| |

| ਧਾਇ ਧਾਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਨ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhhaae dhhaae kirapan sram keeno eikathr karee hai maaeiaa || |
| With great effort and exertion, the miser works to gather in the riches of Maya. |
|
| ਦਾਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| dhaan punn nehee santhan saevaa kith hee kaaj n aaeiaa ||1|| |
| He does not give anything in charity or generosity, and he does not serve the Saints; his wealth does not do him any good at all. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਰਿ ਆਭਰਣ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੇਜਾ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਥਾਟੁ ਬਨਾਇਆ ॥ |
| kar aabharan savaaree saejaa kaaman thhaatt banaaeiaa || |
| The soul-bride puts on her ornaments, embellishes her bed, and fashions decorations. |
|
| ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਭਰਤੇ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| sang n paaeiou apunae bharathae paekh paekh dhukh paaeiaa ||2|| |
| But if she does not obtain the company of her Husband Lord, the sight of these decorations only brings her pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਸਾਰੋ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੁਹੁ ਮੂਸਲਹਿ ਛਰਾਇਆ ॥ |
| saaro dhinas majooree karathaa thuhu moosalehi shharaaeiaa || |
| The man works all day long, threshing the husks with the pestle. |
|
| ਖੇਦੁ ਭਇਓ ਬੇਗਾਰੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| khaedh bhaeiou baegaaree niaaee ghar kai kaam n aaeiaa ||3|| |
| He is depressed, like a forced laborer, and so he is of no use to his own home. ||3|| |
|
| ਭਇਓ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ |
| bhaeiou anugrahu jaa ko prabh ko this hiradhai naam vasaaeiaa || |
| But when God shows His Mercy and Grace, He implants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within the heart. |
|
| ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰਿਅਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੪॥ |
| saadhhasangath kai paashhai pariao jan naanak har ras paaeiaa ||4||2||4|| |
| Search the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, and find the sublime essence of the Lord. ||4||2||4|| |

| kirapaa nidhh basahu ridhai har neeth || |
| O Lord, ocean of mercy, please abide forever in my heart. |

| ਤੈਸੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| thaisee budhh karahu paragaasaa laagai prabh sang preeth || rehaao || |
| Please awaken such understanding within me, that I may be in love with You, God. ||Pause|| |

| ਦਾਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਵਉ ਧੂਰਾ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇ ਲੇ ਲਾਵਉ ॥ |
| dhaas thumaarae kee paavo dhhooraa masathak lae lae laavo || |
| Please, bless me with the dust of the feet of Your slaves; I touch it to my forehead. |

| ਆਗਿਆ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗਉ ਕੀਓ ਤੁਹਾਰੋ ਭਾਵਉ ॥ |
| aagiaa thumaree meethee laago keeou thuhaaro bhaavo || |
| Your Will seems so sweet to me; whatever You do, is pleasing to me. |
|
| ਜੋ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਹੀ ਇਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਆਨ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਧਾਵਉ ॥੨॥ |
| jo thoo dhaehi thehee eihu thripathai aan n kathehoo dhhaavo ||2|| |
| Whatever You give me, with that I am satisfied; I shall chase after no one else. ||2|| |
|
| ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਜਾਨਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਰੇਣ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀਐ ॥ |
| sadh hee nikatt jaano prabh suaamee sagal raen hoe reheeai || |
| I know that my Lord and Master God is always with me; I am the dust of all men's feet. |
|
| ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੩॥ |
| saadhhoo sangath hoe paraapath thaa prabh apunaa leheeai ||3|| |
| If I find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I shall obtain God. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਮ ਛੋਹਰੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਮਰੋ ਮੀਰਾ ॥ |
| sadhaa sadhaa ham shhoharae thumarae thoo prabh hamaro meeraa || |
| Forever and ever, I am Your child; You are my God, my King. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰੋ ਖੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥ |
| naanak baarik thum maath pithaa mukh naam thumaaro kheeraa ||4||3||5|| |
| Nanak is Your child; You are my mother and father; please, give me Your Name, like milk in my mouth. ||4||3||5|| |

| avar kashhoo maerai sang n chaalai milai kirapaa gun gaam ||1|| rehaao || |
| Nothing else shall go along with me in the end; by Your Grace, please allow me to sing Your Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause|| |

| Power, wealth, various pleasures and enjoyments, all are just like the shadow of a tree. |

| ਧਾਇ ਧਾਇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ |
| dhhaae dhhaae bahu bidhh ko dhhaavai sagal niraarathh kaam ||1|| |
| He runs, runs, runs around in many directions, but all of his pursuits are useless. ||1|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਅਵਰੁ ਜੇ ਚਾਹਉ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਬਾਤ ਹੈ ਖਾਮ ॥ |
| bin govindh avar jae chaaho dheesai sagal baath hai khaam || |
| Except for the Lord of the Universe, everything he desires appears transitory. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਰੇਨ ਮਾਗਉ ਮੇਰੋ ਮਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥੨॥੧॥੬॥ |

| Says Nanak, I beg for the dust of the feet of the Saints, so that my mind may find peace and tranquility. ||2||1||6|| |

| ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਸੂਖ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਏਹ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jeea praan sookh eis man ko barathan eaeh hamaarai ||1|| rehaao || |
| It is my life, my breath of life, my peace of mind; for me, it is an article of daily use. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪਰਵਾਰੈ ॥ |

| The Naam is my social status, the Naam is my honor; the Naam is my family. |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ |
| naam sakhaaee sadhaa maerai sang har naam mo ko nisathaarai ||1|| |
| The Naam is my companion; it is always with me. The Lord's Name is my emancipation. ||1|| |

| ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਚਲਤ ਨ ਕਛੂ ਸੰਗਾਰੈ ॥ |
| bikhai bilaas keheeath bahuthaerae chalath n kashhoo sangaarai || |
| Sensual pleasures are talked about a lot, but none of them goes along with anyone in the end. |

| ਇਸਟੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੭॥ |

| The Naam is Nanak's dearest friend; the Lord's Name is my treasure. ||2||2||7|| |
