| ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਰੀ ਮਰੁ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ |
| houmai maeraa maree mar mar janmai vaaro vaar || |
| Dying in egotism and self-conceit, one dies, and dies again, only to be reincarnated over and over again. |

| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadhae jae marai fir marai n dhoojee vaar || |
| But when he dies in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, then he does not die, ever again. |

| ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥ |
| guramathee jagajeevan man vasai sabh kul oudhhaaranehaar ||4|| |
| When he follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines the Lord, the Life of the World, within his mind, he redeems all his generations. ||4|| |

| ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥ |
| sachaa vakhar naam hai sachaa vaapaaraa || |
| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the true object, the true commodity. |
|
| ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ |
| laahaa naam sansaar hai guramathee veechaaraa || |
| The Naam is the only true profit in this world. Follow the Guru's Teachings, and contemplate it. |

| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਨਿਤ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae kaar kamaavanee nith thottaa saisaaraa ||5|| |
| To work in the love of duality, brings constant loss in this world. ||5|| |
|
| ਸਾਚੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥ |
| saachee sangath thhaan sach sachae ghar baaraa || sachaa bhojan bhaao sach sach naam adhhaaraa || |
| True is one's association, true is one's place, and true is one's hearth and home, when one has the support of the Naam. |

| ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੬॥ |
| sachee baanee santhokhiaa sachaa sabadh veechaaraa ||6|| |
| Contemplating the True Word of the Guru's Bani, and the True Word of the Shabad, one becomes content. ||6|| |

| ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥ |
| ras bhogan paathisaaheeaa dhukh sukh sanghaaraa || |
| Enjoying princely pleasures, one shall be destroyed in pain and pleasure. |

| ਮੋਟਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਈਐ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਭਾਰਾ ॥ |
| mottaa naao dhharaaeeai gal aougan bhaaraa || |
| Adopting a name of greatness, one strings heavy sins around his neck. |
|
| ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥ |
| maanas dhaath n hovee thoo dhaathaa saaraa ||7|| |
| Mankind cannot give gifts; You alone are the Giver of everything. ||7|| |

| ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਅਵਿਗਤੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ |
| agam agochar thoo dhhanee avigath apaaraa || |
| You are inaccessible and unfathomable; O Lord, You are imperishable and infinite. |

| gur sabadhee dhar joeeai mukathae bhanddaaraa || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, seeking at the Lord's Door, one finds the treasure of liberation. |

| The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea. |

| ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥ |
| kandhhee dhis n aavee naa ouravaar n paar || |
| The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond. |
|
| ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ |
| vanjhee haathh n khaevattoo jal saagar asaraal ||1|| |
| There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1|| |

| ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ ॥ |
| baabaa jag faathhaa mehaa jaal || |
| O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| By Guru's Grace, they are saved, contemplating the True Name. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ |
| sathiguroo hai bohithhaa sabadh langhaavanehaar || |
| The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across. |

| ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ |
| thithhai pavan n paavako naa jal naa aakaar || |
| There is neither wind nor fire, neither water nor form there. |
|
| ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
| thithhai sachaa sach naae bhavajal thaaranehaar ||2|| |
| The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2|| |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| guramukh langhae sae paar peae sachae sio liv laae || |
| The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord. |
|
| ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ |
| aavaa goun nivaariaa jothee joth milaae || |
| Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| guramathee sehaj oopajai sachae rehai samaae ||3|| |
| Following the Guru's Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3|| |

| ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ॥ |
| sap pirraaee paaeeai bikh anthar man ros || |
| The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains. |
|
| ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ ॥ |
| poorab likhiaa paaeeai kis no dheejai dhos || |
| One obtains what is pre-ordained; why does he blame others? |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥ |
| guramukh gaararr jae sunae mannae naao santhos ||4|| |
| If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4|| |
|
| ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ ॥ |
| maagaramashh fehaaeeai kunddee jaal vathaae || |
| The crocodile is caught by the hook and line; |
|
| ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥ |
| dhuramath faathhaa faaheeai fir fir pashhothaae || |
| caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again. |

| ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥ |
| janman maran n sujhee kirath n maettiaa jaae ||5|| |
| He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one's past actions cannot be erased. ||5|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| houmai bikh paae jagath oupaaeiaa sabadh vasai bikh jaae || |
| Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated. |

| ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ |
| jaraa johi n sakee sach rehai liv laae || |
| Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord. |

| ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ |
| dhhandhhai dhhaavath jag baadhhiaa naa boojhai veechaar || |
| The world is chasing after worldly affairs; caught and bound, it does not understand contemplative meditation. |
|
| ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥ |
| janman maran visaariaa manamukh mugadhh gavaar || |
| The foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death. |
|
| ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥ |
| gur raakhae sae oubarae sachaa sabadh veechaar ||7|| |
| Those whom the Guru has protected are saved, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||7|| |

| ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ |
| soohatt pinjar praem kai bolai bolanehaar || |
| In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks. |
|
| ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਤ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥ |
| sach chugai anmrith peeai ouddai th eaekaa vaar || |
| It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once. |

| ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥ |
| gur miliai khasam pashhaaneeai kahu naanak mokh dhuaar ||8||2|| |
| Meeting with the Guru, one recognizes his Lord and Master; says Nanak, he finds the gate of liberation. ||8||2|| |

| One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers death; otherwise, where can you run? |

| ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਡਰਿ ਭੈ ਭਾਗੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥ |
| jis kai ddar bhai bhaageeai anmrith thaa ko naao || |
| Through the Fear of God, fear runs away; His Name is Ambrosial Nectar. |

| ਮਾਰਹਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਬੀਜਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ |
| maarehi raakhehi eaek thoo beejo naahee thhaao ||1|| |
| You alone kill and protect; except for You, there is no place at all. ||1|| |

| ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਕਾਚਉ ਮਤਿਹੀਨ ॥ |
| baabaa mai kucheel kaacho mathiheen || |
| O Baba, I am filthy, shallow and totally without understanding. |

| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੀਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| naam binaa ko kashh nehee gur poorai pooree math keen ||1|| rehaao || |
| Without the Naam, no one is anything; the Perfect Guru has made my intellect perfect. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਅਵਗਣਿ ਸੁਭਰ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ |
| avagan subhar gun nehee bin gun kio ghar jaao || |
| I am full of faults, and I have no virtue at all. Without virtues, how can I go home? |

| ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ |
| sehaj sabadh sukh oopajai bin bhaagaa dhhan naahi || |
| Through the Word of the Shabad, intuitive peace wells up; without good destiny, the wealth is not obtained. |

| ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ |
| jin kai naam n man vasai sae baadhhae dhookh sehaahi ||2|| |
| Those whose minds are not filled with the Naam are bound and gagged, and suffer in pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ |
| jinee naam visaariaa sae kith aaeae sansaar || |
| Those who have forgotten the Naam - why have they even come into the world? |
