| As the fish cannot survive at all without water, |

| ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥ |
| thio har bin santh n jeevee bin har naamai mar jaae ||7|| |
| the Saint cannot live without the Lord. Without the Lord's Name, he dies. ||7|| |

| ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਕਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਉ ॥ |
| mai sathigur saethee pireharree kio gur bin jeevaa maao || |
| I am so much in love with my True Guru! How could I even live without the Guru, O my mother? |

| ਮੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੮॥ |
| mai gurabaanee aadhhaar hai gurabaanee laag rehaao ||8|| |
| I have the Support of the Word of the Guru's Bani. Attached to Gurbani, I survive. ||8|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਦੇਵੈ ਮਾਇ ॥ |
| har har naam rathann hai gur thuthaa dhaevai maae || |
| The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is a jewel; by the Pleasure of His Will, the Guru has given it, O my mother. |

| ਮੈ ਧਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੯॥ |
| mai dhhar sachae naam kee har naam rehaa liv laae ||9|| |
| The True Name is my only Support. I remain lovingly absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||9|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਦੇਇ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥ |
| gur giaan padhaarathh naam hai har naamo dhaee dhrirraae || |
| The wisdom of the Guru is the treasure of the Naam. The Guru implants and enshrines the Lord's Name. |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਲਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥੧੦॥ |
| jis paraapath so lehai gur charanee laagai aae ||10|| |
| He alone receives it, he alone gets it, who comes and falls at the Guru's Feet. ||10|| |
|
| ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਆਖੈ ਆਇ ॥ |
| akathh kehaanee praem kee ko preetham aakhai aae || |
| If only someone would come and tell me the Unspoken Speech of the Love of my Beloved. |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਮਨੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੧॥ |
| this dhaevaa man aapanaa niv niv laagaa paae ||11|| |
| I would dedicate my mind to him; I would bow down in humble respect, and fall at his feet. ||11|| |

| ਸਜਣੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ |
| sajan maeraa eaek thoon karathaa purakh sujaan || |
| You are my only Friend, O my All-knowing, All-powerful Creator Lord. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੀਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੧੨॥ |
| sathigur meeth milaaeiaa mai sadhaa sadhaa thaeraa thaan ||12|| |
| You have brought me to meet with my True Guru. Forever and ever, You are my only strength. ||12|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| My True Guru, forever and ever, does not come and go. |

| ਓਹੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੩॥ |
| ouhu abinaasee purakh hai sabh mehi rehiaa samaae ||13|| |
| He is the Imperishable Creator Lord; He is permeating and pervading among all. ||13|| |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ |
| raam naam dhhan sanchiaa saabath poonjee raas || |
| I have gathered in the wealth of the Lord's Name. My facilities and faculties are intact, safe and sound. |

| He is entangled in sinful associations; |

| ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਅਨਿਕ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥੧॥ |

| his mind is troubled by so very many waves. ||1|| |

| He remains entangled in the intoxication of worldly love. |

| ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੇ ॥੨॥ |
| ath thrisanaa kabehoo nehee dhhraapae ||2|| |
| His excessive thirst is never quenched. ||2|| |
|
| ਬਸਇ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ਚੰਡਾਰਾ ॥ |
| basae karodhh sareer chanddaaraa || |
| Anger is the outcaste which hides within his body; |
|
| ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ |
| agiaan n soojhai mehaa gubaaraa ||3|| |
| he is in the utter darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand. ||3|| |
|
| ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਜਰੇ ਕਿਵਾਰਾ ॥ |
| bhramath biaapath jarae kivaaraa || |
| Afflicted by doubt, the shutters are shut tight; |
|
| ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥ |
| jaan n paaeeai prabh dharabaaraa ||4|| |
| he cannot go to God's Court. ||4|| |
|
| ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥ |
| aasaa andhaesaa bandhh paraanaa || |
| The mortal is bound and gagged by hope and fear; |
|
| ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਫਿਰਤ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੫॥ |
| mehal n paavai firath bigaanaa ||5|| |
| he cannot find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and so he wanders around like a stranger. ||5|| |

| ਸਗਲ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥ |
| sagal biaadhh kai vas kar dheenaa || |
| He falls under the power of all negative influences; |
|
| ਫਿਰਤ ਪਿਆਸ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥੬॥ |
| firath piaas jio jal bin meenaa ||6|| |
| he wanders around thirsty like a fish out of water. ||6|| |
|
| ਕਛੂ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਉਕਤਿ ਨ ਮੋਰੀ ॥ |
| kashhoo siaanap oukath n moree || |
| I have no clever tricks or techniques; |
|
| ਏਕ ਆਸ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੋਰੀ ॥੭॥ |
| eaek aas thaakur prabh thoree ||7|| |
| You are my only hope, O my Lord God Master. ||7|| |
|
| ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਪਾਸੇ ॥ |

| In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Messenger of Death cannot even touch them. ||2|| |

| The Merciful, Incomparably Beautiful, Embodiment of Life. |

| Vibrating the Glorious Virtues of the Lord, the noose of the Messenger of Death is cut away. ||3|| |

| One who constantly chants the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam with his tongue, |

| ਰੋਗ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥੪॥ |
| rog roop maaeiaa n biaapai ||4|| |
| is not touched or affected by Maya, the embodiment of disease. ||4|| |
|
| ਜਪਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਭਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥ |
| jap gobindh sangee sabh thaarae || |
| Chant and meditate on God, the Lord of the Universe, and all of your companions shall be carried across; |
|
| ਪੋਹਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੰਚ ਬਟਵਾਰੇ ॥੫॥ |
| pohath naahee panch battavaarae ||5|| |
| the five thieves will not even approach. ||5|| |
