| The whole world is overflowing with pain and suffering; who can know the state of my inner self? |

| Comings and goings are terrible and dreadful; there is no end to the rounds of reincarnation. |

| ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਊਣੇ ਝੂਣੇ ਨਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
| naam vihoonae oonae jhoonae naa gur sabadh sunaaeiaa || |
| Without the Naam, he is vacant and sad; he does not listen to the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਮਨੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਸੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ |
| man paradhaesee jae thheeai sabh dhaes paraaeiaa ||7|| |
| If the mind becomes a stranger to God, then all the world becomes a stranger to him. ||7|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਮਹਲੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੋ ਭਰਪੁਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ |
| gur mehalee ghar aapanai so bharapur leenaa || |
| One who finds the Guru's Mansion within the home of his own being, merges in the All-pervading Lord. |

| ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਾਂ ਕਰੇ ਸਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਣਾ ॥ |
| saevak saevaa thaan karae sach sabadh patheenaa || |
| The sevadar performs selfless service when he is pleased, and confirmed in the True Word of the Shabad. |

| ਸਬਦੇ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅੰਕੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਤਰੇ ॥ |
| sabadhae patheejai ank bheejai s mehal mehalaa antharae || |
| Confirmed in the Shabad, with her being softened by devotion, the bride dwells in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, deep within her being. |

| ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰੇ ॥ |
| aap karathaa karae soee prabh aap anth nirantharae || |
| The Creator Himself creates; God Himself, in the end, is endless. |

| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਬਾਜੰਤ ਅਨਹਦ ਬੀਣਾ ॥ |

| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mortal is united, and then embellished; the unstruck melody of the sound current resounds. |

| keethaa kiaa saalaaheeai kar vaekhai soee || |
| Why praise that which is created? Praise instead the One who created it and watches over it. |

| ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ |
| thaa kee keemath n pavai jae lochai koee || |
| His value cannot be estimated, no matter how much one may wish. |

| ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਜਾਣਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਨ ਭੁਲਏ ॥ |
| keemath so paavai aap jaanaavai aap abhul n bhuleae || |
| He alone can estimate the Lord's value, whom the Lord Himself causes to know. He is not mistaken; He does not make mistakes. |

| ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਮੁਲਏ ॥ |
| jai jai kaar karehi thudhh bhaavehi gur kai sabadh amuleae || |
| He alone celebrates victory, who is pleasing to You, through the Invaluable Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਹੀਣਉ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਭਾਈ ॥ |

| The Lord God will bestow His Grace, if you meditate on the Lord; O humble servant of the Lord, you shall obtain the fruit of peace. |

| andharahu dhuramath dhoojee khoee so jan har liv laagaa || |
| One who eliminates evil-mindedness and duality from within himself, that humble being lovingly focuses his mind on the Lord. |

| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਨ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥ |
| jin ko kirapaa keenee maerai suaamee thin anadhin har gun gaaeae || |
| Those, upon whom my Lord and Master bestows His Grace, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. |

| ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੨॥ |
| sun man bheenae sehaj subhaaeae ||2|| |
| Hearing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I am intuitively drenched with His Love. ||2|| |

| In this age, emancipation comes only from the Lord's Name. |

| Contemplative meditation on the Word of the Shabad emanates from the Guru. |

| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| gur sabadh veechaaraa raam naam piaaraa jis kirapaa karae s paaeae || |
| Contemplating the Guru's Shabad, one comes to love the Lord's Name; he alone obtains it, unto whom the Lord shows Mercy. |

| ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |
| sehajae gun gaavai dhin raathee kilavikh sabh gavaaeae || |
| In peace and poise, he sings the Lord's Praises day and night, and all sins are eradicated. |
|
| ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥ |
| sabh ko thaeraa thoo sabhanaa kaa ho thaeraa thoo hamaaraa || |
| All are Yours, and You belong to all. I am Yours, and You are mine. |

| singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, one is satisfied and fulfilled. |

| ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਏ ॥ |

| Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, one is satisfied forever, never to feel hunger again. |

| ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਪੂਜ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥ |
| dheh dhis pooj hovai har jan kee jo har har naam dhhiaaeae || |
| That humble servant of the Lord, who meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is worshipped in the ten directions. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |

| so bhagath jo guramukh hovai houmai sabadh jalaaeiaa raam || |
| Those devotees who become Gurmukh burn away their ego, through the Word of the Shabad. |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ |
| houmai sabadh jalaaeiaa maerae har bhaaeiaa jis dhee saachee baanee || |
| Those who burn away their ego through the Shabad, become pleasing to my Lord; their speech becomes True. |

| ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥ |
| sachee bhagath karehi dhin raathee guramukh aakh vakhaanee || |
| They perform the Lord's true devotional service, day and night, as the Guru has instructed them. |

| ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਲ ਸਚੀ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ |
| bhagathaa kee chaal sachee ath niramal naam sachaa man bhaaeiaa || |
| The devotees' lifestyle is true, and absolutely pure; the True Name is pleasing to their minds. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |

| The Lord is the social class and honor of His devotees; the Lord's devotees merge in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |
