ਓਪਾਵਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਓਪਾਉ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
oupaavaa sir oupaao hai naao paraapath hoe || |
Of all efforts, the best effort is to attain the Lord's Name. |

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
andhar seethal saanth hai hiradhai sadhaa sukh hoe || |
It brings a cooling, soothing tranquility deep within the heart, and eternal peace. |

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
anmrith khaanaa painhanaa naanak naae vaddiaaee hoe ||1|| |
Then, one eats and wears the Ambrosial Nectar; O Nanak, through the Name, comes glorious greatness. ||1|| |

O mind,listening to the Guru's Teachings,you shall obtain the treasure of virtue. |

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ |
sukhadhaathaa thaerai man vasai houmai jaae abhimaan || |
The Giver of peace shall dwell in your mind; you shall be rid of egotism and pride. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ |

ਜਿਤਨੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਰਾਜੇ ਖਾਨ ਉਮਰਾਵ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ ਹਹਿ ਤਿਤਨੇ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥ |
jithanae paathisaah saah raajae khaan oumaraav sikadhaar hehi thithanae sabh har kae keeeae || |
The kings, emperors, rulers, lords, nobles and chiefs, are all created by the Lord. |

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਓਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਅਰਥੀਏ ॥ |
jo kishh har karaavai s oue karehi sabh har kae arathheeeae || |
Whatever the Lord causes them to do, they do; they are all beggars, dependent on the Lord. |

ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਲਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਵਰਨ ਚਾਰੇ ਖਾਣੀ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਗੋਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣ ਕਉ ਦੀਏ ॥ |
so aisaa har sabhanaa kaa prabh sathigur kai val hai thin sabh varan chaarae khaanee sabh srisatt golae kar sathigur agai kaar kamaavan ko dheeeae || |
Such is God, the Lord of all; He is on the True Guru's side. All castes and social classes, the four sources of creation, and the whole universe are slaves of the True Guru; God makes them work for Him. |

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੇ ਕੀ ਐਸੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੀ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਦੂਤ ਸਭਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੀਏ ॥ |
har saevae kee aisee vaddiaaee dhaekhahu har santhahu jin vichahu kaaeiaa nagaree dhusaman dhooth sabh maar kadteeeae || |
See the glorious greatness of serving the Lord, O Saints of the Lord; He has conquered and driven all the enemies and evil-doers out of the body-village. |

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਏ ॥੬॥ |
har har kirapaal hoaa bhagath janaa oupar har aapanee kirapaa kar har aap rakh leeeae ||6|| |
The Lord, Har, Har, is Merciful to His humble devotees; granting His Grace, the Lord Himself protects and preserves them. ||6|| |

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
andhar kapatt sadhaa dhukh hai manamukh dhhiaan n laagai || |
Fraud and hypocrisy within bring constant pain; the self-willed manmukh does not practice meditation. |

ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥ |
dhukh vich kaar kamaavanee dhukh varathai dhukh aagai || |
Suffering in pain, he does his deeds; he is immersed in pain, and he shall suffer in pain hereafter. |

ਕਰਮੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਤਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
karamee sathigur bhaetteeai thaa sach naam liv laagai || |
By his karma, he meets the True Guru, and then, he is lovingly attuned to the True Name. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ |
naanak sehajae sukh hoe andharahu bhram bho bhaagai ||1|| |
O Nanak, he is naturally at peace; doubt and fear run away and leave him. ||1|| |

guramukh vaekhan bolanaa naam japath sukh paaeiaa || |
The Gurmukh beholds and speaks the Naam, the Name of the Lord; chanting the Naam, he finds peace. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਤਿਮਰ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
naanak guramukh giaan pragaasiaa thimar agiaan andhhaer chukaaeiaa ||2|| |
O Nanak, the spiritual wisdom of the Gurmukh shines forth; the black darkness of ignorance is dispelled. ||2|| |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ |
guramukh niramal har raakhiaa our dhhaar || |
The Gurmukhs are immaculate and pure; they keep the Lord enshrined within their hearts. |

ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
bhanath naanak sunahu jan bhaaee || |
Prays Nanak, listen, O Siblings of Destiny! |

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
sathigur saevihu houmai mal jaaee || |
Serve the True Guru, and the filth of your ego shall be gone. |

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧਾ ਨਿਤ ਮਾਰ ॥ |
andhar sansaa dhookh viaapae sir dhhandhhaa nith maar || |
Deep within, the pain of skepticism afflicts them; their heads are constantly assaulted by worldly entanglements. |

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੂਤੇ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ॥ |
dhoojai bhaae soothae kabahu n jaagehi maaeiaa moh piaar || |
Asleep in the love of duality, they never wake up; they are attached to the love of Maya. |

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ |
naam n chaethehi sabadh n veechaarehi eihu manamukh kaa beechaar || |
They do not remember the Name, and they do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad; this is the view of the self-willed manmukhs. |

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੩॥ |
har naam n bhaaeiaa birathhaa janam gavaaeiaa naanak jam maar karae khuaar ||3|| |
They do not love the Lord's Name, and they lose their life uselessly. O Nanak, the Messenger of Death attacks them, and humiliates them. ||3|| |

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਬਖਸੀਅਨੁ ਸੋ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ॥ |
jis no har bhagath sach bakhaseean so sachaa saahu || |
He alone is a true king, whom the Lord blesses with true devotion. |

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੀ ਲੋਕੁ ਕਢਦਾ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਹਟਿ ਨ ਵਥੁ ਨ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥ |
this kee muhathaajee lok kadtadhaa horath hatt n vathh n vaesaahu || |
People pledge their allegiance to him; no other store stocks this merchandise, nor deals in this trade. |

ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਨਮੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਲਏ ਵੇਮੁਖ ਭਸੁ ਪਾਹੁ ॥ |
bhagath janaa ko sanamukh hovai s har raas leae vaemukh bhas paahu || |
That humble devotee who turns his face towards the Guru and becomes sunmukh, receives the Lord's wealth; the faithless baymukh, who turns his face away from the Guru, gathers only ashes. |

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਹਹਿ ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੁ ॥ |
har kae naam kae vaapaaree har bhagath hehi jam jaagaathee thinaa naerr n jaahu || |
The Lord's devotees are dealers in the Name of the Lord. The Messenger of Death, the tax-collector, does not even approach them. |

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥੭॥ |
jan naanak har naam dhhan ladhiaa sadhaa vaeparavaahu ||7|| |
Servant Nanak has loaded the wealth of the Name of the Lord, who is forever independent and care-free. ||7|| |

eis jug mehi bhagathee har dhhan khattiaa hor sabh jagath bharam bhulaaeiaa || |
In this age, the devotee earns the wealth of the Lord; all the rest of the world wanders deluded in doubt. |

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ |
gur parasaadhee naam man vasiaa anadhin naam dhhiaaeiaa || |
By Guru's Grace, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell in his mind; night and day, he meditates on the Naam. |

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
bikhiaa maahi oudhaas hai houmai sabadh jalaaeiaa || |
In the midst of corruption, he remains detached; through the Word of the Shabad, he burns away his ego. |

ਆਪਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਰੇ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
aap thariaa kul oudhharae dhhann janaedhee maaeiaa || |
He crosses over, and saves his relatives as well; blessed is the mother who gave birth to him. |

ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
sadhaa sehaj sukh man vasiaa sachae sio liv laaeiaa || |
Peace and poise fill his mind forever, and he embraces love for the True Lord. |

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹਾਦੇਉ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭੁਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ |
brehamaa bisan mehaadhaeo thrai gun bhulae houmai mohu vadhhaaeiaa || |
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva wander in the three qualities, while their egotism and desire increase. |

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਮੋਨੀ ਭੁਲੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
panddith parr parr monee bhulae dhoojai bhaae chith laaeiaa || |
The Pandits, the religious scholars and the silent sages read and debate in confusion; their consciousness is centered on the love of duality. |

ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਭੁਲੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
jogee jangam sanniaasee bhulae vin gur thath n paaeiaa || |
The Yogis, wandering pilgrims and Sanyaasees are deluded; without the Guru, they do not find the essence of reality. |

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
manamukh dhukheeeae sadhaa bhram bhulae thinhee birathhaa janam gavaaeiaa || |
The miserable self-willed manmukhs are forever deluded by doubt; they waste away their lives uselessly. |
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਸਮਧੇ ਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
naanak naam rathae saeee jan samadhhae j aapae bakhas milaaeiaa ||1|| |
O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam are balanced and poised; forgiving them, the Lord blends them with Himself. ||1|| |

O Nanak, praise Him, who has control over everything. |

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਹੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
thisehi saraevahu praaneeho this bin avar n koe || |
Remember Him, O mortals - without Him, there is no other at all. |
