| ਖਾਜੈ ਪੈਝੈ ਰਲੀ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ |
| khaajai paijhai ralee kareejai || |
| She eats, dresses and plays joyfully, |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਭਗਤੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥ |
| bin abh bhagathee baadh mareejai || |
| but without loving devotional worship of the Lord, she dies uselessly. |
 |
| ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ |
| sar apasar kee saar n jaanai jam maarae kiaa chaaraa hae ||13|| |
| One who does not distinguish between good and evil, is beaten by the Messenger of Death; how can anyone escape this? ||13|| |

| ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
| paravirathee naravirath pashhaanai || |
| One who realizes what he has to possess, and what he has to abandon, |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| gur kai sang sabadh ghar jaanai || |
| associating with the Guru, comes to know the Word of the Shabad, within the home of his own self. |
 |
| ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ |
| kis hee mandhaa aakh n chalai sach kharaa sachiaaraa hae ||14|| |
| Do not call anyone else bad; follow this way of life. Those who are true are judged to be genuine by the True Lord. ||14|| |

| ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਿਝੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ |
| saach binaa dhar sijhai n koee || |
| Without Truth, no one succeeds in the Court of the Lord. |

| ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| saach sabadh paijhai path hoee || |
| Through the True Shabad, one is robed in honor. |
 |
| ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ |
| aapae bakhas leae this bhaavai houmai garab nivaaraa hae ||15|| |
| He forgives those with whom He is pleased; they silence their egotism and pride. ||15|| |

| ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
| gur kirapaa thae hukam pashhaanai || |
| One who realizes the Hukam of God's Command, by the Grace of the Guru, |

| ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| jugeh juganthar kee bidhh jaanai || |
| comes to know the lifestyle of the ages. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੭॥ |
| naanak naam japahu thar thaaree sach thaarae thaaranehaaraa hae ||16||1||7|| |
| O Nanak, chant the Naam, and cross over to the other side. The True Lord will carry you across. ||16||1||7|| |

| har saa meeth naahee mai koee || |
| I have no other friend like the Lord. |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥ |
| jin than man dheeaa surath samoee || |
| He gave me body and mind, and infused consciousness into my being. |
 |
| ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ |
| sarab jeeaa prathipaal samaalae so anthar dhaanaa beenaa hae ||1|| |
| He cherishes and cares for all beings; He is deep within, the wise, all-knowing Lord. ||1|| |

| ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ |
| gur saravar ham hans piaarae || |
| The Guru is the sacred pool, and I am His beloved swan. |

| ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥ |
| saagar mehi rathan laal bahu saarae || |
| In the ocean, there are so many jewels and rubies. |
 |
| ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| mothee maanak heeraa har jas gaavath man than bheenaa hae ||2|| |
| The Lord's Praises are pearls, gems and diamonds. Singing His Praises, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ |
| har agam agaahu agaadhh niraalaa || |
| The Lord is inaccessible, inscrutable, unfathomable and unattached. |

| ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ |
| har anth n paaeeai gur gopaalaa || |
| The Lord's limits cannot be found; the Guru is the Lord of the World. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ |
| sathigur math thaarae thaaranehaaraa mael leae rang leenaa hae ||3|| |
| Through the Teachings of the True Guru, the Lord carries us across to the other side. He unites in His Union those who are colored by His Love. ||3|| |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥ |
| sathigur baajhahu mukath kinaehee || |
| Without the True Guru, how can anyone be liberated? |

| ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥ |
| ouhu aadh jugaadhee raam sanaehee || |
| He has been the Friend of the Lord, from the very beginning of time, and all throughout the ages. |

| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ |
| sathigur dhaathaa mukath karaaeae || |
| The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation; |
 |
| ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
| sabh rog gavaaeae anmrith ras paaeae || |
| all diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar. |

| ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ |
| jam jaagaath naahee kar laagai jis agan bujhee thar seenaa hae ||5|| |
| Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5|| |

| ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ |
| kaaeiaa hans preeth bahu dhhaaree || |
| The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan. |
 |
| ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ |
| ouhu jogee purakh ouh sundhar naaree || |
| He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman. |
 |
| ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ |
| ahinis bhogai choj binodhee outh chalathai mathaa n keenaa hae ||6|| |
| Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6|| |

| ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥ |
| srisatt oupaae rehae prabh shhaajai || |
| Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it. |
 |
| ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥ |
| poun paanee baisanthar gaajai || |
| In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds. |
 |
| ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ |
| manooaa ddolai dhooth sangath mil so paaeae jo kishh keenaa hae ||7|| |
| The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7|| |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥ |
| naam visaar dhokh dhukh seheeai || |
| Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways. |
 |
| ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥ |
| hukam bhaeiaa chalanaa kio reheeai || |
| When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here? |
 |
| ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
| narak koop mehi gothae khaavai jio jal thae baahar meenaa hae ||8|| |
| He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8|| |
 |
| ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥ |
| chouraaseeh narak saakath bhogaaeeai || |
| The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations. |
 |
| ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ |
| jaisaa keechai thaiso paaeeai || |
| As he acts, so does he suffer. |
 |
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ |
| sathigur baajhahu mukath n hoee kirath baadhhaa gras dheenaa hae ||9|| |
| Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9|| |
 |
| ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥ |
| khanddae dhhaar galee ath bheerree || |
| This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword. |
 |
| ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥ |
| laekhaa leejai thil jio peerree || |
| When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill. |
 |
| ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ |
| maath pithaa kalathr suth baelee naahee bin har ras mukath n keenaa hae ||10|| |
| Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone's friend in the end. Without the Lord's Love, no one is liberated. ||10|| |
 |
| ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ |
| meeth sakhae kaethae jag maahee || |
| You may have many friends and companions in the world, |
 |
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| bin gur paramaesar koee naahee || |
| but without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all. |
 |
| ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ |
| gur kee saevaa mukath paraaein anadhin keerathan keenaa hae ||11|| |
| Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||11|| |
 |
| ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| koorr shhodd saachae ko dhhaavahu || |
| Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth, |
 |
| ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ |
| jo eishhahu soee fal paavahu || |
| and you shall obtain the fruits of your desires. |
 |
| ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ |
| saach vakhar kae vaapaaree viralae lai laahaa soudhaa keenaa hae ||12|| |
| Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12|| |
 |
| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥ |
| har har naam vakhar lai chalahu || |
| Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, |
 |
| ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥ |
| dharasan paavahu sehaj mehalahu || |
| and you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence. |
