| The deeds I did in egotism and pride, have all been done in vain. ||1|| |

| Other days are of no use to me; |

| so dhin mo ko dheejai prabh jeeo jaa dhin har jas gaaeae ||1|| rehaao || |
| please bless me with those days, O Dear God, on which I may sing the Lord's Praises. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਝਾਏ ॥ |
| puthr kalathr grih dhaekh pasaaraa eis hee mehi ourajhaaeae || |
| Gazing upon children, spouse, household and possessions, one is entangled in these. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਚਾਖਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਮਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੨॥ |
| maaeiaa madh chaakh bheae oudhamaathae har har kabahu n gaaeae ||2|| |
| Tasting the wine of Maya, one is intoxicated, and never sings of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2|| |
|
| ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਜੀ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| eih bidhh khojee bahu parakaaraa bin santhan nehee paaeae || |
| In this way, I have examined lots of methods, but without the Saints, it is not found. |

| ਤੁਮ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਵਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਮਾਗਨ ਕਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਆਏ ॥੩॥ |
| thum dhaathaar vaddae prabh sanmrathh maagan ko dhaan aaeae ||3|| |
| You are the Great Giver, the great and almighty God; I have come to beg a gift from You. ||3|| |
|
| ਤਿਆਗਿਓ ਸਗਲਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤਾ ਦਾਸ ਰੇਣ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥ |
| thiaagiou sagalaa maan mehathaa dhaas raen saranaaeae || |
| Abandoning all pride and self-importance, I have sought the Sanctuary of the dust of the feet of the Lord's slave. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਏਕੈ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥ |

| In what place is the Name established? Where does egotism dwell? |

| ਕਵਨ ਚਿਹਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਛੋਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ |
| kavan chihan sun oopar shhohiou mukh thae sun kar gaaraa ||1|| |
| What injury have you suffered, listening to abuse from someone else's mouth? ||1|| |

| ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਇਓ ॥ |
| sunahu rae thoo koun kehaa thae aaeiou || |
| Listen: who are you, and where did you come from? |

| ਏਤੀ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ਕੇਤੀਕ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਚਲਤੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| eaethee n jaano kaetheek mudhath chalathae khabar n paaeiou ||1|| rehaao || |
| You don't even know how long you will stay here; you have no hint of when you shall leave. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਹਨ ਸੀਲ ਪਵਨ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੇ ॥ |
| sehan seel pavan ar paanee basudhhaa khimaa nibharaathae || |
| Wind and water have patience and tolerance; the earth has compassion and forgiveness, no doubt. |

| ਪੰਚ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਵਨ ਦੁਰਾਤੇ ॥੨॥ |
| panch thath mil bhaeiou sanjogaa ein mehi kavan dhuraathae ||2|| |
| The union of the five tattvas - the five elements - has brought you into being. Which of these is evil? ||2|| |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| jin rach rachiaa purakh bidhhaathai naalae houmai paaee || |
| The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, formed your form; He also burdened you with egotism. |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਕਉ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਓਹਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| janam maran ous hee ko hai rae ouhaa aavai jaaee ||3|| |
| He alone is born and dies; He alone comes and goes. ||3|| |

| ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਰਚਨਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| baran chihan naahee kishh rachanaa mithhiaa sagal pasaaraa || |
| Nothing of the color and the form of the creation shall remain; the entire expanse is transitory. |

| Pride, emotional attachment, greed and corruption are gone; I have not placed anything else, other than the Lord, within my consciousness. |

| ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਬਣਜੇ ਲਾਦਿ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਾਲਿਓ ॥੧॥ |
| naam rathan gunaa har banajae laadh vakhar lai chaaliou ||1|| |
| I have purchased the jewel of the Naam and the Glorious Praises of the Lord; loading this merchandise, I have set out on my journey. ||1|| |

| ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਓੜਕਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ |
| saevak kee ourrak nibehee preeth || |
| The love which the Lord's servant feels for the Lord lasts forever. |

| ਜੀਵਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਚਲਤੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jeevath saahib saeviou apanaa chalathae raakhiou cheeth ||1|| rehaao || |
| In my life, I served my Lord and Master, and as I depart, I keep Him enshrined in my consciousness. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜੈਸੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਕੀਨੀ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਮੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੋਰਿਓ ॥ |
| jaisee aagiaa keenee thaakur this thae mukh nehee moriou || |
| I have not turned my face away from my Lord and Master's Command. |

| ਸਹਜੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਰਖਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਉਠਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਕਉ ਦਉਰਿਓ ॥੨॥ |
| sehaj anandh rakhiou grih bheethar outh ouaahoo ko dhouriou ||2|| |
| He fills my household with celestial peace and bliss; if He asks me to leave, I leave at once. ||2|| |
|
| ਆਗਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਓ ॥ |
| aagiaa mehi bhookh soee kar sookhaa sog harakh nehee jaaniou || |
| When I am under the Lord's Command, I find even hunger pleasurable; I know no difference between sorrow and joy. |

| ਜੋ ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਓ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਮਾਥੈ ਲੇ ਮਾਨਿਓ ॥੩॥ |
| jo jo hukam bhaeiou saahib kaa so maathhai lae maaniou ||3|| |
| Whatever the Command of my Lord and Master is, I bow my forehead and accept it. ||3|| |

| ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਸਵਰੇ ਹਲਤ ਪਲਾਤਾ ॥ |
| bhaeiou kirapaal thaakur saevak ko savarae halath palaathaa || |
| The Lord and Master has become merciful to His servant; He has embellished both this world and the next. |

| ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਓਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੫॥ |
| dhhann saevak safal ouhu aaeiaa jin naanak khasam pashhaathaa ||4||5|| |
| Blessed is that servant, and fruitful is his birth; O Nanak, he realizes his Lord and Master. ||4||5|| |

| ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਥਾਕਾ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਈ ਸਗਲੀ ਧਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| sram thhaakaa paaeae bisraamaa mitt gee sagalee dhhaaee ||1|| |
| My struggle is ended; I have found peace and tranquility. All my wanderings have ceased. ||1|| |

| ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ |

| Now, I have obtained the state of eternal life. |

| Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment are eradicated; all my enemies are eliminated. |

| ਸਦ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਜਰੁ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਭਇਓ ਦੂਰਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| sadh hajoor haajar hai naajar kathehi n bhaeiou dhooraaee ||2|| |
| He is always ever-present, here and now, watching over me; He is never far away. ||2|| |

| ਸੁਖ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਰਧਾ ਸਭ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ |
| sukh seethal saradhhaa sabh pooree hoeae santh sehaaee || |
| In peace and cool tranquility, my faith has been totally fulfilled; the Saints are my Helpers and Support. |

| ਪਾਵਨ ਪਤਿਤ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| paavan pathith keeeae khin bheethar mehimaa kathhan n jaaee ||3|| |
| He has purified the sinners in an instant; I cannot express His Glorious Praises. ||3|| |
|
| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਸਗਲ ਭੈ ਖੋਏ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਚਰਣ ਓਟਾਈ ॥ |
| nirabho bheae sagal bhai khoeae gobidh charan outtaaee || |
| I have become fearless; all fear has departed. The feet of the Lord of the Universe are my only Shelter. |

| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੪॥੬॥ |

| Nanak sings the Praises of his Lord and Master; night and day, he is lovingly focused on Him. ||4||6|| |

| He is all-powerful, the Master of all virtues, but you never sing of Him! |

| ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਉਆ ਕਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਧਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
| shhodd jaae khin bheethar thaa ko ouaa ko fir fir dhhaavas rae ||1|| |
| You shall have to leave all this in an instant, but again and again, you chase after it. ||1|| |

| ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਸਮਾਰਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ |

| Why do you not contemplate your God? |

| ਬੈਰੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਸਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਜਾਰਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bairee sang rang ras rachiaa this sio jeearaa jaaras rae ||1|| rehaao || |
| You are entangled in association with your enemies, and the enjoyment of pleasures; your soul is burning up with them! ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਨਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਛੋਡੈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ |
| jaa kai naam suniai jam shhoddai thaa kee saran n paavas rae || |
| Hearing His Name, the Messenger of Death will release you, and yet, you do not enter His Sanctuary! |

| ਕਾਢਿ ਦੇਇ ਸਿਆਲ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਟਿਕਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥ |
| kaadt dhaee siaal bapurae ko thaa kee outt ttikaavas rae ||2|| |
| Turn out this wretched jackal, and seek the Shelter of that God. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜਾਸੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਭਵ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ |
| jis kaa jaas sunath bhav thareeai thaa sio rang n laavas rae || |
| Praising Him, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, and yet, you have not fallen in love with Him! |

| ਥੋਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਅਲਪ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਟਕਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੩॥ |
| thhoree baath alap supanae kee bahur bahur attakaavas rae ||3|| |
| This meager, short-lived dream, this thing - you are engrossed in it, over and over again. ||3|| |
