| ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ |
| lakh chouraaseeh faer paeiaa mar janmai hoe khuaar || |
| They go through the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations, and they are ruined through death and rebirth. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| sathigur kee saevaa so karae jis no aap karaaeae soe || |
| He alone serves the True Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| sathigur vich naam nidhhaan hai karam paraapath hoe || |
| The Treasure of the Naam is within the True Guru; by His Grace, it is obtained. |

| ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੀ ਸਦਾ ਲਿਵ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| sach rathae gur sabadh sio thin sachee sadhaa liv hoe || |
| Those who are truly attuned to the Word of the Guru's Shabad-their love is forever True. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮੇਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak jis no maelae n vishhurrai sehaj samaavai soe ||1|| |
| O Nanak, those who are united with Him shall not be separated again. They merge imperceptibly into God. ||1|| |

|
| ਸੋ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਜ+ ਭਗਵੰਤੈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| so bhagouthee juo bhagavanthai jaanai || |
| One who knows the Benevolent Lord God is the true devotee of Bhagaautee. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee aap pashhaanai || |
| By Guru's Grace, he is self-realized. |
|
| ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥ |
| dhhaavath raakhai eikath ghar aanai || |
| He restrains his wandering mind, and brings it back to its own home within the self. |
|
| ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ |
| jeevath marai har naam vakhaanai || |
| He remains dead while yet alive, and he chants the Name of the Lord. |

| ਐਸਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| aisaa bhagouthee outham hoe || |
| Such a Bhagaautee is most exalted. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਕਹਾਏ ॥ |
| anthar kapatt bhagouthee kehaaeae || |
| He is full of deceit, and yet he calls himself a devotee of Bhagaautee. |
|
| ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| paakhandd paarabreham kadhae n paaeae || |
| Through hypocrisy, he shall never attain the Supreme Lord God. |
|
| ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ |
| par nindhaa karae anthar mal laaeae || |
| He slanders others, and pollutes himself with his own filth. |
|
| ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥ |
| baahar mal dhhovai man kee jooth n jaaeae || |
| Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away. |

| ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਏ ॥ |
| sathasangath sio baadh rachaaeae || |
| He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਚਾਏ ॥ |
| anadhin dhukheeaa dhoojai bhaae rachaaeae || |
| Night and day, he suffers, engrossed in the love of duality. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ |
| har naam n chaethai bahu karam kamaaeae || |
| He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals. |

| ਪੂਰਬ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥ |
| poorab likhiaa s maettanaa n jaaeae || |
| That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥ |

| O Nanak, without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||3|| |

| Those who meditate on the True Guru shall not be burnt to ashes. |

| sathigur jinee dhhiaaeiaa sae thripath aghaahee || |
| Those who meditate on the True Guru are satisfied and fulfilled. |

| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹੋਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਹੀ ॥ |
| jin ko hoaa kirapaal har sae sathigur pairee paahee || |
| Those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, fall at the Feet of the True Guru. |

| ਤਿਨ ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੧੪॥ |
| thin aithhai outhhai mukh oujalae har dharageh paidhhae jaahee ||14|| |
| Here and hereafter, their faces are radiant; they go to the Lord's Court in robes of honor. ||14|| |

| Shalok, Second Mehl: |
|
| ਜੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਾਂਈ ਨਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਡਾਰਿ ॥ |
| jo sir saanee naa nivai so sir dheejai ddaar || |
| Chop off that head which does not bow to the Lord. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਨਹੀ ਸੋ ਪਿੰਜਰੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak jis pinjar mehi birehaa nehee so pinjar lai jaar ||1|| |
| O Nanak, that human body, in which there is no pain of separation from the Lord-take that body and burn it. ||1|| |

| mundtahu bhulee naanakaa fir fir janam mueeaas || |
| Forgetting the Primal Lord, O Nanak, people are born and die, over and over again. |

| ਕਸਤੂਰੀ ਕੈ ਭੋਲੜੈ ਗੰਦੇ ਡੁੰਮਿ ਪਈਆਸੁ ॥੨॥ |
| kasathooree kai bholarrai gandhae ddunm peeaas ||2|| |
| Mistaking it for musk, they have fallen into the stinking pit of filth. ||2|| |

| so aisaa har naam dhhiaaeeai man maerae jo sabhanaa oupar hukam chalaaeae || |
| Meditate on that Name of the Lord, O my mind, whose Command rules over all. |

| ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੋ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਏ ॥ |
| so aisaa har naam japeeai man maerae jo anthee aousar leae shhaddaaeae || |
| Chant that Name of the Lord, O my mind, which will save you at the very last moment. |

| ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |
| so aisaa har naam japeeai man maerae j man kee thrisanaa sabh bhukh gavaaeae || |
| Chant that Name of the Lord, O my mind, which shall drive out all hunger and desire from your mind. |

| ਸੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਤਿਨ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| so guramukh naam japiaa vaddabhaagee thin nindhak dhusatt sabh pairee paaeae || |
| Very fortunate and blessed is that Gurmukh who chants the Naam; it shall bring all slanderers and wicked enemies to fall at his feet. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਸਭਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਅਗੈ ਆਣਿ ਨਿਵਾਏ ॥੧੫॥ |
| naanak naam araadhh sabhanaa thae vaddaa sabh naavai agai aan nivaaeae ||15|| |
| O Nanak, worship and adore the Naam, the Greatest Name of all, before which all come and bow. ||15|| |

| ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇ ਕੁਰੂਪਿ ਕੁਲਖਣੀ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥ |
| vaes karae kuroop kulakhanee man khottai koorriaar || |
| She may wear good clothes, but the bride is ugly and rude; her mind is false and impure. |
|
| ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਨਾ ਚਲੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਗਾਵਾਰਿ ॥ |
| pir kai bhaanai naa chalai hukam karae gaavaar || |
| She does not walk in harmony with the Will of her Husband Lord. Instead, she foolishly gives Him orders. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਿ ॥ |
| gur kai bhaanai jo chalai sabh dhukh nivaaranehaar || |
| But she who walks in harmony with the Guru's Will, shall be spared all pain and suffering. |
|
| ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥ |
| likhiaa maett n sakeeai jo dhhur likhiaa karathaar || |
| That destiny which was pre-ordained by the Creator cannot be erased. |
|
| ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਉਪੇ ਕੰਤ ਕਉ ਸਬਦੇ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ |
| man than soupae kanth ko sabadhae dhharae piaar || |
| She must dedicate her mind and body to her Husband Lord, and enshrine love for the Word of the Shabad. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
| bin naavai kinai n paaeiaa dhaekhahu ridhai beechaar || |
| Without His Name, no one has found Him; see this and reflect upon it in your heart. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਸੁਆਲਿਓ ਸੁਲਖਣੀ ਜਿ ਰਾਵੀ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| naanak saa suaaliou sulakhanee j raavee sirajanehaar ||1|| |
| O Nanak, she is beautiful and graceful; the Creator Lord ravishes and enjoys her. ||1|| |

| maaeiaa mohu gubaar hai this dhaa n dhisai ouravaar n paar || |
| Attachment to Maya is an ocean of darkness; neither this shore nor the one beyond can be seen. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥ |
| manamukh agiaanee mehaa dhukh paaeidhae ddubae har naam visaar || |
| The ignorant, self-willed manmukhs suffer in terrible pain; they forget the Lord's Name and drown. |
