| ਆਕਾਸਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਹੈ ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਰਹਾਇਲੇ ॥ |
| aakaas gagan paathaal gagan hai chahu dhis gagan rehaaeilae || |
| The Celestial Lord is in the Akaashic ethers of the skies, the Celestial Lord is in the nether regions of the underworld; in the four directions, the Celestial Lord is pervading. |

| ਆਨਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੁ ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਗਗਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇਲੇ ॥੧॥ |
| aanadh mool sadhaa purakhotham ghatt binasai gagan n jaaeilae ||1|| |
| The Supreme Lord God is forever the source of bliss. When the vessel of the body perishes, the Celestial Lord does not perish. ||1|| |

| ਮੋਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਓ ॥ |
| mohi bairaag bhaeiou || |
| I have become sad, |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਗਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| eihu jeeo aae kehaa gaeiou ||1|| rehaao || |
| wondering where the soul comes from, and where it goes. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਕੀਨੁ ਰੇ ॥ |
| panch thath mil kaaeiaa keenhee thath kehaa thae keen rae || |
| The body is formed from the union of the five tatvas; but where were the five tatvas created? |

| ਕਰਮ ਬਧ ਤੁਮ ਜੀਉ ਕਹਤ ਹੌ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਕਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਦੀਨੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥ |
| karam badhh thum jeeo kehath ha karamehi kin jeeo dheen rae ||2|| |
| You say that the soul is tied to its karma, but who gave karma to the body? ||2|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਮਹਿ ਤਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਸੋਇ ਰੇ ॥ |
| har mehi than hai than mehi har hai sarab niranthar soe rae || |
| The body is contained in the Lord, and the Lord is contained in the body. He is permeating within all. |

| ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਰੇ ॥੩॥੩॥ |
| kehi kabeer raam naam n shhoddo sehajae hoe s hoe rae ||3||3|| |
| Says Kabeer, I shall not renounce the Lord's Name. I shall accept whatever happens. ||3||3|| |

| ਭੁਜਾ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਭਿਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ॥ |
| bhujaa baandhh bhilaa kar ddaariou || |
| They tied my arms, bundled me up, and threw me before an elephant. |
|
| ਹਸਤੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਪਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥ |
| hasathee krop moondd mehi maariou || |
| The elephant driver struck him on the head, and infuriated him. |
|
| ਹਸਤਿ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੈ ਚੀਸਾ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ |
| hasath bhaag kai cheesaa maarai || |
| But the elephant ran away, trumpeting, |
|
| ਇਆ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ |
| eiaa moorath kai ho balihaarai ||1|| |
| "I am a sacrifice to this image of the Lord."||1|| |
|
| ਆਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਜੋਰੁ ॥ |
| aahi maerae thaakur thumaraa jor || |
| O my Lord and Master, You are my strength. |
|
| ਕਾਜੀ ਬਕਿਬੋ ਹਸਤੀ ਤੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| kaajee bakibo hasathee thor ||1|| rehaao || |
| The Qazi shouted at the driver to drive the elephant on. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਰੇ ਮਹਾਵਤ ਤੁਝੁ ਡਾਰਉ ਕਾਟਿ ॥ |
| rae mehaavath thujh ddaaro kaatt || |
| He yelled out, ""O driver, I shall cut you into pieces. |
|
| ਇਸਹਿ ਤੁਰਾਵਹੁ ਘਾਲਹੁ ਸਾਟਿ ॥ |
| eisehi thuraavahu ghaalahu saatt || |
| Hit him, and drive him on!"" |
|
| ਹਸਤਿ ਨ ਤੋਰੈ ਧਰੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ |
| hasath n thorai dhharai dhhiaan || |
| But the elephant did not move; instead, he began to meditate. |
|
| ਵਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ |
| vaa kai ridhai basai bhagavaan ||2|| |
| The Lord God abides within his mind. ||2|| |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਅਪਰਾਧੁ ਸੰਤ ਹੈ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ॥ |
| kiaa aparaadhh santh hai keenhaa || |
| What sin has this Saint committed, |
|
| ਬਾਂਧਿ ਪੋਟ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਕਉ ਦੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ॥ |
| baandhh pott kunchar ko dheenhaa || |
| that you have made him into a bundle and thrown him before the elephant? |
|
| ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਪੋਟ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ॥ |
| kunchar pott lai lai namasakaarai || |
| Lifting up the bundle, the elephant bows down before it. |
|
| ਬੂਝੀ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਜੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੈ ॥੩॥ |
| boojhee nehee kaajee andhhiaarai ||3|| |
| The Qazi could not understand it; he was blind. ||3|| |
|
| ਮਨ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਅਜਹੂ ਨ ਪਤੀਨਾ ॥ |
| man kathor ajehoo n patheenaa || |
| Even then, his hardened mind was not satisfied. |
|
| ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਮਰਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ॥ |
| kehi kabeer hamaraa gobindh || |
| Says Kabeer, such is my Lord and Master. |
|
| ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਜਿੰਦੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥ |
| chouthhae padh mehi jan kee jindh ||4||1||4|| |
| The soul of His humble servant dwells in the fourth state. ||4||1||4|| |

| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਨਸੁ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਦੇਉ ॥ |
| naa eihu maanas naa eihu dhaeo || |
| It is not human, and it is not a god. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਉ ॥ |
| naa eihu jathee kehaavai saeo || |
| It is not called celibate, or a worshipper of Shiva. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਅਵਧੂਤਾ ॥ |
| naa eihu jogee naa avadhhoothaa || |
| It is not a Yogi, and it is not a hermit. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਇ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਪੂਤਾ ॥੧॥ |
| naa eis maae n kaahoo poothaa ||1|| |
| It is not a mother, or anyone's son. ||1|| |
|
| ਇਆ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਕੌਨ ਬਸਾਈ ॥ |
| eiaa mandhar mehi kaan basaaee || |
| Then what is it, which dwells in this temple of the body? |
|
| ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| thaa kaa anth n kooo paaee ||1|| rehaao || |
| No one can find its limits. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਨਾ ਓਦਾਸੀ ॥ |
| naa eihu girehee naa oudhaasee || |
| It is not a house-holder, and it is not a renouncer of the world. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਨ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਾਸੀ ॥ |
| naa eihu raaj n bheekh mangaasee || |
| It is not a king, and it is not a beggar. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਨ ਰਕਤੂ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ |
| naa eis pindd n rakathoo raathee || |
| It has no body, no drop of blood. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨੁ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਖਾਤੀ ॥੨॥ |
| naa eihu brehaman naa eihu khaathee ||2|| |
| It is not a Brahmin, and it is not a Kh'shaatriya. ||2|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥ |
| naa eihu thapaa kehaavai saekh || |
| It is not called a man of austere self-discipline, or a Shaykh. |
|
| ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਨ ਮਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੁ ॥ |
| naa eihu jeevai n marathaa dhaekh || |
| It does not live, and it is not seen to die. |
|
| ਇਸੁ ਮਰਤੇ ਕਉ ਜੇ ਕੋਊ ਰੋਵੈ ॥ |
| eis marathae ko jae kooo rovai || |
| If someone cries over its death, |
|
| ਜੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥੩॥ |
| jo rovai soee path khovai ||3|| |
| that person loses his honor. ||3|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੈ ਡਗਰੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| gur prasaadh mai ddagaro paaeiaa || |
| By Guru's Grace, I have found the Path. |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਨੁ ਦੋਊ ਮਿਟਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jeevan maran dhooo mittavaaeiaa || |
| Birth and death have both been erased. |
|
| ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਅੰਸੁ ॥ |
| kahu kabeer eihu raam kee ans || |
| Says Kabeer, this is formed of the same essence as the Lord. |
|
| ਜਸ ਕਾਗਦ ਪਰ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮੰਸੁ ॥੪॥੨॥੫॥ |
| jas kaagadh par mittai n mans ||4||2||5|| |
| It is like the ink on the paper which cannot be erased. ||4||2||5|| |

| ਦੁਆਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਝਿਲਕਾਵਹਿ ਕਾਨ ॥ |
| dhuaar oopar jhilakaavehi kaan || |
| Bare reeds glisten at the front door. |
|
| ਕੂਚ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ਫੂਏ ਫਾਲ ॥ |
| kooch bichaarae fooeae faal || |
| The poor brushes are scattered in pieces. |
