The self-willed manmukh is trapped in the darkness of emotional attachment; in the love of duality he speaks. |

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥ |
dhoojai bhaae sadhaa dhukh hai nith neer virolai || |
The love of duality brings pain forever; he churns the water endlessly. |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੋਲੈ ॥ |
guramukh naam dhhiaaeeai mathh thath kadtolai || |
The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he churns, and obtains the essence of reality. |

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਟੋਲੈ ॥ |
anthar paragaas ghatt chaananaa har ladhhaa ttolai || |
The Divine Light illuminates his heart deep within; he seeks the Lord, and obtains Him. |

ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੭॥ |
aapae bharam bhulaaeidhaa kishh kehan n jaaee ||17|| |
He Himself deludes in doubt; no one can comment on this. ||17|| |

O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. |

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਰੋਜੀ ਦੇਇ ॥ |
jal mehi janth oupaaeian thinaa bh rojee dhaee || |
He created the creatures in water, and He gives them their nourishment. |

ਓਥੈ ਹਟੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
outhhai hatt n chalee naa ko kiras karaee || |
There are no stores open there, and no one farms there. |

ਸਉਦਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥ |
soudhaa mool n hovee naa ko leae n dhaee || |
No business is ever transacted there, and no one buys or sells. |

ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਅ ਖਾਣਾ ਏਹੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
jeeaa kaa aahaar jeea khaanaa eaehu karaee || |
Animals eat other animals; this is what the Lord has given them as food. |

ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਸਾਇਰਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
vich oupaaeae saaeiraa thinaa bh saar karaee || |
He created them in the oceans, and He provides for them as well. |

O Nanak, this soul is the fish, and death is the hungry fisherman. |

manooaa andhh n chaethee parrai achinthaa jaal || |
The blind man does not even think of this. And suddenly, the net is cast. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
naanak chith achaeth hai chinthaa badhhaa jaae || |
O Nanak, his consciousness is unconscious, and he departs, bound by anxiety. |

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
nadhar karae jae aapanee thaa aapae leae milaae ||2|| |
But if the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites the soul with Himself. ||2|| |

They are true, forever true, who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ॥ |
guramukh sachaa man vasai sach soudhaa keethaa || |
The True Lord abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; He strikes the true bargain. |

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੀਤਾ ॥ |
sabh kishh ghar hee maahi hai vaddabhaagee leethaa || |
Everything is in the home of the self within; only the very fortunate obtain it. |

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਤਾ ॥ |
anthar thrisanaa mar gee har gun gaaveethaa || |
The hunger within is conquered and overcome, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. |

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੮॥ |
aapae mael milaaeian aapae dhaee bujhaaee ||18|| |
He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself blesses them with understanding. ||18|| |

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
vael pinnjaaeiaa kath vunaaeiaa || |
The cotton is ginned, woven and spun; |

ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ |
katt kutt kar khunb charraaeiaa || |
the cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white. |
 |
ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥ |
lohaa vadtae dharajee paarrae sooee dhhaagaa seevai || |
The tailor cuts it with his scissors, and sews it with his thread. |

ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥ |
eio path paattee sifathee seepai naanak jeevath jeevai || |
Thus, the torn and tattered honor is sewn up again, through the Lord's Praise, O Nanak, and one lives the true life. |

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥ |
hoe puraanaa kaparr paattai sooee dhhaagaa gandtai || |
Becoming worn, the cloth is torn; with needle and thread it is sewn up again. |

ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥ |
sach puraanaa hovai naahee seethaa kadhae n paattai || |
But the Truth does not grow old; and when it is stitched, it is never torn again. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥ |
naanak saahib sacho sachaa thichar jaapee jaapai ||1|| |
O Nanak, the Lord and Master is the Truest of the True. While we meditate on Him, we see Him. ||1|| |

The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True. |

ghaarrath this kee apar apaar || |
Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful. |

ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
sabadhae saan rakhaaee laae || |
It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad. |
 |
ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
gun kee thhaekai vich samaae || |
It is placed in the scabbard of virtue. |
 |
ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥ |
this dhaa kuthaa hovai saekh || |
If the Shaykh is killed with that, |
 |
ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥ |
lohoo lab nikathhaa vaekh || |
then the blood of greed will spill out. |
 |
ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
hoe halaal lagai hak jaae || |
One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
naanak dhar dheedhaar samaae ||2|| |
O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2|| |

A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse. |

ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ |

But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3|| |

They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. |

ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥ |
sach dhhiaaein sae sachae jin har kharach dhhan palai || |
Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth. |

ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥ |
bhagath sohan gun gaavadhae guramath achalai || |
The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging. |
