ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ |
guramukh hovai th aakhee soojhai || |
But one who becomes Gurmukh, sees the Lord with his eyes. |

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
anadhin naam ravai dhin raathee mil preetham sukh hoee hae ||8|| |
Night and day, he chants the Naam, day and night; meeting with his Beloved, he finds peace. ||8|| |
 |
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਧਾਤੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥ |
manamukh dhhaath dhoojai hai laagaa || |
The self-willed manmukh wanders distracted, attached to duality. |
 |
ਜਨਮਤ ਕੀ ਨ ਮੂਓ ਆਭਾਗਾ ॥ |
janamath kee n mooou aabhaagaa || |
That unfortunate wretch - why didn't he just die as soon as he was born? |
 |
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ |
aavath jaath birathhaa janam gavaaeiaa bin gur mukath n hoee hae ||9|| |
Coming and going, he wastes away his life in vain. Without the Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||9|| |
 |
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਈ ॥ |
kaaeiaa kusudhh houmai mal laaee || |
That body which is stained with the filth of egotism is false and impure. |
 |
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
jae so dhhovehi thaa mail n jaaee || |
It may be washed a hundred times, but its filth is still not removed. |
 |
ਸਬਦਿ ਧੋਪੈ ਤਾ ਹਛੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੈਲੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ |
sabadh dhhopai thaa hashhee hovai fir mailee mool n hoee hae ||10|| |
But if it is washed with the Word of the Shabad, then it is truly cleansed, and it shall never be soiled again. ||10|| |

ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੰਘਾਰਹਿ ॥ |
panch dhooth kaaeiaa sanghaarehi || |
The five demons destroy the body. |
 |
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ॥ |
mar mar janmehi sabadh n veechaarehi || |
He dies and dies again, only to be reincarnated; he does not contemplate the Shabad. |

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ |
anthar maaeiaa moh gubaaraa jio supanai sudhh n hoee hae ||11|| |
The darkness of emotional attachment to Maya is within his inner being; as if in a dream, he does not understand. ||11|| |
 |
ਇਕਿ ਪੰਚਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਹੈ ਲਾਗੇ ॥ |
eik panchaa maar sabadh hai laagae || |
Some conquer the five demons, by being attached to the Shabad. |
 |
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥ |
sathigur aae miliaa vaddabhaagae || |
They are blessed and very fortunate; the True Guru comes to meet them. |
 |
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ |
anthar saach ravehi rang raathae sehaj samaavai soee hae ||12|| |
Within the nucleus of their inner being, they dwell upon the Truth; attuned to the Lord's Love, they intuitively merge in Him. ||12|| |
 |
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ |
gur kee chaal guroo thae jaapai || |
The Guru's Way is known through the Guru. |
 |
ਪੂਰਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥ |
pooraa saevak sabadh sinjaapai || |
His perfect servant attains realization through the Shabad. |
 |
ਸਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ |
sadhaa sabadh ravai ghatt anthar rasanaa ras chaakhai sach soee hae ||13|| |
Deep within his heart, he dwells forever upon the Shabad; he tastes the sublime essence of the True Lord with his tongue. ||13|| |

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ |
houmai maarae sabadh nivaarae || |
Egotism is conquered and subdued by the Shabad. |
 |
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ |
har kaa naam rakhai our dhhaarae || |
I have enshrined the Name of the Lord within my heart. |
 |
ਏਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ |
eaekas bin ho hor n jaanaa sehajae hoe s hoee hae ||14|| |
Other than the One Lord, I know nothing at all. Whatever will be, will automatically be. ||14|| |

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਹਜੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
bin sathigur sehaj kinai nehee paaeiaa || |
Without the True Guru, no one obtains intuitive wisdom. |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
guramukh boojhai sach samaaeiaa || |
The Gurmukh understands, and is immersed in the True Lord. |
 |
ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ |
sachaa saev sabadh sach raathae houmai sabadhae khoee hae ||15|| |
He serves the True Lord, and is attuned to the True Shabad. The Shabad banishes egotism. ||15|| |

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ |
aapae gunadhaathaa beechaaree || |
He Himself is the Giver of virtue, the Contemplative Lord. |
 |
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਪਕੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥ |
guramukh dhaevehi pakee saaree || |
The Gurmukh is given the winning dice. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥ |
naanak naam samaavehi saachai saachae thae path hoee hae ||16||2|| |
O Nanak, immersed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one becomes true; from the True Lord, honor is obtained. ||16||2|| |

ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ |
jagajeevan saachaa eaeko dhaathaa || |
One One True Lord is the Life of the World, the Great Giver. |
 |
ਏਕੋ ਅਮਰੁ ਏਕਾ ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ |
eaeko amar eaekaa pathisaahee jug jug sir kaar banaaee hae ||1|| |
There is only One Command, and there is only One Supreme King. In each and every age, He links each to their tasks. ||1|| |

ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ |
so jan niramal jin aap pashhaathaa || |
That humble being is immaculate, who knows his own self. |
 |
ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ |
aapae aae miliaa sukhadhaathaa || |
The Lord, the Giver of peace, Himself comes and meets him. |
 |
ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
rasanaa sabadh rathee gun gaavai dhar saachai path paaee hae ||2|| |
His tongue is imbued with the Shabad, and he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he is honored in the Court of the True Lord. ||2|| |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ |
guramukh naam milai vaddiaaee || |
The Gurmukh is blessed with the glorious greatness of the Naam. |
 |
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਕਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ |
manamukh nindhak path gavaaee || |
The self-willed manmukh, the slanderer, loses his honor. |
 |
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ |
naam rathae param hans bairaagee nij ghar thaarree laaee hae ||3|| |
Attuned to the Naam, the supreme soul-swans remain detached; in the home of the self, they remain absorbed in deep meditative trance. ||3|| |

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ |
sabadh marai soee jan pooraa || |
That humble being who dies in the Shabad is perfect. |
 |
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ |
sathigur aakh sunaaeae sooraa || |
The brave, heroic True Guru chants and proclaims this. |
 |
ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ |
kaaeiaa andhar anmrith sar saachaa man peevai bhaae subhaaee hae ||4|| |
Deep within the body is the true pool of Ambrosial Nectar; the mind drinks it in with loving devotion. ||4|| |
 |
ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥ |
parr panddith avaraa samajhaaeae || |
The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads and instructs others, |
 |
ਘਰ ਜਲਤੇ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ |
ghar jalathae kee khabar n paaeae || |
but he does not realize that his own home is on fire. |
 |
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ |
bin sathigur saevae naam n paaeeai parr thhaakae saanth n aaee hae ||5|| |
Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. You can read until you are exhausted, but you shall not find peace and tranquility. ||5|| |
 |
ਇਕਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥ |
eik bhasam lagaae firehi bhaekhadhhaaree || |
Some smear their bodies with ashes, and wander around in religious disguises. |
 |
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਮਾਰੀ ॥ |
bin sabadhai houmai kin maaree || |
Without the Word of the Shabad, who has ever subdued egotism? |
 |
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੇਖਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ |
anadhin jalath rehehi dhin raathee bharam bhaekh bharamaaee hae ||6|| |
Night and day, they continue burning, day and night; they are deluded and confused by their doubt and religious costumes. ||6|| |
 |
ਇਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥ |
eik grih kuttanb mehi sadhaa oudhaasee || |
Some, in the midst of their household and family, remain always unattached. |
 |
ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥ |
sabadh mueae har naam nivaasee || |
They die in the Shabad, and dwell in the Lord's Name. |
 |
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ |
anadhin sadhaa rehehi rang raathae bhai bhaae bhagath chith laaee hae ||7|| |
Night and day, they remain forever attuned to His Love; they focus their consciousness on loving devotion and the Fear of God. ||7|| |

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ॥ |
manamukh nindhaa kar kar viguthaa || |
The self-willed manmukh indulges in slander, and is ruined. |
 |
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਭਉਕੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਕੁਤਾ ॥ |
anthar lobh bhoukai jis kuthaa || |
The dog of greed barks within him. |
 |
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
jamakaal this kadhae n shhoddai anth gaeiaa pashhuthaaee hae ||8|| |
The Messenger of Death never leaves him, and in the end, he leaves, regretting and repenting. ||8|| |
